Do you think they are stealing petrol/diesel that is rightfully yours?

Or maybe you think they're using road space that is rightfully yours?

Or maybe you feel intimdated by one when it pulls up beside you at the lights and you're level with the driver's door handle? ;)

Seems to me it's a bit like disliking dual core CPUs or people who own them and don't have a use for them 'in your opinion'...

I personally have an issue with people blasting their handling on road, since it's clear they're not a sedan and shouldn't be driven as such, but i couldn't care less whether you have a 4WD and don't take it off road...or tow, or have a large family and take it camping etc...

I don't hate people that have them, and in many cases I think people use them as they were intended.

I do though, dislike people who buy them just because it's a status symbol or something, and then drive around in them as if they are a sedan. They forget how tall they are, and how much the balance is different from a lower riding car, and go out speeding and flipping them over. About 3/4 of the accidents around town here are lone SUVs hitting something or losing control or flipping over, it's getting pretty bad.

I drive a small car, since it's just me, and I prefer better gas mileage over power and "status". I drive my car as it was intended to be driven, and thankfully it handles well enough to help me avoid the many idiots around here who like changing lanes without signaling or cutting you off or just plain running through stop signs.

I was more worried about myself... if it gets much warmer in here than it already is, I'm liable to become a puddle on the floor  :(

I bought an SUV for my wife.
We live in snow country and she hauls the kids around.
4WD has come in handy plenty of times.

I drive a 4 Cyl Ford Ranger regular cab, short bed.
It suits my needs well.

On days when we have a fresh snowstorm the SUV is the vehicle that will get me to
work.

I dont drive the SUV more than neccesary with gas at $3 a gallon, but there are
days when only a 4WD will get me to work.

If I could afford a 3rd vehicle I would get one. A regular car for the wife and kids
for use in good weather... but I already have 2 car notes... 3 is out of the question.

Peace
Rich

EDIT: plus having a big heavy vehicle with AWD/4WD also helps a lot with an unbraked heavy trailer in hilly country or off road...

I don't hate SUV drivers at all. I am not filling their gas tanks so who am I to judge. Once gas prices break the $4 mark, and the owers (who aren't wealthy) are all going broke, there will be a reverse in the SUV trend, if there hasn't been one already.

Yeah you are right about that... I am to cheap to ever tow anything.. because
of the strain it causes the tranny. In the rare case that I must tow something
I would rent a vehicle for towing.

I only have problems with people who buy SUV's because they're fookin' dik-holes who feel so insecure that they have to have a bigger beast, and post things on stupid computer forums that no-one taes seriously, with the intention of starting sh1t because something happened on a Saturday night.

as for people who don't need them (commuting to/from work by yourself):
a) the extra demand for gas causes higher prices
b) the extra weight causes the road to wear out faster
c) the extra gas burnt causes more environmental problems
d) you can't see around/over/through the damn things if you're not at the same height as them

I'm willing to overlook all of those if and only if SUV owners thinks that the wars that we are fighting in the Middle East has absolutely nothing to do with oil.

-take up more street parking space than a sedan
-headlights are often aimed so that they're hitting me right in the eye
-can't see around them on a road to see the road ahead (especially since 99.9% of them seem to have their rear windows tinted)
-too many people who don't know how to drive drive suv's, giving the rest of the drivers a bad name

a) thats gotta be totally insignificant in the big picture...
b)again, i suspect that would be totally insignificant on a well laid bitumen road...
c)link/proof/significance of this effect?
d)never had a problem with that in my 323 hatch myself.

I agree with you in principle on all of those myself, but are those really reasons to HATE 4WDs/owners...hate is a pretty strong emotion for me at least...I think in that situation it IS wasteful...but if you follow that thought to it's logical conclusion so is a focus/excel driver by himself, let alone a camry/accord/commodore/falcon, he COULD be on a motor cycle and all your points would apply to him... indeed would apply considerably more to that comparison ;)
