Poll added.

Seems like there were only several people that would consider becoming vegetarians from the posts. Probably 2-3 times as much(at least) that will not.

What about non posters? Vote. Lets see.

See why can't more vegetarians be more like MeanMeosh?

He presented his reasons in a clear manner with some thought behind them, and isn't out to change the world. In fact, it sounds just the opposite. He resists change. I bet he'd understand why we don't want to either. And I bet he wouldn't resort to name calling either... Thanks!

I voted, "yes I want to become one someday" Because at this point it appears i will become one, but it is hard to change.

btw, to those that were born and raised vegetarian: its so much easier for you people. Being raised on meat and THEN changing is HARD.

Humans eat meat, the high calories derived from a largely meat diet are what gave rise to our larger brains.

Animals that do not eat meat have no need for a large brain, in fact, its a liability. Human eyes are situated close together and on the front of the face rather than the sides to afford us depth perception, a trait that is only unless for carnivorous animals. An animal that does not need to hunt would be better off with eyes on the sides of the head, allowing a wider field of view.

Human teeth are not large and we don't have claws because humans do not hunt food in the tradional manner of other carnivores. Man is an entirely unique meat eating animal, in that our larger brains have resulted in no need for a strong body, fast speed, strong teeth, slashing claws or even the sense of smell. We hunt by wits alone...everything else proved a liability on energy that was cast off.

There is evidence to suggest that early hominids developed our more complex hands and then bipedalism before our large brains. It is believed that these early forms of ourselves used rocks to smash open the bones of carrion, AFTER all other predators and scavengers had picked it clean. The bone marrow inside would have afforded us enough calories to begin developing an even larger brain, allowing us to push our primative tool making abilities to new levels. At some point we aquired the ability to make fire, and from there our path was chosen. No other animal possesses the ability to harness and control fire, and with it we were quickly able to rise from the precarious position of scavenging prey to the ultimate predator. A predator whose intelligence allows it to adapt immediately to different food sources and threats. Whereas other animals have to adapt through evolution, humans can adapt through innovation.

Early on in hominid evolution there was an offshoot of animals with large morals and powerful jaws that are believed to have existed on a diet of plants. They died out early on in their existence.

Nature is brutal. She does not afford animals abilities that they do not need because they are all energy liabilities. A large brain is a massive liability on resting energy. If a species is to have a large brain, it has to use it to its advantage. Otherwise, its just a waste of calories.

IMO, to deny myself meat is to deny the fact that I'm human. Others will feel differently, saying we've "evolved beyond that". Humans have been the supreme predator on the scene for thousands and thousands of years, there has been no stimulus for us to evolve since that time. The only reason we do not have to eat meat is because we have constructed a society that affords us the choice. It wasn't always an option. If you choose not to eat meat, thats fine. But don't tell me you're a superior being because of it. We're the same animal. And we're all taking some form of life to sustain our own, that is...unless we are plants.

none of us were born vegetarians or non-vegetarians. we were all raised in a particular manner that was consistent with our upbringer's religious and cultural beliefs.

Kind of a biased poll there... anyway, I voted the taste is more important, but in reality the nutrition is probably the biggest reason. Humans have evolved to be omnivores, veg-ans/etarians are more prone to vitamin deficiencies. Plus I lift weights and getting enough protein from beans isn't an option

What kind of poll is that? You gave 3 "no" choices and 6 "yes" choices.

How about shortening it to 3 choices: Yes, No, and Maybe

How about No?

There are lots of reasons one would/would not want to be vegetarian. I want to see why.

Other than that, if you wish to add some reasons why they should not be veg., feel free to post.

Animals are just part of the food chain and humans are omnivores so, why not eat them?

They're good for you and tasty! :D

Any bullsh|t in that long post above? :p

It was an interesting post but the only thing I didnt really follow is the line about the early plant eating humans dying out. Just becasue they died out doesnt mean it was becasue of their diet or alteast you didnt offer any evidence of that.

These meat eating/vegetarian topics are always interesting but sort of a waste of time. You can have your beliefs and Ill have mine.

<I guess im the only vegetarian for moral reasons....>

So your a body builder (vegi one at that) and yet you can eat eggs and drink milk?
How can you call yourself a true vegieterian then? Your drinking milk that comes from a cow (duh) and EGGS that make a chicken (when the male chicken does his thing). But its all coming from meat animals. I would think if your a vegan you cant eat anything at all that lives. Which is kinda funny because plants do think in a way. It moves to position itself to take in more sun. Trees in the rain forest grow very tall to take in most of the sun light leavign hardly any for smaller plants and animals. They have living cells. Look at the venus flytrap. It lives off a meat diet and it is a plant. There has to be some brain there somewhere, Maybe not centralized but spread out like a lobster or crabs is.

I mean if you eat plants because they have no thought or brain why is it that they do stuff that seems to prove they do. If not they wouldnt care where the sun was pointing, would even bother to reproduce. So I guess I just dont get it.

And besides there is nothing like the taste of a good steak, ham, bacon, chicken, turkey, I would ever ever give up to eat alfafa or bean sprouts. I gots to eat my meat (perves cows chickens :p)

I'm an omnivore, and have considered becoming vegetarian in the past, and still go through periods where I eat very little meat. But reading this thread and seeing you blather on about it makes me want to have a nice juicy steak for dinner. I'm going to go to the freezer and thaw out some ribeye (from a steer that *I* raised myself and bottlefed from when he was a week or so old) and have myself a barbecue in your honor.

I voted:

No, i don't give a damn about animals.

Purely to offend the resident crybabies.

Vegetarians are silly.
