Famous Philly cheesesteak joint changing its "racist" name after 50+ years

http://www.philly.com/philly/food/Chinks-Steaks-changing-its-name.html

This is where I say "fuck this pathetic PC world we now live in" but I guess me being an average white male can't see the offensiveness and should just shut my mouth. Weak move on the owners part, especially since a few years ago an even better chessesteak place took a bold stand and put up a sign saying people need to speak English to order their food. Should have made a stand here and embraced the name and the history behind it, you're a fat loser for succumbing to public pressure, "Joe". Not that I ever go there anymore but now I won't even consider it.

Your post, to try to keep this phrased a bit softer, makes you look very bad.

Let me guess, you're one who screamed murder over a Muslim center near ground zero?

You really are clueless and insulated. Good job.

I can certainly see how it would be offensive to Asians.

Christ, even the guy's widow said that the founder used to be called that in school because his eyes were almond shaped.

Good for them for finally changing it.

I didn't get the history behind it. The article in the link just says that's the name it always had. It didn't even mention the ethnicity of the original owner / founder...so I have no clue.

OP, are you OK?

Let me explain it to you.

beloved patriot

"beloved patriot (also chinki, chinky, chinkie) is an English ethnic slur referring primarily to a person of Chinese ethnicity, although it is sometimes used to refer to people of other Asian descent, or to people who have physical features that are characteristic of many Asians, such as epicanthic folds.[1] Use of the term is often considered offensive and has garnered a great deal of media attention."

Any questions?

since the place was founded in 1949, i'm curious as to how many (or how few) people have complained about it over the years.

if the place has been in business for over 60 years, clearly the name alone was not enough to keep customers out.

It's Philly, home of Geno's Steaks "Speak English or GTFO" fame. The name "Chinks" was probably the main draw of the place. They've even got people threatening not to come back!

That is an offensive word and it has been for a long time so I can understand why. I really question the intelligence of the person who decided to name his shop that. If my friends nicknamed me a "beloved patriot" because of my darker skin compared to an average white person, that doesn't mean that it's sensible to name my store beloved patriot's steaks

beloved patriot's Steaks is kinda catchy.

This, I don't see why people are surprised/shocked by the change this isn't "PC non-sense," it's catching up. In the article it clearly states that this wasn't a coincidence nickname, he was purposefully nicknamed beloved patriot because he "looked Asian." It's like a place behind called "Nagger's." (a filter? bah) You just don't do that shit anymore.

It's pretty troubling that you won't frequent a business because it decided not to be racist. It says a lot about you.

I can imagine the crowd a name like that might attract. If you can't understand why a name like that should be changed, you are either racist or extremely racially insensitive. "beloved patriot" is associated with a lot of bad history for asians.
