eVGA GeForce 7900 GTO 512MB - $255 shipped from ChiefValue

This card has the same nVidia G71 GPU, the same core clock, the same Samsung 1.1ns GDDR3, the same PCB, and the same cooler as a 7900 GTX (and some even come in a GTX box with a 'GTO' sticker over the 'GTX'). It differs only in its downclocked memory (which on many cards can easily be cranked to GTX speed by overclocking or with a BIOS flash).

  • Newegg - $260 shipped
  • ChiefValue - $255 shipped
  • mwave - $250 (+) $7 to $8.50 shipping
  • ZipZoomFly - $260 shipped
  • TigerDirect - $262 shipped --or buy through Amazon to get reduced shipping

At stock it is faster than a 7900GT I believe and when put to GTX speeds it will match GTX performance. And GTX is much better than a 7900GT.
Also most of the 7900GT have 256MB and this GTO has 512MB so you get quite a performance increase with eye candy turned on.

Forget 7900GT
it beats 7950GT

Benchies
I hope your French better than mine but picts tell the story

Heck. Just pulled trigger. This one will unseat the aging 7800gt in my Dell.

a little strange benchies as for me
any way looks like x1900xt 256mb outperforms gto in many
also how come that GTO outscored x1900XT 512 in Oblivion? strage - isn't it?

p.s. looking forward to see x1950pro or whatever it will be called x1900GT on 80mn below $200 mark

The memory is pretty slow, all things considered, which is important to Nvidia's design.

It is, but considering the core is clocked the same and has the same feature set as the 7900GTX, and the RAM is the same amount and is 1.2ns as the 7900GTX, and the cooler is the same as the 7900GTX... seems to me that perhaps eVGA had extra 7900GTX PCB laying around but were short GPUs, so slapped some 7900GT GPUs on that bad boy, slowed down the RAM in the video BIOS so that it doesn't "directly" compete with the "real" 7900GTX, and dumped them on the market.

I'm in for one!

7900GT cores are identical to GTX cores.....unless the 7 cards I modded with the 1.4vcore mod were a whim. 😉

My dell 2405 is hungry for a 512mb g/c to feed its 1920x1200 pixels eating frenzy. This card may just fit the bill, will it?

DOH! By the time I finish posting stuff here and go to order, OOS. 🙁 Dang, and I wanted one also (just one, not a whole bunch to eBay) because my 7600GT in my main rig chugs a bit in FEAR here and there.

According to this ExtremeOverclocking thread (see post #7 by Dynasty), under that GTX cooler is the exact same Samsung BJ11 1.1ns GDDR3 that's on the GTX.

So if this card has a G71 cpu, and also the same cooler and mem as the GTX, then it really is a GTX, disguised only in name and by the BIOS-mediated downclock of the memory (and the whopping discount too).

Now it gets even better. Check out the 3rd post by DonTango in this MVKTech thread. He's already offering up a hacked 7900 GTO BIOS--taken from MSI's version of the card--that returns the mem clock to GTX speed. And he says no one has yet had any trouble running it at that speed, and beyond.

After reading those posts, I went back to order another--but it was too late. However, I'm sure we'll be seeing a lot more 7900 GTO's popping up at ZZF and elsewhere in the coming weeks. In fact, NCIX (from whose forum I snagged the above two links) is strangely now showing a $30 rebate for eVGA's 7900 GTO--although they aren't showing stock yet. They also list the MSI version in their catalog, but don't have that one in yet either.
