Failing a college class sucks

Maintained a 4.0 for major and my liberal studies/electives up until this point. I'm in my last year of college. I didn't "round up" either--never got anything short of a 4.0 in any of my classes. I'm a CS major.

This semester I had my job (20 hrs/week), and 6 classes. Something had to suffer. Unfortunately it was the class I cared most about.

I don't even think it was the extremely busy schedule right now, but rather a culmination of burn out waiting to boil over. Extreme amounts of stress and I haven't had more than a day off in like 2 years (between school and work... I never could "relax" and get away from it). Even now, I'm trying to juggle between a billion people talking to me on the phone and that. I can't stand it all, feels like my brain is going to vomit from the stress.

I didn't get a 70, 60 or even 50. I'm finishing off with a 35. There won't be a curve, either. Everyone did extremely well in the class (senior programming) except me.

Tip to college youngins: don't try and juggle too much at a time, burn out bites us all in the azz.

Bah, think I'll go for a nice night walk with some cool, fresh air to calm down. Between this and finals and my GPA going to ****, I'm tired of the whole ordeal. So much for grad school.

Does your school have some sort of grade forgiveness policy where you can re-take the course next semester and replace your current grade?

You can retake the class and submit a grade change form and it will replace that grade with the new one, or at my school anyway.

Right, because an F in a 3-credit class out of a minimum of 124 credits (of which you have made 4.0s) is going to cause your GPA to go to sh!t and bar your from graduate school. Stop acting the drama queen, figure out what you did wrong, and fix it.

As long as you did well throughout most of your college, you should be fine for grad school. Most people will understand as long as you have a pretty good explanation as to what happened.

sums it up good :)

i admit defeat

You do have to be philosophical about these things. One thing that helps is admitting and critically assessing the mitigating factors.

You're not ruined for life, really, this is a very minor setback from which you'll recover.

Failing to admit that this happened for a reason and therefore failing to deal with the reasons this happened will defeat you.

Take it easy.

Good luck, get back on the horse.

One failed class does not ruin your chances for grad school. Most universities allow you to retake 2 classes over the course of your degree and substitute the higher grade so that it does not affect your GPA. Take a deep breathe and check your options. Have a beer. :)

I have failed 2 classes, but it's a community college so they treat me like a little kid.

I don't see how you can get a 4.0 all through CS and fail a programming class, with a 35 of all grades.

LOL!

I'm taking community college classes and they're the same way :)

I find it hilarious.

Haven't failed any yet though.. I'd totally be cool with retaking the class though..

I failed 5 classes in college, 2 times in the same one, which is really sad. Now I'm working for my doctoral in physics. Not everything can be measured with numbers and letters.

This is an easy problem to fix. you get the class withdrawn, changed to "W" on your transcripts. (If your school has this policy). Initially, your transcript will forever carry the "W" next to the grade that you would have received. There is a one-shot solution to end your misery and save your ass--The wonderful letter from the counseling department. It sounds like you haven't exhausted the resource so here is your chance.

Make an appointment with student health to see a counselor. COnvince the counselor that you are stressed out in life, too much to deal with, you feel that you are sinking into depression, the weight of your performance in this class is too much to bare. If you must, (and it doesn't trouble you), make up some BS about your parents getting divorced (If they are divorced, so much the better). If the counselor plays game, then they will right you a letter, send it to R&R, and the grade is forever whiped form your transcript, and will never affect your GPA. Worked for me my first year in school and I never looked back.

Of course, it could be a problem when you start to believe the BS you create for this counseling session....

Yeah, fortunately the school has a forgiveness policy. Unfortunately the class isn't offered next semester. Maybe I can supplement it with something similar (the class wasn't a requirement, actually).

I'll see what I can do. Not trying to act dramatic, but, yeah, acknowledging that I'm human.

In many ways I think failing is a good thing...it can teach you a lot about life and prepare you for later on.

I'm not going to let it defeat me forever--just for today :) Tomorrow I'll have a plan to get over this and fix the GPA. I'll talk to the peeps in charge.

Actually the depression is somewhat real. Throughout college I stressed so much between school, work, and starting a business along with some family problems.

This last 4-6 months I've been worn down like hell. I'm on some muscle relaxants for the stress and anxiety which helps me cope. I was also largely depressed from the stress of it.

But I don't want to play this card, really. It's kinda a chump move to make. (no offense to anyone). if I keep my GPA, I want it to be through legitimate means that apply to everyone and not just me (if that makes sense).
