But you'd still like to live here? Strom Thurmond is dead. That alone shows progress for SC.
hah, ok you get that one! 😀

I don't base my decisions around the political affairs of a governing body. My biggest concern is the laws that can directly affect me.
SC seemed to be a place to run away to. I lived on folly beach.

If you live in that part of the state, its definately a place to run away to... But come to Greenville and I'll buy you a beer and tell you why SC > all, and you can tell me why SC <= all.

I grew up in CA and have been all over the country. The Southeast was among the best places to live.

In fact, in my experience the only people who bleat bullsh!t like yours are people who have never spent any time in the South and speak from a position of ignorance.

Okay. You're a quick-talking-dumb-thinking-dumba$$ 😉 😉 😉

amen! and they can take the fvcking midwest with them, with their freeloading government-subsidized agricultural economies.

you guys realize the red states would starve without the blue states? except for texas, of course. they've got enough oil to last 'em for a while. but seriously, if you take away the auto industry and tech industy, which blue owns, plus pretty much the entire industrial, financial, entertainment, and clothing industries (minus fvcking nashville), all you're left with is oil (we can buy it from a bajillion other sources and already do) and agriculture (same, PLUS that actually costs us tax money now and wouldn't if we told you to take a hike).

so maybe the red states should think a little harder before biting the hands that feed them.

You will be the first to go during the civil war.

You need the food we grow silly.

Farms in the US overproduce and continue to do so because they are paid to do so by the government. There are farmers that produce crops, then store them in large silos or dump them, then repeat. Imagine the type of person it takes to do that? To run a farm that is basically worthless. But greed is a powerful force. There are many poor farmers, but plenty of rich ones too.

So sure, we need the food you grow, but not much of it.

So, California boy, who made you an expert on the subject?

I'm a farmer, so let me clue you in to something other than the anti-agriculture propaganda you're spewing:

It is very rare for farmers individually store grain for more than 6-9 months. The companies farmers sell produce to may store it for a very long time (this is what is called the "reserves") but that is out of the farmers hands. Actually, the governement itself owns much of the reserves so they can feed countries we blow up.

With exception of large corporate farms, farmers often work for equity. They may be worth a million dollars but only have $1000 in their checking account and $10 in their wallet. Equity comes and goes with market whims. For example, land in 1970 here was worth about $125/acre. Now it's $800+. So now the farmer that bought in 1970 is rich, even though he still doesn't have any extra money in his pocket to show for it unless he borrows money against his land.

I'd love to hear you tell Detroit "So sure, we need the cars you produce, but not many of them."
Or tell the oil companies "So sure, we need some of the oil you produce, but not much of it."

It's just as stupid.

The governement does subsidize agriculture. But we don't all take it. I don't.

And, just to clue you in, the governement also has a program called the Conservation Reserve in which they pay farmers to take land out of production and NOT farm. So the government intrusion doesn't completely favor overproduction.

Also, if we are overproducing, why do we continually import grain (mostly soybeans) from overseas? Can we not even supply domestic consumption?

Think, California boy. Life isn't all asphalt, movies, shiny cars, and dope. As the old saying goes, don't bite the hand that feeds you.

Won't see me say crap like this often but... OWNED. (Not the stupid "PWNED" variant)

Good thruthful info.

Not true. What a blatant ignorant statement.

I've been able to get out. I've lived in Texas, Florida, and then New Jersey. Now I am back in Texas. I can get out, I just choose to live here.

Michigan's the auto producer, but we've got lots of farmland too. Lotsa freshwater lakes... Michigan could probably be independent if it had to be.

But in all reality, this nation needs the south. Maybe northerners don't need southern morality or mentality, but the nation as a whole wouldn't function without everything else the south offers.

I like oranges too 🙁

The writer has a very poor grasp of history. His claim that all the Founding Fathers were from the Northeast is extremely ignorant. He must believe this because that is where they met. But half of them were from the southern states.

Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Patrick Henry and George Washington are the most notable southerners.

Actually, that's just the first ignorant blunder this guy makes.

There are quite a bit of historic accuracies and flawed assumptions throughout the piece.

I don't see any southerners moving up north, or even wanting to move north.
What I do see is all the northerners moving down south. And THAT is a fact.

No doubt. In CHarlotte..half of my school, maybe more, were not born in the south. Their parents had moved down here.

The south is fvcking retarded. Ignorance is an epidemic in the south. There are still fools in the north but IMO, the north isn't nearly as backwards as the south or more specifically, southern rural areas. This is how I feel about the south. I don't hate southerners, I hate their ignorance and their apparent refusal to open their eyes to logic.

Having grown up in the south and returning many times, I can honestly say that I feel sorry for the ignorance that is rampant in the south. I hope the south can learn how to effectively use logic and rational expression. And if more than 1 out of 100 southerners learn what propaganda is, it will be a great day in America. Manipulating southerners is like stealing candy from a baby. 😉

And before some rabid Confederate jumps on me, there are exceptions to every generalization I made above. And it's based on my experienes growing up in Arkansas. Guess what? It's anecdotal evidence, so go fvck yourself.

Dude..please..don't even compare a state like Arkansas to NC or Virginia. They are honestly like 10 years behind..it is sad.

No kidding. As a software developer in NC, I once took a call from a customer in upstate NY. After helping him with his problem, my slight southern drawl probably came through. He asked, "Are you from the South?" "Yes." Then, he said (I swear I'm not making this up), "I didn't know you guys had computers down there." Sarcastically (though not too much because he was a customer), I said, "Yes, we also have indoor plumbing, electricity and hi-speed DSL lines." I felt like saying that not only do we have as much technology as you, we're also polite.

I live in the south. I've travelled to the north many times. I can see why the Census shows people moving away from the north to the "Sun Belt" south. Less jerks per capita, IMO.

Certain states are known for producing more of something, but that does not mean that state is the only producer. When I said "Michigan's the auto producer", I meant Michigan is the state most refered to when talking about automobile production, not "Michigan is the only state that makes automobiles." I apologize for my inaccurate phrasing.

I did volunteer work in Appalachia for a bunch of summers/spring breaks in high school.

I actually had a pretty good time in the south, but we were forewarned not to tell anyone if we were either gay or catholic.

I probably wouldn't have gotten beat up over it, but it saved time in not trying to explain to protestants about how Catholics aren't pagan and don't worship false gods 😉
