I am trying to find a good deal for a desktop system. Is it still *hot* if I buy only Dimension 4550 w/o the monitor for that price ?? or you think I can find better for reasonable price ?? I am not willing to pay more than $500. I already have a hard drive (40gb), video card (geforce4 4600), cd burner, pc2100 512mb (I used to use w/ my old AMD system, I am not really sure if it works w/ intel or not) and dvd player. So, the most thing I am considered about is the processor and the mobo. I don't want to build a system myself ( tried three times, and each time I try, my mobo fries).

Maybe someone will be able to tell you whether their 4550 works with PC2100 DDR. Someone said the memory timing should be asynchronous and should be able to slow down to accomodate PC2100 RAM. But it's just a guess for now. I'd want to carry over that 512MB PC2100 DDR module if I were you.

semalak:

If you add all the components you already have you have come pretty close to building a new system. Rather than tear apart a new working system and inserting your individually superior components, I think you would do better hiring someone to build your system for you or selling your stuff and buying the complete system. If you have fried three motherboards in your building attempts so far, I would stay away from installing (delicate) memory or expensive video cards, for example.

heres a good system with a monitor for a good price... nice case too!!

SYSTEM SPECS

the price is 599.00 in the store with a very nice monitor. you can add the staples 50 off 200 or 300 to get it even lower. not sure about the coupon tho. also, check to see if the $250 rebate from compaq has been applied already.

BigDaddy's shipping method shows - Carrier: APX / United States Postal Service

LongCoolMother - You should call Dell, something is fishy with your order.

ordered wed, shipped today.
standard config, 256mb, gf4, 40gig

LongCoolMother-
Mine was planned to ship 10/22-25 as well. Dell always overestimates the dates.
Maybe your configuration was "different"

i ordered the last day of the sale and my order is in "boxing" stage. My ship date isn't until Friday though. When do you think it'll ship?

My system went through all the stages from 10/8 to boxing and shipped 10/11. So if yours is being boxed it will most likely be shipped monday or tuesday.

Packages shipped by UPS can be tracked by reference number on UPS's web site. Just enter your dell order number. Mine is showing up as shipped 10/11 (friday) and estimated delivery date 10/14 (monday) so these are probably shipping from somewhere near the east coast.

Mine is already in town... should get it Monday... latest Tuesday... depending what UPS deems doable. But I tracked it and it is in the Atlanta Area. I am looking forward seeing this little gem. If I get it on Monday i make some pics and post it for the guys with questions.

I just checked my order status online and it says:

"Your order has been cancelled. If you feel this is an error, please reenter your order number to confirm this status. Please contact your Dell Sales Representative for additional information regarding this order."

WTF gives!? No consent/e-mail or anything! What do you guys suggest I do?

Dell uses advanced catapult technology to reliably deliver their goods in a cost efficient manner- it's dubbed airmax?.

I would duck if I were you.

hey, have any of you guys found any cheap 2700 ram that this bad boy takes?

I think I saw a post on the really Phat Wallet that posts the PNY mistake up again, for 49.99 after MIR.

What do you think about that for 256mb of ram?

Pricewatch also has Samsung ram for about 52 dollars, please let me know what you guys have found out?

Thanks!!!
