just wondering if you can use your own picture as the main visual image in certain layouts ...

how do you upload? or you have to do through ftp?

I did it (started the automatic webpage creator), but it seemed like nothing happened so I installed php-nuke (6.9) instead. I use FTP to get my files up there.

Working pretty well........ I don't think you can though.....

One question though ....... Can you use the built-in website creator for Multiple Web sites? I seem to only be able to make one site.

n00b here:

I know very little about creating webpages besides very basic HTML but would like to learn and start my own website with this deal. Although I thought of myself as fairly computer literate, I have no idea how to do many of the things discussed in this thread (the mockery would abound if I mentioned which ones!). Does anyone know of any good books/software courses/webpages that would help a newbie out? There are lots out there, but I don't want to waste my $$ and time with lame ones.

Thanks in advance!

does anyone have a problem with downloading files you upload via ftp? I uplodated a few files(2-3mb each) (.avi, .zip, .exe) and type in the address in IE/Opera and it says 404 can't find file, but the file is there and I can see it on the ftp..

check they way your linking that is probably your issue.

Oh, I figured it out..you have to create the new folders/files inside of your folder that contains all the html and stuff (which was something like wsc638352 or something) if you want to download it

You can just upload to the root folder when you FTP to the site. Everything there is available for download.

fcastle, you might simply start with some simple "learn HTML in 24 hours" type books to get you started. You can probably get some used ones from Amazon.com for really cheap. From there you might move on to a PHP and MySQL book.

okay i searched the internet ... found a few FAQs ... but I'm still confused
I downloaded php-nuke ... and you have to upload through ftp to someplace on the server ... where? and how do you use it?

... thanks ... hehe sorry for this really noob question

My new rackshack domain got setup and ready to use in about 30 hours.. set up my first eMail account about an hour ago and got a test eMail yay. 🙂

Also.. been messing with their web creator and applied a layout to my new domain... I published it to the web.. but when i go to my domain it still has the generic 1and1 logo page.. does it take a long time for a published page to finally show up or is the creator busted?

Yep that was the first thing I had done =/ figured it out.. for some reason it wasn't taking effect to my own domain but was to the s878789 one even though i chose to edit my own one..

how do i get my ftp login and password????

i followed these instructions:
http://faq.1and1.com/5_software_ftp__publishing_/8.html

To get your FTP username and password, go to the Control Panel. and click on Web Space.
Step 2:
Click the Edit button next to the username. On the next screen that loads, you will see the password associated with that username. Write this information down so that you can use it with an FTP program.

problem is i dont SEE a friggin "web space" on my control panel.

For those of you looking for a great php photo album DAlbum is the best that I have found. Easy to setup and configure, and it works on 1&1.

It's really easy:

Log into admin.1and1.com

Click "Select Contract"

On the left side of the screen it will say "Configuration & Administration". 3 boxes down from there, it says "Web Space". Click that then "FTP Account"

got it working before, thanks though. this site is so damn hard to configure around, like i went to the faq page once, now i can't find it for the life of me. etc... crap like that. oh well, its free so i shouldn't complain
It's really easy:

I just signed up using a work number and an old street address, and everything went through smooth. Just waiting for my log-in email. Now I just have to figure out how to get things up and running, as I'm pretty new to using a host. I just have a quick question though (sorry if they've been asked already, but there are too many post to go through), but what is the best/cheapest place to register a domain name?

Anyway, amazing deal. Thanks

People here use godaddy or ratshack.

I'm still trying to master the configuration of my php site . . . but, are there any brave souls who want to show off their site? Us php newbies could use some good ideas.

I can't find the "ftp account" info. The only two listings under "Web Space" are "Shell access (SSH)" & "ySQL Administration"? does anyone know what the problem might be?

edit Nevermind, it's there now. I guess it took a little time to fully set up

You can't.
