Didn't look that bad at all. How'd he die from that?

The dermis is your first line of protection from infection. And as most of us know by now, it is the little bugs that we can't see that usually end up killing us (decades of knowledge and medical practice have gone a long ways towards preventing deaths from infection, of course.)

You burn off that skin, and you burn off a lot of it, you have a rather short window of preventing some rather nasty bugs from getting in and wreaking havok. Chances are--this kid was dumb enough to do this, maybe his parents/whomever weren't cognizant enough to get him proper help in time?

Regardless, you probably need to dress those wounds pretty quickly and prior to rushing off to the ER immediately.

without going into detail, I'll let you look up the process of, and need for debridement when it comes to burn victims.

Also, I didn't watch the video in the article; I don't need to see that sort of stuff. But, the image clearly shows that he's in a shower. The kid who died wasn't anywhere near a shower. Further, one contributing source to death, and very possible from the location of the fire is due to this thing humans do: breathing. Inhaling very hot air can burn the lungs, reducing their ability to do what they're supposed to do, plus the burns in the lungs cause all sorts of other bad things (fluid to build in the lungs).

The genius in that video ran out of the shower when he was trying to put the fire out.

To be fair, I think much of your logic kind of shuts down when put into such extreme crises as having your entire body engulfed in flames.

This must be especially true when, a few moments earlier, that same logic led to the act of pouring accelerant all over your body and setting it aflame.

Had be been spontaneously set on fire, I would agree, but this guy should have been prepared to get under the water.

really? "prepared"? Prepared for what? He did prepare to light himself on fire. I'm not sure we should judge his mental capacity towards safety preparation, when one thinks "I should set myself on fire because it will make people laugh on youtube."

besides--did he cover himself with oil? I'm not sure that the shower would help all that much...

The kid in the video pictured actually runs away from the shower in a painful panic. His family yells at him to get back into the shower to get under the water but he doesn't do it immediately and when he does, he's flailing all over the place and his family member is tripping all over him taking a lot of the water on herself instead.

And that should surprise no one. A person on fire is probably not going to be thinking rationally. (And speaking of rational, neither is a person willingly dousing himself with accelerant and agreeing to be lit up like a match).

Its misleading to say "Fire challenge gone wrong" as if this is something that can possibly ever go right.

:awe:

it almost got another guy in SoCal...

SANTA ANA, Calif. (KABC) -- A Santa Ana teenager was recovering Saturday after lighting himself on fire as part of an internet trend, known as the "fire challenge."

Firefighters were called to the 900 block of South Standard Avenue at about 2:20 p.m. Friday when Fernando Valencia, 16, poured nail polish remover on his chest and set it on fire.

"Being burned alive was one of the worst things you can imagine," said Valencia, who thought he could last longer than the failed attempts he saw on YouTube. "It's my fault. I can't say nothing else besides it was a dumb idea."

He suffered second- and third-degree burns on his neck, face and hips, and was taken in stable condition to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana for treatment.

The fire challenge calls for participants to film themselves using flammable liquids to set themselves on fire before putting the flames out quickly. The video is then posted online.

"Anything that you think will give you 15, 20 minutes of fame is not worth the lifetime of scar tissue and pain that you will get as a result of doing any of these activities," Larry Kurtz with the Orange County Fire Department said.

Valencia posted a video on YouTube echoing that warning.

"I wouldn't wish it on nobody. It's extremely painful. It's just not a good idea. It's nothing you want to try," Valencia said.

I've been through a "debridelment" on a "3x4 piece on my leg, caused by of all things, a heating pad. It's insanely painful, I had pulled a leg muscle and when I got home put a heating pad on high setting, then fell asleep. This was an old-style type pad with no automatic shutoff, when I fell asleep I turned over and wrapped the pad tightly against my leg which resulted in a 3rd degree burn.

Do you still use heating pads? :p Legitimately curious.

Good god, how did you stay asleep while your leg was being *cooked*?? And I thought I slept like a corpse...

Is it bad that I've been set on fire?... Granted, it was a very controlled amount of stuff and my hair was covered. It was done by people that have done it a ton of times before too.

It looked like nail polish remover. If it was oil... they never would have gotten him out like that.

best part are the real idiots that pour so much on it drips down to their junk and that starting to burn really seems to bother them.

To be fair, if a person intentionally pours something flammable on their body and ignites it the logic completely shut down well before the body became engulfed in flames.

I like the ones that let it get into their clothing... Like taking it up a notch and turning yourself into a torch is such an awesome idea.
