How is the 8300 case better than the 4600?
I have been looking at the new cases for the 4600 and the 8300. It appears that when Dell went from the 4550 to the 4600 they started using the same size case as the 2350. Before the new series came out the case for the 4550 and the 8250 were the same mid size style case with the 2350 being smaller. Now the 2350 and the 4600 share the same smaller case and the 8300 still has the mid size style case.

Can anyone confirm this observation?

BTW, nice deal on the 8300.

Oh damn I hope that you're wrong because I really liked the 4550 case.

Quite roomy, easy to work with, upgrading RAM, adding PCI cards or another drive was quick and easy.

Please be wrong!

I've got my brand new 4600 fresh out of the box and it is not the same case as my 4500. No clamshell, no rails for the drives, no locking mechanism across the PCI cards. This is a run of the mill metal MicroATX case. The only benefit I find in this case so far is the smaller size (which may be a negative for some). I'm thinking that this is another Palo Alto case.

Is anyone else getting the free 3 year warranty?

Says free after $59 MIR

Is it combinable with the $150 MIR?

Also, is the mobo and power supply ATX or something special? I'd probably throw in my 430W Enermax if I can

Is there room for 3 hard drives in this thing?

Questions:

Are the motherboard and power supply ATX, so I can put the mobo in another case with a different power supply, or put a bigger power supply than the one it comes with?

How man expansion bays are there? I'd like to fit hard drives, a DVD drive, a CDRW, and a floppy. There enough room?

How many ram slots are on this board, what comes with it? Is this like the 4600 deal where all the slots need to be full for maximum performance? Curious so I know what ram to get (PC2700 right? I've been out of the hardware loop a while).

Thank you for confirming this, damn!

I really liked the 4550's larger case, shouldn't have sold mine.

Um, having trouble getting the deal on the lappy...

Have everything set to base, still comes out a bit higher, and there's no free extra battery or office xp available...

I believe Dell motherboards take their own power plug, although I've heard you can buy a $10 adapter that will let you use another board or PS. I would say look at the thread for the 4600 deal, IIRC I saw in there.

Assuming the case is the same as the one for the 4550, which I think it is, there are 2 external 5.25" bays for a CD and/or DVD player/burner. I currently have a CDRW and DVDRW in my 4550. There are also 2 external 3.5" bays for a floppy drive and/or zip drive. I have a floppy drive in my 4550 and the other bay is empty right now. And there are 2 internal 3.5" bays for hard drives. I have 1 60gb HD and the other is empty. (that will change when my 120gb drive comes in tomorrow :) ).

As for the ram, I know the 4550 took PC2700, but that's because it was only 333MHz. The 8300 is 400MHz so I believe for the full potential, you'd need PC3200. As for filling all slots, I'm not sure about that, but I've heard the same.

For the free 3 year warranty service, I quote from the details:

"Offer valid on orders placed between 5/22/2003 and 6/11/2003. Rebate must be postmarked within 30 calendar days of system ship date. Rebate checks are ordinarily processed within 10-12 weeks. Click here for rebate coupon and details. Cannot be combined with free memory offer."

So, that means you can't get the $150 and the warranty I would assume, as the $150 is the same as the memory offer.

On the "free" 3 year warranty..I believe what is free is the upgrade from the normal 3 year warranty to the "Complete" 3 year warranty. You still would have to pay for the normal 3 year warranty.

Its not a free 3 year warranty. Its free CompleteCare

"CompleteCare Accidental Damage Service is a repair and replacement service that covers most accidental damage (spills, drops, surges, breakages) to select systems or peripherals that is not covered under limited warranty2"

You have to pay for the 3 year warranty then they add completecare ($59) then you get a rebate for JUST the completecare portion.

MEMORY INFO:

Yes its dual channel 400mhz DDR RAM PC3200, but it will take PC2700 333mhz RAM. If you use PC2700 then everything will downgrade to the PC2700 speed. It's not gonna kill you but you're certainly going below standard native performance specs.

I stated the RAM spec in an above post.

The case is smaller but the only practical expansion difference is one less 3.5" external slot. THATS IT. Still 2x 5.25" bays, and 2x internal HD bays and a floppy bay.

The 4600 case also isn't the clamshell design, and I wonder if it is as effective at noise reduction, something the 4550/8250/8300 case does extremely well.

Anyone comment on a 2350/4600 case as far as sound ?

Also, I had a question about the EducatU courses that comes with the Office XP upgrade. Are these courses linked to the computer or to my account. Like if I sell the computer to a friend, would he get the courses (like if there's a link on the desktop) or would I be able to keep them? Thanx.

Sound suppression is fine. The only noise I hear from my 4600 is from the fans, but I had the same amount of noise from my 4500. The WD300BB drive that came with my 4600 was audible, but any noise from my WD SE drive is hard to detect. I've given up on having a totally quiet computer as my computer is in an enclosed area on my computer desk hutch so any sound is amplified. I could see why the hard drives could be noisy as they are pressed right up against the front of the case with only a minimal amount of metal and plastic to insulate any sound.

For Sale/Trade forum. There also is a coupon thread in the Hot Deals forum at fat wallet where numerous people are begging for codes and every now and then someone will post one. If you are interested in buying a code, just be careful not to get ripped off.
