I think what they should have done with this new series is that instead of showing these dysfunctional families they should have focused in on the emergency responders (Fire, Police, AMT, and military) as that would have been a far more interesting story line.
The dysfunctional family angle could be done a heck of a lot better, BUT, I'd rather see it than purely from the perspective of first responders.
It is looking like there's a bit of a higher-level play here, and you couldn't really work with that story line very well if you are using those who are implementing the work of those higher players. Is it a coverup or other conspiracy? You risk making a bad show a heck of a lot worse by trying to dangle that carrot when using the very people who have to answer to those orders. Yes, they may not know everything, but they're a lot closer to the answers than random families.
Which brings me back to the end of Ep 3. It hints at hopefully some better plot development going forward. Regardless of the proper character responses or not, I have a feeling most of that was simply quick plot pushing to get to the meat of the show, with some obvious contrived plot events serving to simply advance the story quickly or to setup a quick resolution and plot advance later on.
The end, bringing in more direct contact with the military, that hints that we'll get to see more of the possible conspiracies.
Hopefully the barbershop family sticks around, because I want to see more of that barber, and definitely his "cousin." I think, though I may be wrong, that the daughter noted that dad had no surviving family or something to that effect, so she tried to call him out on that.. and he basically told her with one quick glare, "don't you ask me about that ever again."
Or I may be remembering that completely wrong, but... whatever, I've already deleted the recording, plus I'm at work.
