First you break down, then you become broke.

For the record I have no jealousy/functionality issues with the iPhone, just that its monthly fees are ridiculous and far too high for me to EVER consider getting one at their current rates. Those of you who pay such an extravagant charge must have some serious disposable income, a weathly mommy/daddy, or a hole in your head you like to fill with expensive gadgets that make your e-penis go weee.

Or we have a family share plan. I pay the same for my iPhone 3gs as I did for my solo verizon account before (which had no data or text). About $45 or so. Still more than SERO was or similar, but not too bad otherwise.

No, it cannot, but I can ask people where a 7-11 is or what good restaurants are in the area.

Yep, that's just as good! Logic like that can't be beat.

Yet people got around just fine without a smart phone.
My point is not everyone needs an I-phone or a smart phone, period.
Some people just want a very small phone that they don't want to even know it's there unless they are using it. I was offered a blackberry for free at work and turned it down, because I really don't want to be "connected" 24-7.

I'm typically anti-Apple, but I would really like to have an iPhone. I don't agree with being forced into a $30 data plan for 2 years and not having the option to cancel it, but the phone is kinda pointless without the net, so whatever I guess. The iPhone is competitively priced and has plenty more pros than cons, so I can get behind it, unlike their other products.

Saga, you are proving your ignorance rather than their ignorance.

1) Wrong. iPhone playing music will chug along for 20 hours.
2) Apps are great, I actually agree.
3) Apps are useful -- Google Earth, Mint, Bank of America, Facebook, Maps, Weather, ... don't base your decision on the fact that you probably have five flashlight apps downloaded.
4) The original iPhone was plagued with volume issues. Remember that was their first phone, and Blackberry is roughly 20 generations ahead. The 3GS has addressed those issues. The Blackberry is already behind Apple, and has adapted their hardware and software to mimic Apple's.
5) Streaming Pandora is not a novelty, it is a legitimate feature. They sell iPhone arm straps that are unobtrusive.

$40 is not ridiculously expensive. Fuck, even $70/month for a stand alone plan is not ridiculously expensive when a Blackberry is $80/month.

Well when you pay just $20 a month for unlimited data, 200 Text messages on your Windows Mobile phone (not including minutes portion), it makes the iPhone and Blackberrys look wayyy overpriced. I'd say the worst part about the iPhone is Steve Jobs' need to control people and how his products function. When ever people make a complaint on this forum, you guys always direct them to some halfassed-hack in order to get it done and while that may seem fine and dandy, it's also a great way to brick the phone thanks to, well Steve Jobs once again (kill switch anyone?).

For those who are wondering what I'm talking about in terms of the kill switch:
http://www.engadgetmobile.com/...able-unlocked-iphones/

I pay $40/mo for blackberry with unlimited texts, data, and 700 minutes. I had the Motorola Q prior to the BB, and the BB>Q any day.

That's another reason I don't have an iPhone though, the monthly plans are way too expensive (i.e. double what I'm paying now for the same stuff).

Yeah but I prefer having a phone with GSM as I can pop in any sim card I want when I go out of the country. I'm assuming you have verizon, correct?

A fair point
Some people just want a very small phone that they don't want to even know it's there unless they are using it. I was offered a blackberry for free at work and turned it down, because I really don't want to be "connected" 24-7.
ok then 🙂

You are clearly not in the market for a smart phone. Thus this entire topic doesn't apply to you.

For people looking at a smartphone, the iphone is pretty goddamn hard to beat.

EVERY PHONE has a shitload of cons, however for many of us, the iphone > the rest

I hope the iPhone keeps getting better and better. Of course I will never, ever buy one (too restrictive and doesn't integrate well with Microsoft Outlook, which I rely on heavily). However, it'll light a fire under Microsoft's ass and they, as always, will respond with better, cheaper products. That's what I love about Microsoft, they're hyper-competitive.

I don't go out of the country currently, so that "feature" has no use for me. Maybe in 2 renewal periods (not the next one in about a year, but the one after that in about 3 years) I might look into that more. Although 3 years in phone world is a significant amount of time.

For me, the phone that can do the most in the least complicated fashion wins. That is the iPhone. Does everything, easily.

Don't link some Korean 2000 in 1 phone with a TV tuner, FM transmitter, and kitchen sink. Those phones are plagued with 20 deep menus and shoddy build quality.

I have an iPhone because I want a smart phone, so I only have to carry one thing in my pocket, because frankly I'm lazy and I'd never carry an mp3 player around, but it's nice to have handy. I'd love to migrate away from apple, but their app library (especially games which entertain me -- I don't have a DS) is just far too broad at this point, and nobody else is close.

Also, for the OP, I recommend Peggle, LuxTouch (Risk), Galcon (RTS), and Wolf3D.

Edit: and I still have the original iPhone, because it runs the apps and still plays games for $10 less per month than the new ones.

Shoddy. Shotty isn't a word.

It's actually a drug reference.

The dazzle wears off relatively quickly if you aren't a trendy college kid trying to use it as a fashion accessory.

you uh, never use it as an ipod?

I have a Sansa for when I jog, why would I use an inferior MP3 player that requires me to run the risk of getting sued 8 ways to China for putting music in any other format than the one I buy it from (iTunes) when I can simply use Amazon or similar services, buy the MP3 outright and not worry about all the obnoxious hassle of switching formats and ripping it to MP3 when I want to put it on a CD for a car, etc.

Both of my cars have MP3 capable OEM decks with CD changers so I don't need to make it look trashy with an Aux cable plugged into an iPod.

You're an idiot.

See, we can do nothing more than fling insults too. Saga, on the other hand, actually contributed to this thread, unlike your trolling ass.

That and AT&T's coverage, specifically 3G coverage is horrible compared to Verizon/Sprint and yes, their proces are rediculous but people want the iphone so bad they are willing to pay crazy plan prices and have bad reception.

You know the plans are pretty similar between VZW and ATT right?

45 for data + 45 for voice + text messaging plan

Except ATT gives you rollover...

See bolded.

And for reference, here is the amount I was paying for my piece of shit xv6700 with VZW

Your current Verizon Wireless bill statement is now available for online viewing at www.verizonwireless.com. The current balance due is $101.64

450 minutes + data + 1k txt messages

I'd love to have an iPhone, personally. I was really smart and signed a two-year contract with Verizon, though. UGH.

Maybe in August 2010, the iPhone will be on another carrier, will be more affordable, and AT&T won't suck in our area (Omaha, NE).

My company gives 22% discount on service, so my bill is ~$69 each month for 450 min. / 100 TXT / Dataplan.

I love my iPhone, except lately my calls have not been going through on the first attempt.

My love is waning. 🙁
