For those that saw my 22LR thread, then later the .308 thread, you'll be relieved that I finally bought SOMETHING..... Yeah, I cheaped out a little but thanks to KeaBorg, I got a nice laminated stock Mosin.

This will satisfy my need to be cheap, powerful yet be able to shoot all at the same time!

Cool gun, time to fix bayonets!

What ammo does it use, and how much is the ammo?

7.62x54R, you can get 880 rounds of surplus for like $160 delivered usually. I'll probably pick up some small packs local before I go zombie hoarding ammo like everyone else seems to be doing.

Very nice, Gill. Enjoy the destruction of your right shoulder shooting! :p
They can be a real pain with that steel buttstock. (Not sure if yours has one from the pictures)

BTW, I would highly recommend loading your own rounds. It's economical and reliable.

Do you have a place to shoot?

I've got a "local" range with steel targets set up out to 600 yards. It's a lot of fun.

I just bought a Mosin for myself this past weekend (1930 Izhevsk). Got it home and immediately spent a few hours trying to clean all the cosmoline off of it.

Put about 20 rounds through it so far. If the weather cooperates this weekend, I'll be doing a bit more shooting this weekend. In fact, my 440 round spam can of ammo was just delivered about an hour ago!

Already got a shoulder pad on the way too. ;-)

Not yet, but my brother may. There are a few ranges around here but most are set up for pistols and skeet so I need to find out where the rifle guys go.

I have a 1944 carbine with the folding bayonet. I found out the guns were sighted in with the bayonet fixed and that is why mine seemed to pull it's shots because I was shooting it with the bayonet stowed.

Yeah, get ready for a black & blue shoulder :)

Fern

I used to shoot a .50 regularly so I don't think it'll be too bad but I wouldn't be surprised. I've heard they kick like a mule and most people say around ~50 shots is all they can take in a session before their shoulder gives up.

It is much easier if you fire the gun off hand. That way your body gives. If you go to the range and sit down on one of those benches your body is in a locked position and you will pummel your shoulder with any military bolt action. I took an Enfield and a Mauser to the range one day. Ten rounds through each sitting at a bench and my shoulder was bruised and in so much pain I had to stop. Shooting out in the woods I can shoot all day.

Not having shot a .50 BMG, I would guess that it's far, far worse than a Mosin.
If you don't have a problem shooting one of those bigass anti-materiel rifles, you shouldn't have a problem with a Mosin.
Are you in the armed forces?

I've got one.

I don't think I want to shoot it 50 times. It really needs a rubber pad for the butt.

Sweet.

Almost picked up a 1943 Nagant carbine a while ago, would've gone for it if I knew how much my tax return would kick back. My shoulder would hate me though.

Not military, but a lot of my family is. I used to do target shooting at distance in competition. The .50 isn't really that big of a deal if you have a good muzzle brake on it. Kicks like a healthy 12 gauge really.

Yeah, it's on the way. I've heard that from nearly everyone so I went ahead and got one.

on a side note...
I took my Savage BTV .22 LR to the range today to try out Wolf Match ammo. Wow! It really likes that stuff!

My groups were pretty good to begin with but this ammo brought them in even tighter. Will be buying more of it in the future!

I have an old WW2 Mauser. It's not hitting anything at 600 yards. 5 years of war didn't do it's accuracy any good. Half the shots end up tumbling.

Well, if a .50 is comparable to a 12 gauge, then the Mosin still produces less recoil from my experience.

Nice! I love the WWII era military rifles. They had a M1 Garand at the range I go to, for like $1300 iirc. This range is indoor though so no rifles there. Isn't any rifle ranges nearby other than a "club" down by the lake that you have to donate time to each year, which I just don't have atm and I don't think they have to long of a range anyway. I'd love to have a nearby rifle range with some space to go to though... the indoor range had a Savage 110BA .338 lapua sitting on the counter this past weekend. :awe:

Well, if you want to be technical, the Mosin-Nagant was pre-WWI. :colbert:
