Once for you, twice for me kind of gift ;)

Let them play all they want, just make sure they start F@H after they are done!

Quick question about F@H SMP version. I am about to reformat this machine (my primary rig), and I want to save the work that F@H is doing right now. I've got 6.6 hours before it finishes this work unit, but I'd rather not wait that long. What is the best way to save what it is doing, reformat, reinstall F@H SMP, and get the WU started where it's at? Should I do just the 'work' folder, or the entire folder, etc?

Hi and good morning FMC!

The best thing is to save the whole folding folder (with it's subfolders).
Then do the reformat.
Then do a reinstall of win, etc and Folding@home - preferably in the same directory structure you had before. Do not start the client!
Then copy the backup over the newly installed.
You should be OK - but this is may go wrong ... anyhow, it worked for me.

Edit: a number of spelling errors ... ;)

Excellent. I have everything in order, with the exception of my Office OneNote 2007 CD. Not sure where that is. But now that my 80% of the WU won't go to waste, time to get this thing going. Thanks Peter!! :)

It's working great here too. It's nice to have my Windows and a working PC while crunching on a par (very nearly) with the Linux boxes)

You need to copy the work folder, queue.dat and client.cfg to something portable. Once you're done with your OS re-install, re-install FAH, drop those files into the main FAH folder (overwriting the old ones). Run install.bat to "lock in" the new files, and proceed as normal.

That should do it.

I know how you feel. I intentionally did not do any drinking while I was doing the reformat. Once everything was ready, I deleted my RAID 0 array (two 150gb Raptors), and my RAID 5 storage array (5 x 400gb RE2s) disappeared. 1.6 terabytes, gone. :( I sat there working on it for a while, couldn't get it back. Finally I rebooted for the 5th or so time, and just sat there staring at it, trying to think about what to do, when Windows comes up with the "found hardware - Areca RAID controller" balloon. :| Then my drives showed up, as they should be.

I went to bed after that. Losing 1.6 terabytes worried me.

BTW, that worked wonderfully. After messing things up a few times (zipped to wrong folder, then forgot to run install.bat), the work unit was finished last night. Thanks!

I'm starting out small to see if I'm really interested. I have a Shelby Cobra waiting for me to assemble, I'm heading out to hobby town to pick up some paint. I was curious if you usually build plastic, wood or metal? The Cobra I'm working on is plastic but I think it would be awesome to get into wood or metal at some point!

metal auto models are a blast to build and if you do it with patience, they are awsome when you are done! Invest in a set of small files and work the pieces (remove flash) and paint them before you assemble. great hobby!

Where can I find them? (the models) Every place I've been just carries plastic!

Usually it's the little neighborhood hobby shop that has been there forever and has an old guy with several missing teeth running the place.

I'd give Google a try too

hrrrrm. Coincidence? :)

This was (and it's obvious) one of the first websites I ever put together 10+ years ago. My Grandfather worked for Shelby American, and... well. I have lots of stories...

Well, we have done less building than assimilating. With the assistance of the IT guy (who is getting to be a pretty good friend of mine), we now have 2 C2Ds, 1 quad core P3, around 7 P4s, and his Q6600 crunching. We are in the process of updating and upgrading though, after Christmas season is over and done with. :)

WOW!

That is an awesome image!

I think I enjoy building these enough to really get into it. So now I just need to start getting materials, and find a blasted place that sells metal ones! (Can't wait to get back to Chicago!)
