yeah. I made a thread over in the CPU forums, I'm hoping I can find a fix. This would make me put my winchester back in...

I played this game for awhile yesterday having got it, but haven't played for real yet.

I'm trying to create a large "Earth-like" map where continents are spread out separated by bodies of water. I found "Terra" to be best suited. However I want to start at the Ancient age, that is stone age (earliest era you can start from). When you start a Terra map at Ancient though the map is all glumped together. Is this because Terra map tries to match the planet accurately as it was that era (back then most continents were glumped together, pre-terraforming). Does this mean on a Terra map as the eras go by the map morphs? If you start a Terra in the modern age the land masses are separated like real Earth. Not to mention if you full-zoom out, you can see the planet Earth as a sphere and the space outside it.

Just wondering if my theories are right here.. I may be blabbing about nothing. ;-)

patch?

There are so many major issues with Civ4 that they will need to be releasing a patch very soon (I would guess the end of next week/beginning of the following if they have their act together). Just from what I have seen, there are the following *major* bugs:

1) Terrain is black
2) ALT-TAB crashes the game
3) Crash to desktop/reboot issue
4) About half the people with ATI cards can't play out of the box

These are all very big issues that make the game unplayable or near unplayable.

I picked up my copy yesterday and played for a few hours last night with absolutely no problems.
My system specs are: radeon 9800pro, 768ram, xp@2.2ghz
the game runs great at 1280X1024 (haven't tried 1600x12 yet) and my ati drivers aren't anything really new, catalyst 5.6 (should I even bother upgrading to 5.10? everything works great)

I think it is the newer drivers that are causing the ATI errors. I've experienced #'s 1-3 above on my rig.

#1-3 I haven't experienced. I can alt tab out fine. I recommend playing the game in windowed mode (edit your CivilizationIV.ini file to enable windowed mode) as then you don't have to alt+tab.

#4 I did experience initially with my ATI x800 XL. I couldn't play this game at all.

However posted on the net (I can't find the original link) is a fix for ATI uses that should solve all ATI problems from what I hear (for compatible graphic cards, that is).

Basically a file in the Civilization IV directory needs to be unpacked.

Firstly make sure you have the latest ATI drivers:
https://support.ati.com/ics/support/def...?deptID=894&task=knowledge&folderID=27

Get this unpacking program:

http://www.civilized.de/download/civ4/binaries/PakBuild.zip

Open the exe, in the menu click on PAK-> UnPack.

Then browse to your Program Files Civilization 4\Assets directory and select the file named Art0.FPK.

The PakBuild program will seemingly pause for awhile at 100% while unpackign. Don't worry, it'll finish.

When it does move Art0.FPK from the Assets directory, so Civ4 can't read it (or else it may still be buggy).

Now start the game and your ATI problems should be fixed..

This is explained on the following German site:
http://www.civilized.de/www/content/index.php

So is the game issue free for those with Nvidia cards? I went to Walmart to buy it, but the $50 price, and the fact that I hated Civ 3 made me keep walking. I'll pick it up in a month or so. It should be $35 by then.

I know I saw an issue with nvidia cards, but it wasn't as significant. Check the civfanatics forums. I would recomend you wait as hopefully by then they have a couple of patches out.

Although with the way game pricing has changed recently, i'd expect it to stay over $40 for at least three months.

If you live near a Fry's you can get it today for $36.99+tax. I think it's also on Fry's Outpost.com but then you have to add shipping.

I've had no issues with my 6800GT, I'm running at 1680x1050 with everything on high. Looks good! Oh, and it's better than Civ3.

having a problem with my brother's lap top, 1.6GHz Banias, 1GB RAM 6600 Go I get random texture corruption, and sometimes alot of the text in the game messes, making it unplayable. Damn 2K games, way to go releaseing a beta on us so we can test it for $50. :disgust:

The ancient map fits the world map to your known world. Once you get a calendars, you figure out the size of the world and your map changes.

5.10s for my PC 77.77s for my brother's lappy, since the 81.85s shouldn't matter, not a dual core.

I'm surprised that so many people are having problems.

I was commenting on how flawless the game seems to be.

Well for me,

1. That's due to a texture issue, you gotta mess around with the texture pack, I've seen that problem somewhere. I just never ran into it.

2. I alt tabbed about 15 times. No problems here.

3. No crashes to desktop, but hardlocked about 10 hours in. Yeah, I played it for around 16 hours today.

4. Can't comment on that, I'm on a 7800gtx xg81.85 x2-3800+

Overall the graphics blow, the gameplay is good, but I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. I still prefer Alpha Centauri to this and, to a lesser extent, Rome Total War, but this is still a decent game nonetheless. The sound/music is top notch.

Sorry to dump on your post and let the flaming begin, but I have a remark/question. I played a civ2 demo a long long time ago for just a little while and though the game was crap. I've been looking at the reviews and screenshots of civ4 lately and it sorta looks like fun. Are there any other games you can compare this to? I have the hardware to run it for sure, but just not sure if it's my type of game.

Here's a list of some of the better known turn-based strategy games out there: Civ2/3/4, Close Combat 3, Alpha Centauri, Jagged Alliance 2, Heroes of Might and Magic 4, Age of Wonders 1/2, Warlords 4, Silent Storm. If you've played any of those, then you sort of know what to expect ;) It's quite different from real time strategy, especially in the endgame and resource management areas.

Civ4 is similar in theory to Rome: Total War (other than tha ability to play out battles on the terrrain). I say in theory because R;TW does not have near the depth of Civ4.
