The assault rifle is weird looking, pretty much like an adaptation of the early Maxim machine gun to a rifle. The combat rifle model is a lot closer to what we think of as an assault rifle, particularly since you can mod it for automatic fire.

I think the assault rifle was once called the machine gun -- not from any source, just from how it looks and is designed. The high ammo capacity, scope, mod-able to fully automatic, and size just make it that way. They probably kept assault rifle since it could be modded to semi-auto.

Regardless, pretty good gun. I googled combat rifle vs assault rifle, read the former was better and didn't touch the latter until yesterday. On the bright side, there are 3000+ 5.56mm rounds in my inventory now.

Probably going to mod my .308 combat rifle to use .45 and a full-auto receiver in a few levels. That makes no sense given what I said above but I have like 5000 .45 rounds now.

Automatics in FO4 mostly suck unless you do a mod to allow you to craft ammo. There are some really kick ass automatic guns out there that will shred stuff, but after a fight or two they are useless due to lack of ammo anymore.

Fo3, FNV, and Fo4 are all still pretty skewed in favor the sneaking sniper than anything else in terms of balance. It does make fights and the game take longer, but the chances of even taking damage at all during the game are dramatically decreased except in scripted scenarios where the player can't leverage being a sneaky sniper.

I agree, and overall that dynamic works for me because I don't like to turn my character into a power ranger. I like to see him as an ordinary guy dumped into the wasteland, so right now for example he just has a drifter's outfit and a militia hat, no armor.

Explosives are just good now, which they weren't before. Mostly I find it's because I can really control where the grenade falls, whereas in FO3/NV I couldn't.

I don't use mines so much at level 60, but if you can prepare the ground with a few before hand, they can be a big help against groups of tougher enemies at lower levels. There was one building full of mirelurks that killed me every time until I went with the "lots of mines" approach. I think I was 11 or 12.

This is on Hard. I'm sure it's more true on higher difficulties.

Get ballistic weave ASAP!

Not sure everyone knows this is in game, but it's incredibly powerful. It gives you something like +115 armor/energy on most clothing and a few hats. Some of the clothing can be worn in addition to armor.

Here's my current setup, 302/302 armor/energy with the 634 2-shot gauss.

It's a bit OP. :D

Grenades and mines are great in this game. I disagree about them being worse in the others, though. They did about the same damage, but they just required a little more skill.

I really wish they wouldn't have included ballistic weave, or made it impossible to combine with armor. It's incredibly overpowered and makes one faction's quests pretty much mandatory at least for a while.

The problem, like you said, is you can combine it with armor. They should have made it applicable to all clothing and make all clothing not wearable with armor. Then, not make certain clothing not so high powered compared to others (there's some clothing with like 40/40 base stats).

That would let you get around 250 in clothing + ballistic weave and around 200 without. Gives you a bonus for the faction, but not OP.

Heh, I see you've gotten into the used power armor market in Sanctuary.

I use them quite a bit. Lay a few down in the avenue of approach then aggro the baddies for a good time. Pulse mines do a number on Assaultrons and Mr. Gustys.

I... I don't know what you mean... There might or might not be another 3-4 suits in the building next to it.

:sneaky:

Honestly, I rarely used power armor, thus all the sets. By the time I hit big battles, I realize I should have brought it, but didn't (taking the castle, asylum). Then, when I think one is coming, I don't need it (first time into the institute, bunker hill).

I don't use it. Doesn't fit how I see the character. But I also admit I am getting my ass kicked at level 19. Too much time spent coddling crybaby settlers. Need to do some more character dev and get some better protection.

Sounds like I should go for those Local Leader perks after all!

If you are doing multiple settlements at all, local leader lvl 1 is basically required. Sure, you can fast travel around and move resources, but fuuuuuuuuck that.

