is it better to set the "cost control" to 1.00 or 0.00?
i figure 0.00

is there a reason to set it to 1.00?

i would think that if you set it to 0.00, you are allowing an unlimited amount of money to be charged. set it to 1.00 to prevent being charged a ridiculous amount of money, should some asshole decide to link to some of your content.

From 1and1.com: Please note that the MySQL database may not under any circumstances be used for log evaluation operations (e.g., ivw), ad clicks, chat systems, banner rotations, or similar applications putting extreme loads on the database.
The MySQL database is stored on a separate database server behind a firewall to protect your data. You can only access this database server and your database exclusively through your site. Direct access to the MySQL database using a home PC (external ODBC connection) cannot be established.

You can't.

BS -- I uplodaded phpmyadmin to my website and it works great. I then password protected the directory it's in.

"signed up" and received the 1st phone call with 4 digit confirmation ID

Clicked on the link, submitted my 4 digit ID and I should receive a call within 30 minutes

That was 1.5 hours ago.

:frown:

What did I do wrong?

You will not receive another phone call. You should get another, and final, email.

Am I reading this correctly ??, Did they just add this or am I reading it wrong ?[

Thinking there had to be a catch somewhere. I signed up and went to set the "Cost Limit" to $1. Granted, they have no credit card information BUT I saw this on the "cost limit" screen:

Please note: Cost limit does not block the services or features in any way. This is a service provided to help you keep track of your spending.

If I read this correctly, they will NOT stop your hosting at the limit of $1 but continue to charge you as your bandwidth continues.

Admittedly, 5gig is a great limit BUT it doesn't look like there is a catch (other then an e-mail informing you) to keep them from running up charges against your account. I would rather they just kill access to the page until the next month.

Probably a stupid question, but can you run a game server on something like this? something like half-life tfc?

so far, my only beef with these guys is that they want a whole domain or nothing; they don't want to deal with subdomains... and that would've been just fine if they allowed full range of DNS settings:
my current provider, http://www.cheapestregistry.com, allows me to create subdomains which i can point wherever the hell i want - point at an IP address (A record), forward to a URL (URL redirect; 1&1 does ONLY this AFAICT), point to a mail server (MX and MXE), and a CNAME pointer. The only choices on 1&1's "control panel" are to point it to their space or to an external URL.
So, since i want to keep my A records, i have to use cheapestregistry.com's DNS servers to point a subdomain to 1&1's webspace via a URL redirect... only they're having problems or something... and can't remember the change i made... grrrr!

anyhoo... but FTP and SSH with multiple accounts rawk!

My apologies, I originally read the original post as MySQLAdmin. They have a FAQ on phpMyAdmin on their site.

Anybody used the domain registration thorugh 1&1 ? How long did it take until the webpage was usable ? Was there any period with 1&1 ads on it as they say they can do ?

I need to submit in 2 hours a newspaper real estate ad (for publication a week from now) and want to include a link to the domain I got through 1&1 last night.
I want to avoid a situation that the page would be still empty/not accessible next week...

Thanks.

just wondering if you can use your own picture as the main visual image in certain layouts ...

how do you upload? or you have to do through ftp?

you could probably use their creator with your own picture, but it would be kinda hard to do so. you would have to realign all of the tables and such. use the included Netobjects Fusion program instead of Website Creator. it's a lot better and more flexable. it would be easier to use your own picture with that, but the program is harder to learn/use.

you upload your files either by ftp or ssh.

Daud, expect the DNS update to take up to 72 hours for some people. I setup an account for a client and it took about 24 hours for me to get access, while for him it took more like 36 hours.

Exactly !
Signed up late evening and bought a domain through them (to accelerate possibly things and I do not need it after selling the house), after 12h later Domain Overview showed domain ready, after 18 h WHOIS had the data. I worked on first pages and layout using their creator (had to go to Mozilla on a Mac) but was not able to publish until this morning - so 36h since sign-up, I can see my domain www.mayowoodhome.com and can finish the pages to have pages like a realtor :D
For now, I would say a great experience.
