Oh, and if you're going to use conventional oil, the oil filter you use is far more important than the oil, as long as you keep up with regularly scheduled changes.

Any and all oil is rendered useless if it has solid particles in it.

It would be more wise to skimp on your oil than on your oil filter, since all oil is going to meet the minimum requirements.

Further, most of you don't keep your cars for more than 100,000 miles, so you could practically use vegetable oil and not run into any problems oil-related during that time.

Wix and Castrol is where it's at in my place, unless of course you want synthetic, then it's Amsoil.

at least you don't screw around.

Sucking off the mechanic is a service, so it really isn't free. Just an exchange of services.

I pay 19.99 for my changes.

You can if you buy junk, which is exactly what they use.

I've heard opinions that differ from yours. The oil in my 2000 Prizm has mostly been changed at Wal-Mart for two and a half years now. No problems, and cheaper.
I do them myself on my Beetle, but that's different.
So because your 2.5 year old car hasn't exhibited problems, the cheap oil at walmart is perfectly fine? It's cheap stuff. How else do you think they can over a $12 oil change (not including the extra crap they may try and sell you)? They use the cheapest filters and oil they can find. It probably IS fine, but that doesn't change the fact that it's cheap oil. The important thing is that $1.50 oil and $5 is probably not as big a diff as people would like to believe.

Walmart doesnt try to upsell you at all, unlike Valvoline or Midas shops. (yes valvoline has their own oil change shops.)

You bring your own filter because you don't trust theirs, but couldn't care less about the actual oil in the engine?

Firestone, I am not even aware Walmart offer oil change for $11.99. Too bad the closest Walmart is 25 miles away.

Walmart is breaking ground at 1000 sites this year for new stores. you might have one closer by next year when they open.

turkey22- welcome to ATOT, where you can find LOTS of info you never knew existed, and some of them (like this thread) that are very informative. :)

be careful when you take your car to a wal-mart or jiffy lube type place.... Had my oil changed at a Wal-Mart one time, was in a hurry and didnt check ther workmanship, the dumb bastards had left the oil cap off the engine, drove 200 miles that way before i stopped for gas and noticed oil dripping off my front bumper. That was the last time i used Wal-Mart, I change my own oil now, use Wix Filters and Mobil 5-30 Dino Oil.

Morons. I've actually done the same  The engine bay, 20 miles later, was smothered in oil and the engine was lightly smoking the whole way as that oil burned itself away (I wasn't driving). I won't make the same mistake again.

I've always been to my local Firestone. I know the people there and they are really cool. 12.99 Is what I pay I think. I seldom rev over 3K RPM, so I guess the cheap stuff should be ok.