Increased carry weight perk is awesome. At level 3, it starts to auto-sprint when you're overweight and still in run mode. That's bad for my power armor though -- I have like 50 fusion cells that last twice as long but I want to make sure it stays that way? The good thing is that it looks like I can turn it off by toggling walk mode on. Level 4 of the perk is awesome... I can fast travel despite being 2000 pounds over my weight limit. Finally, no more repeat trips to carry all my useless crap home to sell for bottle caps I don't use.

And I think it's time to get rid of my .50 sniper rifle. It does nothing to anyone but low level raiders and super mutants in survival mode. Had to swap over to my gauss more than a few times.

I just found a legendary assault rifle last night in the buttercup factory. Looks really cool but I haven't had a chance to try it yet. And boy that place has some terrible performance, plus its kind of a confusing building. We shall see if this becomes my default rifle, as the combat rifle in .45 has done me well so far.

Only problem I have with some weapon design is just how much of the screen they can take up, especially with certain scopes. Also why is .44 so rare?

I really hope they do some vats tweaks cause if your sniping it really doesn't feel right. I mostly use vats for torso hits.

I've been using my power armor more. I tend to prefer running around without it, since I'm supposed to be sneaky, but the increased carry weight is seductive. Particularly once I added the Calibrated Shocks to both legs, which added another 100 pounds to my weight limit.

I am, level 52 now. Still have only 1-2 main missions completed. So, its time to start getting thru main missions - still cant get any of my settlements over 85 happiness. I have enjoyed the building aspects- but the happiness going down or not up ever (maybe a synth= ?) and always needing something, assigning beds/jobs that don't seems to hold more than 5 minutes, etc... is stupid. I have charisma and local leader maxed out. Example= I have 23 beds at a settlement all indoors some in a large building and others in smaller buildings, 115 defense, 40 food, 28 water, have 3 stores all tier 3 (surgery, trader, and food/drink) - the 21 settlers complain about beds, so I assigned each one of them a bed and a job ( takes about an hour). 10 minutes real time later I look at the beds and they are all unassigned again, food is at zero ( nobodies assigned to food all of a sudden), and happiness is back down to 67. Then, when I start reassigning for the second time, one of the settlers ( the same one that would not move to her assigned job or bed) starts with a kidnapping mission. So, obviously this is either a glitch or a synth. Either way a complete waste of time. I also hate it when you clear an area to build and there is brush/bushes, trees, cars, etc. all over that are not "scrap-able" and that stuff wont let you build properly and you have to walk thru a bush inside of a building you just made.

For anybody having difficulty building - use the "foundation" found in the Wood/Floor area to level the ground, it helps tremendously.

Have full perks with Piper, Strong, Preston, Cogsworth, and MacCready. All are pretty useless as far as fights go, but Strong's dialog is funny.

The only "cheat" I am using is increasing my carrying to 500 using the console in PC- and that is only because of the load screens take too long.

Complain about beds:
Discovered its a vanilla bug which has something to do with TV's..
Scrap all the TV's you have at local settlement.

Not able to get over 85:
This is because your character needs to physically sit at the settlement.
They get happier when they see your there and noticed its the only way to break the 85 happiness barrier.

Also make sure u have every crafting station, and also have a bar / food shop.
A clinic shop also helps, but noticed not as much as bar / food, IMO bar / food is very important.

Charged Rail gun for sniping
I got one that does radiation dmg also -- it one shots basically everything

and the 5.56 machine gun for basically everything else

then keep rocket launcher (also does radiation dmg ) and mini nuke launching device for fun times.

at that point you can pretty much give away all your other guns and ammunition to your helpers so they do actual dmg when they shoot things.

I have 4 sets of power armor unfortunately they don't stay in it when you send them away. so you will find it sitting at where ever you sent them.

I sent all my power armor to castle so i know where they are and i have one extra suit geared up to F lvl as-well as my own with all the mods i wanted on them.

the other 2 are D lvl i think atm.

I always roll in power armor and have companion in the other F suit also .. it is a pain however constantly repairing the 2nd suit since your companions don't understand taking cover.

Companion + Power armor + super Sledge = Winner tbh since most of them cant hit the broad side of a barn with their weapons.
