Ordered 3 of 2.6C on Dimension 8300. I like the case of 8300/4550 better. It's so damn quiet, you will not hear a thing from it except HDD :(.

One more thing about this 4550/8300 case, it's so easy to access inside the case especially that HS without Fan.

Anyone know anything about this?

I 2nd that. I have 2 4550's and the cases are really nice for a prebuilt case design. The drive rails are really handy and the screwless design of the PCI and case really make my day. Cooling layout is decent too but nothing amazing.

btw if you hear your HD it's cuz its a poopy seagate. I swapped my 60gig that it came with out and replaced it with Maxtor DM9 7200 rpm 8mb cache drives that are whisper quiet. I can't even hear them with the case open! The only thing that annoyed me was the craptacular case fan started buzzing in one. I have 2 thermaltake 80mm smart fan II's on the way ($8/per) to replace the case fans in my Dim.

was there any determination if it'd be better to run all four slots of RAM with the two 128 sticks and two more of your choice or to just run 2 sticks of better ram and take out the 128 sticks?

just release by dell today. Dell sees no increase in demand for PC's but still expects to have a growth rate of 15% for the quarter. Let's see no demand but still have a 15% increase. This can be done only one way and that is to aggressively price cut their pcs.

The processor and video card alone are over $500

Intel OEM model for Dell with a 865PE chipset on the 4600 and a 875P for the 8300.

roughly (most prices from good cheap vendors like newegg)
2.8ghz 800fsb CPU ($280) -retail with heatsink+fan
2.6ghz 800fsb CPU ($240) -retail with heatsink+fan
Radeon 9800 non pro ($300-$320 currently not on market yet IIRC MSRP = $349)
256mb 400mhz CL3 RAM (techincally unpricable since no retailers sell 128mb chips, 256mb = $50)
30 gig 7200rpm HD ($50 or less)
CD-ROM ($10)
Windows XP home ($100)
Office XP OEM ($100-150 for OEM educational)
Case and PS ($60-70)
keyboard and mouse ($20)

Looks like the deal has changed - so far, it seems for the worse.

Can't quite identify the changes, but the price seems higher.

the change is there's no more 100 instant off.

stupid me I had to go to the bathroom

damn body. I hate you. though the rebate is still listed and seems the form is the same for the dimension systems even the rebate times that was a month ago use the same form. Maybe if you want the system you can sneak it in as it doesn't have any listed dates on it.

but it was 640 after tax and rebate for me. So I"m hoping tommorow or friday dell comes out with something to make extra 90 bucks worth it.

dammit, I had it in my cart for the past day and I just didnt pull the trigger...I'm kicking myself real hard right now. I planned on buying it. I'm so frustrated now...ARRGH! I guess I'm gonna call at 7:00am and see what they can do. The $100 instant is still listed on the first page, but just wont show up after that. Hoping for the best.....

Edit: I placed the order anyway and wrote them a long e-mail to see if I can still get the $100. Oh wellz, if I cant then I guess I'll cancel. I'm sure another deal will come up.

If i were you, i would go ahead and place the order right now. Would also save a copy of the page showing $100 instant off and would also print it out. Then, when you get your order number from DELL with the incorrect price, call them up, fax them the copy of the page showing $100 off and they should give you the discount since technically you did order the system when it said $100 off instantly.

I have done this personally but YMMV. if not, you can always cancel the order....if you really want the system, its worth a try. Worse comes the worst, your not gonna loose anything except some time on the phone call.

Man, I think it went up an extra $100 on top of no longer having the $100 instant, seems like it's $200 more to me. And no more free Office XP.

I was going to order 2 of these today for 2 people. They agreed that I could pull the R9800's and just replace them with a geforce and install aftermarket modems and CDRW's. I was then gonna sell the R9800's on Ebay for my trouble. Now that Dell changed the deal, I just lost a potential easy $400-$500. Everybody would have been happy, even the ebay buyers for getting a card that runs at 9800 Pro speeds, which I would have sold for much less then the $350-380 they are paying for 9800's :(

That's what I planned on doing and sent my order in last night anyway. Just got off the phone with them. Got the runaround a bit, because I got connected to 2 people who have no idea what's going on. Finally they connected me with my sales rep and she was more than willing to give me my $100 back...WOOHOO. Bad mood = gone!!

well I got my 4600... The case sucks! Its small, cramped and drives are a b!tch to install. Reminds me of the old cases, just a little better, but barely. I am going to put it into a Antec 1080AMG with a True 430 PSU (Check staples antec case deal thread). I'll have to see if I need that $10 power converter but I think it's a dell PSU thing, not the mobo.

Only problem is that when I swapped my HD's over I thought I could reinstall... there is an admin password to reinstall... I am calling dell to see if they know the password because it is not a default and I sure as heck didnt put one in. My 400mhz RAM is also only coming in at 266mhz...

OK let me elaborate:

I just realized I posted this in the 8300 thread not the 4600 thread but anyways,
the case. The case on the 4600 is smaller, I'd say about 3/4 the size of the 4550/8300 case. It doesn't open up like a clam shell like the other so its a pain to access the back of the optical drives due to how close the back of it is to the PSU. It also has no drive rails which I can deal with. Installation is not too hard, it's plugging the ide and audio cables in such a tight space is hard. I actually had to plug in the cables first then thread them through the 5.25" bay and set my drive in. The Hard drive bays are also mounted vertically. Although drives can run in any which position, I always find HD's don't like being mounted in a non normal fashion. Usually for me it results in premature aging of the HD bearings and they start screeching. That just my personal experience, not a rule. The rest of the case is ok, the exterior is nice and they put the front side ports facing forward instead of that stupid 45 degree downangle on the 4550. Other then that it's ok, just not fun to work in.

I reinstalled XP home from my dell recovery disk. It worked and I am running ok now. The admin password i reffered to before shouldn't effect you. I spoke with dell tech support and they don't know about the password or why it's active. They is also a known bug with some windows XP CD's that ask for this password when it's not supposed to. This is not a dell issue, but a windows XP issue. Google "XP admin password reinstall" or something and you'll see some complaints about it. I reinstalled XP and it's finally working now but my RAM is registering at 266mhz which is totally off. The 865PE chipset is supposed to run at either 33mhz DDR or 400mhz native. My RAM is all 400mhz PC3200. I don't know why it's running on the dell bios menu as 266mhz. It is running dual channel and the HT is on. Everything is starting to look ok but the RAM. I am currently running Dell's bootable system checker CD. It's been testing everything for about 3 hours now on the long test. Haven't seen any problem yet. I will also start swaapping RAM to try to isolate if there is a problem with one of the chips. I didnt try just Dell's stock chips. I installed my kingston Hyper X PC3200 CL2 ram from the start so maybe thats the problem. I wish I had a board that could run 400mhz DDR so I could test it but I don't. Dell's bios gives you no options to corce a speed ot timing on RAM either.

I'll let you know what happens.

Can Sandra or some other software tell you the true speed of a chip regardless of what it is running? Perhaps mislabeled chips?

Thanks for keeping us informed, can you possibly take pics of the case inside and out?

I can host them.
