Quest for Glory 1: So You Want to Be a Hero? was first released under the series title of Hero's Quest by Sierra Online in 1989. Implemented using Sierra's SCI game interpreter engine, it featured a 16 color EGA graphics and a text-based parser interface. Later, due to legal reasons, the series title was changed to Quest for Glory (the name was too similar to a board game 'Hero Quest' being developed by Milton Bradley).

Great game as well.

i don't remember the requirements for them, but the best games of old that i played were the original civilization and the original red baron (the latter likely needs > 386, but i'm not sure)...

I absolutely loved any Sierra, Lucasarts, or SSI (gold box) games. But I'd have to give my vote to the original X-Wing. It's the reason I saved FOREVER to upgrade from an 8088/8MHz to a 386DX/33MHz.

Pirates!
Gold Box Games
Scorched Earth

Sooo many hours invested in each of those. I still ran all 3 on my POS P60 & Cyrix 166MX "hotplate", though they didnt run correctly (even with mo'slo). Combat in the gold box games was so fast that you couldn't see what happened.

Honorable Mention: Warcraft & Lost Vikings

I would also say Lemmings, but I played the Mac version back then (which had far superior graphics and music). Leaving that aside, I would go for Descent if it ran on a 386 (not sure, it may have needed a 486) and Fate of Atlantis otherwise.

Alley Cat was CGA goodness!

Sopwith was fun, maybe because I was 12 when it came out, but the damn game kept me playing endless hours.

did Death Track run on a 386? that game sucked up so much of my young life. I'm almost sure I had my 386 for that game, but it could have been when I had a 486 :( I'm not talking about the game released in 2000. this one was by I believe Activision where you raced in the future and could buy rockets and guns and you tried to blow up every other car and win the race - freaking awesome game.
