I guess I need more than 512mb.
Games like 2002's UT2003 already need more than 512 MB to run well.

Who else wants a return to the old-school demos like Doom, where you got a whole lotta bang for your no-bucks?
Like Quake with episode 1 (a quarter of the game for free). That rocked.

Seems to me what Doom3 was supposed to be, dark, scary, and what doom forgot, fun.

Doom3 was fun, dark and scary.

To me, this looks like what HL2 should have been: fun, dark, scary.

Demo looks nice.

Have to break ranks with you here Rolls: Half-Life 2 was perfect just how it was. It's post-apocalyptic setting is far better than the millions of "me too!" games that try to be scary.

Doom 3 was fun, but Half-Life 2 cooked it.

Besides, the only game that's really been truly scary in the past 5 years that I can recall is Clive Barker's Undying, which was *fantastic*.

A pity it flopped at retail.

That's what makes life interesting Insomniak, difference in tastes and opinions. I think TOOLs "Aenima" may be the best rock album of all time and Beethovens 9th as the best symphony of all time. You probably don't.

Who's right? Who can say.

I just tried the demo. The graphics are nice, but I cant count how many times I got scared of my own shadow (LOL).

I ran it at 1024x768, 4xAA, 8xAF, everything max settings. The system specs:

A64 Venice 2.5ghz
256mb radeon x800 OC'd 440/900
2x512 OCZ VX ddr500
74gb raptor

The fps was usually between 40 and 70, although sometimes the game stuttered a bit. Obviously to get playable fps I'd have to turn some features off, but I'm fairly surprised I can run it even that well at max settings. The load times are actually faster than BF2. The gameplay - usually dark and scary is not my kind of game, but it was fun though.

I've also ran some stats on the game while playing (using good ole ati tray tools - that program has everything :)) and so far I've seen the game using up around 630mb of ram, and about 220mb video mem, and thats at 10x7 4x8x max settings. With games like this, I would imagine if you run at a higher resolution and have a fast enough card, it would require more than 256mb video mem.

Oh it does. I got like 10 fps average when everything was maxed at 16x12. It went pritty damn close to 256mb, if not over. So it looks like it payed off to have the 512mb ultra :).

Finally had time to sit down and play the demo. I tried it out earlier just to see how it plays on my first "Enthusiast" build.

About the game. GOOD LORD, this is the first game that has really made me jump and really scared me. I got goose bumps in my arms in certain spots of the game, especially the part where he walks through the door and you see footprints on the floor and the girl shows up. I jumped and got scared more in this short demo, than I have ever been in any recent movie. Looks to be a great game, and will most likely pick it up

About the game in terms of performance. This is the first game that I think has made my 7800GTX sweat at high resolution, meaning 1600X1200. Ever since I got done with this build, I don't play any games lowers than 1600X1200. This is the first time I think I would have to settle for lower resolution for it to play in the frame rate I want it to. It still playable wtih everything on high at 1600X1200, but soft shadow absaloutely is a work out for my card. If theres any game out there that'll make me want an SLi setup with dual GTXs, this is going to be it.

I'd like to see some bencharks or see the average FPS with an SLi system. Is the game tweaked for SLI setup? I mean I know there are some games that don't benefit at all from a dual card setup, would this be one of them?

Aight...that was a bit short for my liking...

Damn creepy in parts i must say, but WTF does it run like sh!t on my system

I had everything set high + i have AA set @ 4x & AF @ 8x, & i was gonna play at 1280x960 (since they have no 1280x1024 :|).

But i couldn't even play at those settings smoothly :Q

Had to drop to 1024x768 for decent gameplay, & even still, it stuttered alot.

I know it's pretty decent graphics, but somehow i think the Doom 3 engine is just sh!t.

If the graphics were revolutionary, i can understand, but they aren't. At all.

If indoor dark spooky environments is all the Doom 3 engine can handle, i FEAR for Q4. I have this feeling it's going to be ruined...

news flash: IT'S NOT RUNNING ON THE DOOM 3 ENGINE!!!!

I don't see why so may people think it is. IMO it looks way better than doom 3. Best graphics I've ever seen in a game, anyway. (I mean did you ever press the slo-mo button!?)

it is a bit taxing on the system, though. Hopefully it will be more efficient by the time the game is released.

HAHA....got my little brother to try the game out. He almost jumped off the seat when that big guy broke through those doors, and he cringed when that little girl showed up while he was climbing down the stairs and cringed some more when he saw the other guy when he got down the stairs. He gave up there and said he didn't want to play the game at night.

I hope they can tweak it more to run better, so maybe I won't have the urge to get another video card to pair with the one I have

Now i feel like an idiot.
For some reason, i thought it was based off the Doom 3 engine

Really though, regardless, it seems to suck [resources].
I have to say that it's extremely annoying to have the highest end AGP video card out there, a great CPU, & a gig of RAM, & still be unable to play a newer game at the settings i want :(

Ah well, i finally see why people buy consoles...

Oh, & as for the slow-mo effect...damn that was freakin' kewl :D
That's pretty much the reason i downloaded the demo :)

I did like that alot!

Very creepy, that dude at the bottom of the ladder, I actually said "WHOA" out loud and shot at him.

I love when games give me goosebumps.

Undying I couldn't play by myself (wimp, yeah, I know, I jump during MOHAA and COD, so no surprise there... :p) and I hope this game is just as good overall!

Undying was a very cool game, with one fatal flaw:
VERY few monsters. All howlers, all lizards, etc..

In this rig, I had to dial down to medium settings, turn off AA and set to 12x9 resolution, just to play this game ~30fps. Its a great game, it looks good, but its frustrating that it runs so slow.

I have a system with specs nearly identical to yours g33k, and I found that 1024x768 with most stuff at maxium runs better than 1280x960 without all that and looks a little better as well; keeping the fps generally in the 40s even with vsync on. I suppose looks comes down to a matter of personal preference, but I just figured I'd throw that out there.

Also, Don't run maxmum quality textures unless you don't mind swapping or have a 512mb card. The maxumum quality textures option can easly push things over 256mb of video ram.

I just gave it a shot. Seems fun. Graphics are on par with HL2 including NPC faces IMO. However while I was playing the cops showed up because they had a report of an assualt Apparently my Asus 9600XT and P4 3.2E felt they had been abused! At on 800xx600x32 at that! ;)

Seriously? Cops showing up is a real possibility for me, given my neighborhood. And my neighbors are always wondering WTF is going on in my apartment. (When I'm gaming. and sometimes when I'm not) :)

Yeh the fear factor with this game was diminished when I kept turning the volume down , I didn't want to freak out the neighbors ...

Where are ypu guys finding all these advanced settings? In the game, don't have any of these settings, and that configuration utility isn't worth much either. I have to enable everything through the NV control panel. Even more annoying, if I even just pull up the the in game vid settings it changes my settings in the settings.cfg file from 1680x1050 to whatever the default is on the menu (since 1680x1050 doesn't exist).

So far I like the game though and I'll probably buy it when it comes out.

Is FRAPS the best way to bench this game, or is there a built in bench utility? ("FEAR" is a lame thing to try to google)

I have been tinkering with SLI profiles... So far SFR and AFR "feel" about the same to me with 4xSSAA/8xAF @1680x1050.

Rollo? What settings are you running with?
