GOD DAMMIT!

Spent all of saturday downloading it and now the freakin game needs Day 1 Updates and other crap!

Why didnt they do that shit earlier!?!???

Lol you think you have problems 😉, my broadband was up and down for quite a few weeks and Sky ISP could not fix it(thanks for nothing Sky) and yesterday I changed over to my new broadband ISP Plusnet UK, so at least now I've a stable connection.

Hopefully I get my retail F4 copy via post today, then I can start the fun of updates etc...

🙂

Update: Hehe soon as I finished typing this my F4 arrived 🙂.

Retail copy only has DVD Steam install(did not need since I use Steam anyway)and F4 key(activate via Steam), vault tech map, condensed survival guide(for controls), so you still have to download the whole game and updates via Steam.

Not sure what I was expecting here but I guess rage is in vogue this season. So jacked up to play immediately, play six hours at midnight launch, rage incessantly on the internet over how bad the game is. Still plays all night.

If the game is really bad then why play it all night? (edit: not here, in this thread. but elsewhere on the internets, including elsewhere on AT)

Game is lovely. Despite what the previous screenshots would lead you to believe, its not overly colorful or shiny. Everything looks great, much better than Skyrim thanks to newer lighting effects.

Manage to get playable frame rates with most everything turned on. Story is good. Voice acting is OK, nice for the hero to have a voice. I love customizing my weapons. Armor is useful too. I got a mining helmet with built in lamp that can be many colors and intensities.

My only real gripe is they should have come up with a better system for the inner armor and outer armor.

Played a bit last night. Scenery and environments look great, but characters look surprisingly bad, like just as bad as Skyrim and that was bad in 2011. Everything else awesome so far.

Default FOV in first person is 80 degrees. It actually isn't bad compared to say Skyrim out of the box.

A far cry from what it ought to be for something like a 16:9 monitor which if you expand the typical 90 degrees at 4:3 to 16:9 is about 106 degrees. It looks absolutely awful, sadly I didn't spot any FOV slider in the options.

Agreed. I only played a little bit after updating, but the character models leave a lot to be desired, and the lead-in was really, really long. Once I got out and moving around, though... Fallout!

Is the lead-in as long or longer than the start of Fallout 3? I know in FO3, it was designed as a basic tutorial level which is nice for people not use to Fallout

I played about two hours of it last night after it unlocked on Steam. I did have a technical issue where I accidentally clicked a button apparently assigned as "Close Window" on my mouse while in-game and assigning controls, and had to restart my computer before I could play again. Minor issue; definitely need to get the Logitech software for it and shut that shit off.

I only made it to my house and started exploring that immediate area, and took a peek at that Workshop functionality. Good Lord, that certainly has a ton of options.

There's small things that really make playing the game more satisfying. Stuff like the much improved loot pick-up and how you can mark materials required by the Workshop objects so when you see the loot in the world, you'll know instantly you're looking at something you need. The Pip-Boy is improved. You could spend an hour EASILY just creating you damn character's face (if you're so inclined). I can't wait to start leveling up and seeing how that system works.

The game looks and runs great, even on my older i5-750 with a Radeon 7870. I won't even get into the numbnuts bitching about the graphics in this game. SMH. I have mine on medium/high settings at 1920x1080 and am satisfied, but so far it's ran so well that I think I'll experiment with upping them a bit.

So far the only bug I've encountered was my hands (and pistol) disappearing while in the Vault. It made fighting a little more difficult, but I just did a Quicksave and then Quickload and that fixed it.

I've only just scratched the surface of the game so far, but man if I ain't chompin at the bit to play more. I'd give it a score but I don't think only two hours into the game can allow me to do that with any degree of authority. NOW I CAN'T WAIT TO GET OFF WORK. lol

Thats happened to me a couple of times. I fixed it by using the scroll wheel to zoom out into 3rd person view and then back into 1st person view.

I felt like it was a lot longer than FO3, which I actually just started playing again last week. I didn't care for it, honestly. I much prefer the FONV approach of a quick interview focused on the stats and then right out the door. It also highlights the laughably bad character models, since most of the intro focuses on your family and the moments leading up to the bombs going off. So you're looking at a lot of faces close up.

I thought the intro part was quite short, shorter than Skyrim or Fallout 3's intro area. I mean you just run to the vault then run back out 200 years later basically lol.

Logged 4 hrs this morning. Impressed across the board. Really liking pretty much everything about this game so far. Doesn't support Crossfire yet but aside from that runs very well on ultra at 1080p with a 7970 and 4790k@stock. Very Happy.

My F4 still has four or so hours left to download, how are the controls via mouse and keyboard or is Xbox gamepad recommended?..I normally use good old mouse and keyboard.

The controls (mouse\KB-only here) seem ok to me. I changed vsync and mouse accelleration but haven't relaunched yet to see how it affects gameplay.

The interface is definitely designed for an xbox controller, but I've been trying to use KB/M because I don't like using a controller for shooting. I think the controller trumps it in every other aspect of the game though.

Just outside of the vault, I'm dropping to 40fps sometimes. Might need to dial back from the suggested Ultra on everything.

Plus the cartoon at the front, plus the interlude in the house with the wife and kid (part of which was about character customization). Anyway, seemed longer to me.

Now I know some people will do not like Conan O'Brien but here is his into for last nights episode

which leads into the Clueless Gamer segment

Damn I wish I had less work today, or it was released last week when it was quiet

Heh! Definitely worth watching!

I also don't feel bad about not getting the worthless Pip-Boy edition; apparently it sucks. I want to WEAR mine in cosplay, not just sit on a shelf.

Thanks guys for the controller feedback.

Think I'll try mouse and keyboard since I've played all fallout games that way so far.

Steam servers getting a bit hammered here in UK ,peak time at almost 8pm here, my download speed went from 3.3 hours to no download data , then back to 11 hours before F4 is fully downloaded and right now back to 3.5 hours.

Lucky I'm a patient guy.

Update: Now back to 1 day lol ,oh well what to do in the meantime 🙂 .

I have to revisit the idea of FO4 coming free with a video card (and considering the performance increase, it'll be an nVidia offer!)

My 960 will play it just fine, probably maxed once overclocked (got a super-cooled version) but an $80C value included would justify an upgrade or even SLI. 😉

After playing for maybe 6 hours here's my quick list of positives and negatives

+ Nice setting, world feels lived in
+ Enjoyed the intro, thought it was quick but interesting and a lot better than New Vegas
+ Crafting seems excellent, very detailed and a step up from Skyrim
+ Guns have a nice feel to them and VATS is still useful
+ Audio is excellent.
+ Not many bugs or glitches so far
+ Seems to be a strong selection of weapons (not sure about armor yet)
+ Good performance, as to be expected.

- UI is terrible, just as bad as Skyrims.
- Don't like the new perk/skill system mash up. Not sure why they felt the need to fix something that wasn't even broken. This is a big deal.
- Graphics are mediocre and it feels like a reskinned Skyrim
- Some of the voice acting is surprisingly bad
- Map feels a bit compressed, there's hardly any open areas.
- You cannot see holstered weapons on your character. Wtf
