There shouldn't be any FFL fees.

I purchased mine direct.

That gun is exempt.

Only guns made before the end of 1899 are exempt, IIRC. There are some exempt Mosins floating around out there since some receivers were manufactured prior to that (I own one).

You can get the FFL 03 (C&R) and avoid the dealer fees but you still have to apply through the ATF.

Depends on the seller and recipient. Some try to charge regardless, some will only ship to an FFL so they still want their fee.

C&R is totally worth it. It's $30 for 3 years and not only can you have C&R weapons mailed directly to you, you can get discounts at places like Midway and Brownell's. with the discounts and direct shipping it really pays for itself.

The only thing is that you have to keep a bound book and are subject to ATF inspections.

Bound book really isn't that much of a pain. takes like 2 minutes to enter in the data.

i have a mosin too. fun and cheap. I got a rubber buttbad at walmart and it helped a lot. Can go through a few bricks with no trouble now.

just picked up a savage 110 in .270 for hunting also.

I would love to get a mosin, I just worry that I might get a really bad rifle. The local Big 5 has these on sale all the time, from $99 to $150.

At $99, it's worth a shot. Many of the sellers will pull them out and let you hand pick. Might want to try that.

have a gunsmith check it out. should only cost like $10 at most. if it's not safe, return it.

I've had a local gunsmith check several C&R rifles I bought. Headspace is the big issue with these old guns and requires special tools to check. The tools really aren't that expensive but if you have multiple calibers you need to check then it can get expensive. Plus, if you don't intend to buy another rifle of that caliber, then it's kind of gone to waste.

You can get a headspace gauge for around $30. That is pretty cheap insurance to prevent you from buying a junk gun. There is also a tendency when buying guns to end up buying more guns of the same caliber, it is like an addiction, so there is no reason not to have a gauge to guarantee you are buying and about to shoot a safe gun.

If the rifling looks in good condition the gun will probably shoot fine. Believe it or not sometime the cheapie guns are the best shooters. Non numbers matching guns were very often re-arsenalled which means the parts were checked before the gun was put back into service. You can sometimes find brand new old stock re-arsenalled guns that were rebuilt yet never made it back to service.

Picked up a shoulder pad and broken shell extractor. Need to get a place to shoot and some ammo now.

Fine, can't fin a place to shoot. :( Most ranges around here are pistol only.

I once took mine to indoor range that allows rifles.

I won't do it again.

I guess it's due to the FMJ ammo but after a dozen shots a bullet ricocheted off the back wall and blew out a bunch of lights. Fluorescent tubes were flying all over the place. I left.

Many places don't allow FMJ anyway, but finding a decent rifle range around here is proving more difficult than I thought. It seems that in BFE, everyone just shoots "at my buddies land" so rifle ranges are few and far between.

So the range doesn't have a backstop? Weird...

The range I go to only allows up to .223 and no steel core/jacketed ammo, but that's because their backstop isn't built for the more powerful stuff and they don't want holes being punched through it.

I put another 40 or so rounds through my Mosin today, just before some afternoon showers. The range I go to is only about 100 yards long, so I really haven't tried any really long shots with it.

I still need to pick up a rubber pad, though.

Any of you guys shoot with the bayonet attached?

supposedly you get better accuracy with the bayonet attached but I haven't tried it.
