Apparently there is still some reading comprehension to be had, so I'll try to clear some things up.
"You still haven't explained WHY you would want to play as hitler. Most people, if not nearly all, wouldn't play as hilter. As a game designer, why would you include a function that no one is going to use? Its ineffiecent direction of resources."
Why not? I wasn't as upset over the non-inclusion of him as much as I was over the possibility of playing a "reduced" version to please the more easily offended, who, by the way, would be offended at nearly everything anyway. As already stated in this thread, there are people willing to "play" a video game and not feel obligated to enact that character's life story. It's fortunate that these people know the difference between real life and a video game, unlike some others who choose to wonder why that function must be included at all.
"In other words, people will find something to be pissed about. Personally, I am much more pissed that the game is unplayable. "
I agree to a point. The modern day publisher credo is Ship-It-Like-It's-Hot. They don't care if the game isn't exactly polished (I'm looking at you, EA) or passed QA. However, I've had good experiences with Firaxis in the past, and this release seemed more unstable than their past releases. I dearly hope this isn't a trend, where the main difference between a computer game vs a console game isn't keyboard vs mouse, but "it works out of the box" vs "version 1.15 and counting".
"1. It's not about censorship; It's about the freedom for the makers of Civ4 to put whatever they want into the game.
2. It's their choice to put hitler in the game or not.
3. If you don't like their choice, don't buy the game.
4. You can always add Hitler in.
What is your problem with the game then?
"
1. You don't realize that these are one and the same. If the makers of Civ4 were to put something (let's be blatantly obvious here) like child pornography in video games, they WOULDN'T be able to do it because they would be censored. Now let's switch child pornography to something more palatable like, say, an outcry against drunk driving. Was that better? How about something in between, that is a historic fact, can't be disputed, can't be changed, and not IN ITSELF representing any hatred or bigotry. Whapped with the censorship stick.
2. And it's my choice to speak out against being intentionally jilted by an unknown 3rd party. Let's ban the knowledge of evolution then, because it will offend a whole lot of people. Oops! Already happened in some schools! Of course, it is always within the students' right to do their own evolution research at the public library away from class, right? Right...?
3. And like I said a few days ago, if I had a time machine, I would use it. If only real problems in life had as elegant solutions as the one you've proposed.
4. That is true, but it's not what I was angry at. Read #2.
"Hmm lets see, add Hitler as a leader choice, offend 0.1% of the population ( ten million people ), or not add Hitler and offend.... you - who bought it anyway.
Yeah, obviously they are nuts."
So, presumably according to you, there are 10 billion people on Earth. A fair enough enough estimate for someone who has never seen a census before. Then we'll also have to assume that every single one of them have access to a computer powerful enough to run Civilization 4. Then we'll have to assume they all bought the game. Though the folks at Firaxis would love these kinds of sales numbers, even the most optimistic of them would woefully admit that these numbers are a bit "off". Please never decide to be an investment banker. Or, at least, my investment banker.
Now that we've established that your numbers are entirely made up, I've got some made-up numbers of my own. There are (I hereby pull this number out of my asch) -- 76 eleventy bajillion people who would feel offended if they found out that they have been screwed with behind the scenes. 115% of these people believe that it is their unholy right to the facts without having them "altered" (in other words, lying) to fit the billing of "sensitive" people. 68% of sensitive people agree that this is a bad idea. What's amazing is, out of all 76 bajillion people, I must be the only one with any sort of critical thinking skills. Imagine that. They obviously must be "nuts".
