7900 GTO 680 Core 1600 Memory
3DMark06 - 6243 (SM2.0: 2684 | HDR/SM3.0: 2588 | CPU: 1923)

Your 06'mark almost mirrors my gtx's number (see amd sig) and mine is clocked at 700/1800.

I think their site is just slow to update.

I would imagine the sudden price drop and re-labeling of some GTX stock is a direct effect of the announcement that Nvidia plans on getting DX10 ready G80 based cards out in Noveember.

And according to the stats listed in the thread about it on Dailytech one single card from the 8800 series will have more power than two 7900GTX's. It will actually be clocked slower, but the overall memory bandwith and fillrates are massively better.

So, for anyone who's waffling back and forth on whether or not they want to get a GTO or wait, maybe for you waiting is the best choice.

For me, since I plan on going a good few months after Vista releases before I bother with anything DX10 related.. these are a fine deal. And I can then trade them back to eVGA using the step-up program for a G80 based card.

Sell off your 7900GTX, should cover most of the cost for 2 of the GTO's, no fuss SLi since they're both GTO's with GTX speeds or higher. 😉

You know the Step Up is only good for 90 days, right? I wouldn't expect Vista in the next 90 days.

ATITool beta.

But, I would not do that. The memory is not fast enough and you can damage the card.

I've been seeing those impressive numbers myself. And if I were an uber gamer I would def wait. However: make sure you have 'deep pockets', because there is a much steeper PSU requirement along with that performance.

And then there is the further quandry that games still need to be made to play reasonably well on current 'inferior' tech or the sales market will be too limited.

EDIT: Just got it. In a relabeled GTX box. I called evga. Confirmed: It is def the PCB's from the old GTX's. They took the old boards they had stopped building with and manufactored them using new memory, new cooling, etc. These ARE NOT returns/refurbs. They did not remove old defective memory. They just reused blank boards and the boxes they had left over.

I hate you guys, I really hate you guys.

I have a sweet XFX 7800GT facotry OC'ed with a custom Zalman heatsink/fan combo on it. I just bought one of these after reading this thread for the past 3 days.

Hello my name is X, and its been 4 months since my last hot deal....

I'm more pathetic! I'm dumping two 7800GTs for two 7900GTOs. Combine that with the cost of the piece of jewelry I'm going to have to buy my wife to smooth the waters and you'll really know what pain is!

What do you mean they did not remove defective memory...there is defective memory on the GTOs?

"What do you mean they did not remove defective memory...there is defective memory on the GTOs? "

Read his entire paragraph over again. That's not what he meant.
eVGA builds this GTO from scratch, the ground up, blank and it did not remove old defective old memory (as some had speculated)

Mine is delivered but I can't overclock mine nor can I bench it.
Problem is I'm a distance away from it.🙁

Theoretically the 1.1ns memory can go to about 900mhz.
The GTX with 800mhz memory actually is specced at 1.2ns memory.

Damage usually occurs from overvolting, or cooling thats inadequete. Usually a component thats overclocked too high will just lock up.
Even if you decrease the lifespan by half overclocking, thats something like 10 years to 5 years, and most people will upgrade before then.
This has a pretty decent cooler, but if you are worried, make sure an additional fan is aimed at the heatsink.

Clarification since several people have been asking.

They reused the blank PCB (circuit board) from GTX cards. A PCB is just a blank circuitboard with NO components in it, no resistors, no memory, no transistors etc.

They inserted NEW memory (bolded that part of his answer), and NOT the old defective memory from some early 7900 GTXs that had issues. When he said they didn't remove old memory, he means they didn't drag out unsold defective 7900 GTX boards and pop the memory out of them and then put them on these GTO boards.

The ones for sale that people are buying are NOT refurbs (which is also independantly confirmed by a tech on the EVGA forums).

actually my question was is the GTX boards used the samsung 1.1ns that would not work at 1.1ns, and the new GTOs use the same memory, but downclocked to 1.4ns that's like having old memory on there. Anyhow do you guys think we can safely overclock to 1.2ns=~800MHz?

Just in case anyone's interested...

I bought one @ 7PM from Newegg, came in a GTX box with some GTO stickers, Wednesday afternoon. Didn't want to mess with the heatsink assembly (hoping to step-up to G80) so not sure what RAM chips are underneath, although I'm not too impressed with their contact to the heatsink. At least it looks good and the heatpipes seem pretty solid.

I took out my old X800XL which had steadily gotten better Catalyst drivers, but was getting a bit old in the tooth for the newer games and my new widescreen monitor resolution.

Not being used to a video card needing extra power, I forgot to hook it up to the PSU. At the end of installing the drivers, I got a message telling me it had lowered the clocks because of this. I thought it was a nice touch. I have an Antec Smart Power 2.0 500W PSU and hooked it up, no more problems.

I immediately noticed the sound difference; it's much quieter and has a 'better sound' to it. I did some benchmarks to test it out, my CPU (A64 3000+ midly O/C) is obviously the bottleneck and will be replaced next month. I did the coolbits registry change and fired it straight up to 700/1800. I tested it out at these speeds with Doom 3, Need for Speed 2 and the original Unreal Tournament. No problems at that speed, temperatures in the mid 50Cs. Drivers are much nicer to use than the Catalysts.

Just glad I didn't pull the trigger a week earlier on the 7950GT for more money, less power.

KMart is having a jewelry sale 😛

How did you get the memory speed up to 1800? My Nvidia control panel only lets my ram got to 1600.....

Rivatuner maybe?

Well I just got my 7900GTO installed.
Using 91.31 drivers.

I was able to overclock it to 690/1500.
Anything higher than 750 mem clock and it fails the test. I was hoping to hit 800.
I'm wondering if this is a voltage thing, or if I just got a card that can't quite make it.
Either way, I ran through 3D Mark 05 3-4 times and it didn't artifact at all.
Scored about 7800 in 1900X1200 resolution. Temps peaked in the mid 60's.

I'm happy with the results. It's almost a 7900GTX. Worth it, heck yeah. It'll give me a nice
boost from my 7800GT (which was clocked at 550/1200).

Sorry, typo, I meant 700/1600.

I'm was originally not going to overclock my cpu or gpu, but then I realized ... I have an Asus P5W-DH Deluxe. It'd be a waste to not overclock 😀

But this time, it is air cooling for me. No more watercooling business.

I'll let you know once all the parts arrive.

Got mine this afternoon, GTX box with GTO sticker on it. So far I have it running at 700/1600 without any problems with the stock cooler/bios.

Edit:
3DMark06 using Opteron 165 at 2.33Ghz
650/1320 = 5647
700/1600 = 6239
