Just outside of the vault, I'm dropping to 40fps sometimes. Might need to dial back from the suggested Ultra on everything.

2560x1440, i5 2500k, 8GB, 290X

That won't help. You'll need to drop to 1080p but then you'll get a solid 60fps. Also, set godrays to low that also helps with performance.

After playing for maybe 6 hours here's my quick list of positives and negatives

+ Nice setting, world feels lived in
+ Enjoyed the intro, thought it was quick but interesting and a lot better than New Vegas
+ Crafting seems excellent, very detailed and a step up from Skyrim
+ Guns have a nice feel to them and VATS is still useful
+ Audio is excellent.
+ Not many bugs or glitches so far
+ Seems to be a strong selection of weapons (not sure about armor yet)
+ Good performance, as to be expected.

- UI is terrible, just as bad as Skyrims.
- Don't like the new perk/skill system mash up. Not sure why they felt the need to fix something that wasn't even broken. This is a big deal.
- Graphics are mediocre and it feels like a reskinned Skyrim
- Some of the voice acting is surprisingly bad
- Map feels a bit compressed, there's hardly any open areas.
- You cannot see holstered weapons on your character. Wtf

well, good news is that, with the exception of voices and certain parts of a cluttered map, the community can fix all of those other problems in short order....and of course it will have to happen. ...now to reinstall NMM. 🙂

Thanks guys for the controller feedback.

Think I'll try mouse and keyboard since I've played all fallout games that way so far.

Steam servers getting a bit hammered here in UK ,peak time at almost 8pm here, my download speed went from 3.3 hours to no download data , then back to 11 hours before F4 is fully downloaded and right now back to 3.5 hours.

Lucky I'm a patient guy.

Update: Now back to 1 day lol ,oh well what to do in the meantime 🙂 .

I'll be using my Xbox One Elite controller for this game so I'll reply back after I have some time with it. I have about 15minutes left for my download (20minutes total).

Funny how much this game is differently received by different people.

I think the ui is a massive improvement over previous fallout games. Had and shoulders over skyrim Imo.
The new perk system cleans up a previously cluttered and very limiting leveling system while still keeping things interesting. There isn't as muh depth as fo3 but I don't see that as bad.
Does not feel at all like a reskinned skyrim to me. Skyrim is inferior. Textures are weak though.
Who cares about holstered weapons? there is no way a character can hold a mini gun in his pocket either. Besides this game is meant for first person view.

Looking good 5 minutes in. Quit to adjust the settings -- something is really pixelated, looks like some kind of lighting or shadows.

P.S. Made a male character too much like me, got worried. So, I'm playing a white woman.

Well found my first major bug...... lockpicking does not show up.

Seems to affect anyone with 4:3 or 5:4 monitors...... well that sucks

Im running 5:4 and none of the fixes seem to work, its like they completely forgot these style monitors

Well mine is now saying "no connection" on Steam for F4 download, websites work fine and even posting here, other games are ok so got to be F4 servers overloaded.

I may get it downloaded by friday at this rate.

Think I just go to bed soon(gone past midnight here) and leave Steam to do its thing or not.

Can you choose a different download region under your Steam settings?

I noticed that too. The god rays or whatever don't look very good on my hardware. Definitely pixelated or not diffused or something. I'm on AMD gpu though. It's pretty bad lol.

This game is stupidly addictive.

Steam lists me as having played 4.1 hours already..
and I just started around 12:15 PM this afternoon.

So glad I have tomorrow off from work, because I'm going to be hooked playing Fallout 4.

So far average at best.

There is a lot of positive feedback about the game on this forum, but outside of it, a lot of gamers are pretty disappointed. User reviews are mostly commenting on how the game is just a generic shooter, not a real RPG, that choices hardly matter, side-quests/fetch quests are pointless and there is no deep story or character development, abysmal writing, dialogue wheel, and outdated graphics and animations for a 2015 AAA game:

And some people thought this might get GOTY over TW3.

I'm running AMD, did some googling, someone said to turn off god-rays completely and it worked for me. However, the source I looked at said godrays may turn itself back on unless you use the "Low" settings button -- I was on medium or high and it turned itself back on after I turned the menu off and restarted.

Anyway, game looks like an augmented Fallout NV. It runs on my 6 year old machine -- been upgraded -- okay at med/high when not raining or near a lot of water, AA/AF off. My machine: i5 750 stock, 8 GB ram, AMD 6850, WD Black install drive with SSD Win 7.

Ouch those metacritic user reviews hurt. I started to see a little of what they are talking about in the first hour last night. Getting ready to dive back in this evening. Hoping they are over-playing the negative aspects.

Meta critic user reviews are the epitome of useless. I just read three or four that say they liked anything in the game - some went as far as to say they loved aspects of it - and still gave the game a zero. Meta critic is a waste of bandwidth.

Has anyone gotten to the mission to clear raiders out of the corvega assembly facility? It basically murdered my framerate. First time I've ever had to turn a game off because it was making me physically ill.

Yeah I did that one this afternoon. No issues here but that sucks a lot!

Yup it's usually a bunch of overly critical and super picky neck beards. I've got 6 friends on Steam playing it right now and every single one of them loves the game, I haven't heard any real negatives yet. I'd trust their opinions over what these guys on metacritic are saying.

10hrs in, Level 12, fiddled with the graphics and have achieved a solid 60FPS that never dips with Ultra textures + Ultra lighting, sliders at 80% and rest on High except for god rays low at 1200p with a 780 Ti @ 1215MHz. Some more screenshots:

The killings of skills is actually great compared to FO3, now SPECIAL more or less only effects your choice of perks. You can set a skill to 1 and it won't make you crippled, you just won't be able to pick those perks (in the beginning anyway). Yes this is way more of a shooter and yes its been consolised/streamlined/casualised (just like Skyrim) and yes the plotting/writing is so-so/occasionally above average but its exactly what you'd expect from Bethesda. If you want characters and writing you want CD Projekt.

I'd prefer Mass Effect/Dragon Age over this but its OK. Have experienced no dips in combat, not in Corvega. 5930K probably picks up the slack.

This game is awesome, great intro (perfect lenght), graphics are nice, gameplay is good and i'm eally enjoying the Perk System, really different then what we're used to.

I'm now pissed that I have to go to bed and work...

I KNEW IT!!!!

GTX 970 with FO4 bundle! And a great price too! Hell, that means getting a 970 for ~$300CDN once you subtract the $80 for the game itself.

DEAL! I'm buying one the moment I find it! 😀 One mostly-new GTX 960 for sale! 😉

Heh... I forgot them's US dollars. Pardon my earlier giddiness. 😉
