Just a quick note for the worriers out there. It took 72 hrs for my newly registered domain name to propogate through all dns before I could use it to get to my site.

Registered through Namecheap.......

For anyone having problems with "domain temporarily unavailable", I finally got a tech support guy to say they would add it manually. I'll let you know if that works out 🙂

SSH works flawlessly with these accounts. I use putty for windows to access mine. You can get your login information from the admin control panel. I had to login to change some permissions on some folders.

I used my cell phone for the confirmation. From what I understand, the way those scams usually work is they change/add your long distance provider. I am pretty sure they can't do anything like that to a cell phone, and even if they managed to you can bet your ass I would bitch and moan untill it was taken off.

my ftp and ssh acts weird. no matter what i do, it tells me the password is wrong the first time i enter it. after i re-enter it everything works fine, but it never works the first time =\

I also used putty to access my webspace. Worked great. It helps to have a background in Linux/Unix and know your way around a command prompt.

hi, first i want to say thanks for all the great deals. (a long time lurker, first time poster)

next, i signed up for the free webspace and am trying to sign up for a .tk domain. however, when i get to the second page of the sign-up process, i get this error:

"It seems that the URL you provided does not exist or is by itself already a redirected URL, which cannot be redirected again by Dot TK. Please choose another URL."

i entered http://s88765076.onlinehome.us for my website. in the control panel it still says "applying" if that matters. thanks for the help.

See, the problem with .tk domains is you can't redirect to one someone's already redirecting to...I had one going to my website, and then when I tried to do it again, it wouldn't let me. (Same if I tried with a subdomain or subfolder.) It might be that the first person who did this deal + .tk got a great deal, since no one had been forwarding to them...but now that someone has, it might not be allowing it anymore...or you just have to wait a little longer for things to propogate.

what is up with PHP? is it by far the best way to set up a webpage, or something? i'm wondering what other options there are.

thanks!
kevin

There some good PHP scripts you can use for your site that may give you the functionality you're looking for. But it all depends on what you really want to do with your site. Stuff like PHPNuke, Invision, etc are all portal type systems for "news-like" sites. Good place to start looking at stuff is hotscripts. They have a slew of PHP scripts available for download. But if you're not familiar with webservers, php, and/or mySQL it might be a bit hairy. If these are things you're not too familar with, might be easier publishing content and making your website more static. Hope this helps a bit! 😀

You have to wait till it propagates before directing it to your .tk domain.

Soo do I need to pay with rackshac to get a domain name or can i get a free one from tk and still have it work with 1and1? im confused... :?
Getting a .tk one works fine.
All the .tk addresses do is point to the site, and forward email. So it works fine if
- all you want is a pointer to your site,
- you don't care if the actual site or links appear when people surf the site
- you don't want to send mail using your domain name
- you don't want multiple email addresses

Which for many people, is fine. If you want a fully functioning site, you need a domain name.

How do you redirect it with a .tk? What address do you forward it to? I haven't signed up for it, but I do have a .tk that I could probably use for it...
Sign up with 1&1. They assign you a subdomain address .... 9021000.onlinehome.us or something. Point the tk address to that. But don't expect it to work until it's done "applying" It works, trust me.

Awesome deal.

yup...installs and runs perfectly.

I signed up, and the service is very good for FREE. I pay $10/month for phpwebhosting.com, and the speed of their connection and servers is crap... I am considering moving to this new service.

Here is my site on 1&1

I just installed PHP Nuke 6.9 on the site. I tried to get TikiWiki to go, but it wouldn't run properly, probably some functionality is disabled by the server admins that make tikiwiki not work. PHP Nuke installed quickly, and easily. If anyone needs assistance getting it installed, feel free to PM me. I'm new to it though, so you're on your own when configuring your site...

Anyone know how to get an image gallery to work in PHP Nuke 6.9? i saw some addons available on phpnuke.org, but they weren't made for version 6.9....

I was one that suggested that they might try, not to scam, but to bill you, at some later date, on your phone bill (as some companies can, for example, AOL dialup can be charged to your phone bill). Anyhow, I was thiinking about it earlier tonight, and another thought that I came up with, was that they used phone numbers to ensure that people didn't "double dip" on the web site offer, kind of like a "one offer valid per phone number" kind of thing. (I don't know if that's specifically true, is it? I doubt that they would give you two free sites at the same number though.) Also, they probably want to have a way to contact you directly, when the time comes for the free offer to expire, and they want to send their marketing people to coax you into continuing your service with them. I don't see how that they could outright charge you at that point, not having a credit-card number, unless they could charge it to your phone. Hopefully, they won't do sucha a thing.

anyone have any experiences with both phpnuke and postnuke? i had phpnuke running in a flash and looks great, but postnuke is being a huge pain in the @$$ to setup. which one is more convenient?

Ok.. Ordered the 3 year package... then I ordered the domain name from rackshack.net.. I immediately put the dns server addresses for 1&1 in the setup, I then started setting up my site info at 1&1 and transferred my domain to them. Was that correct? Or should I of waited to change the dns address on rackshack's end?

anyone using their builtin webpagecreator?
just wondering if you can use your own picture as the main visual image in certain layouts ...

how do you upload? or you have to do through ftp?
