Prove it.
Castrol GTX 10W-30:
Viscosity Index = 143
Pour Point = -22F
Flash Point = 415F
High Temp/High Shear = 3.10
NOACK % weight loss = 13%
Total Base Number = 5.0
The pour point sucks, flash point is satisfactory at best. It is quite shear stable, which is it's only saving grace.
😉 The TBN of 5.0 doesen't really matter as long as you're changing the oil every 3,000 miles.
Valvoline All-Climate 10W-30:
VI = 135
PP = -27F
FP = 421F
HT/HS = 2.90
NOACK = 13%
TBN = 7.0
A bit of a tradeoff; stable to a higher temp but less shear stable. However, it should hold up a little better if you make it a habbit to miss the 3,000 mile mark quite often due to its TBN of 7.0.
😉
Shell FormulaShell 10W-30:
VI = 137
PP = -36F
FP = 430F
HT/HS = 2.90
NOACK = 13%
TBN = 6.2
A little better.
Citgo Citgard 500 10W-30:
VI = 136
PP = -27F
FP = 417F
HT/HS = 3.30
NOACK = 13%
TBN = 8.0
Now we're talkin! Quite shear stable, with a very high TBN to fight those nasty combustion byproducts. Flash point could be better.
76 Lubricants Guardol QLT 10W-30:
VI = 135
PP = -33F
FP = 415F
HT/HS = 3.50
NOACK = 13%
TBN = 12
w00t! Even better! This oil should resist shearing quite well and should be able to fight combustion byproducts with the best of them.
Pennzoil Multigrade 10W-30
VI = 140
PP = -33F
FP = 430F
HT/HS = 3.20
NOACK = 13%
TBN = 5.0
Better than GTX 10W-30 in all ways.
Motorcraft Super Premium 10W-30:
VI = 139
PP = -31F
FP = 439F
HT/HS = 3.20
NOACK = 13%
TBN = 6.7
Wow! Now we're actually starting to get into the quality conventional oils!
😉
One of the best conventional oils money can buy?
Mobil1 Delvac 1300 Super 10W-30:
VI = 147
PP = -38F
FP = 439F
HT/HS = 3.60
NOACK = 13%
TBN = 11
Better(overall) than Mobil1 SuperSyn
synthetic 10W-30 -
VI = 145
PP = -49F <--- gotta love synthetic
FP = 455F
HT/HS = 2.90
NOACK = 13%
TBN = 5.0
