Ever Get One of Those Tickets?

Been driving for nearly 6 years (I'm on my 4th year in college). Was driving on the 5 back to Stockton from San Jose with my brother because we go to school there. I was just cruising a long with everyone else not passing a single person (Although I was in the fast lane furthest in). My brother brings flashing lights to my attention and i was gestured to pull over to the right so i had to make my way through the group of cars i was traveling with. Of course he asks me how fast I think i was going and I say like high 70s. Then he was like "You think I would pull u over for going that fast?" So I'm expecting a high number like close to 90 (to my disbelief). Then he says I was going 83 in a 70.....😕

Average speed on these freeways are always about 80. If I had slowed down to 70 I would be blocking A LOT of cars. I was even cruising a long with other cars and got picked out. Technically I was speeding but damn, ever get one of those tickets where you feel like you wished you were actually really speeding?

I've had a friend doing 9x in 65 and he wrote her off with 8x.

83 in a 70 is kind of lame, but that's why you shouldn't cruise in the left lane. I read some stat that more than 80% of highway traffic tickets are written for motorists driving in the left lane. Either way, speeding is always a calculated risk.

Agreed.

Yep the cop got you for cruising in the left lane. You never want to be unprotected on the left. I always try to get people in front and hopefully behind me if I'm going to do much over 10 mph over.

So I should go 70 and block every single person on the freeway if I want to be in the left lane?

I just go the same speed everyone else is going at (just naturally, not for fear of speeding ticket), I usually only pass in the left lane though instead of staying in it for extended periods of time.

No. 😕 Use the left lane for passing only. If you're not going faster than the people in the lane to your right, you need to move over to the right.

Nope. You said you were in a pack, and that there were several people in the right lane. Increase speed to get past them, merge back to the right, and cruise at the front. You might have to switch lanes occasionally to get past slower drivers that you overtake, but the less time you spend in the left lane, the less chance you have of getting a ticket like the one you just got.

I do the exact same thing.

What's really strange about that ticket is that I-5 usually doesn't have cops pulling people over, there isn't even enough room on the sides of the roads for the cops to park, 83 on I-5 seems very standard to me. The dickhead cop was probably meeting his quota.

I got mine for 83 in a 70. It is a risk you take if you are speeding I don't really see the problem.

I'm assuming you don't live in California, where people are tailgating you for going 80 on most freeways .

I feel like if I increased my speed to overtake the lane next to me then I would increase my chances since I would have to be going at least 90 to safely pass them... then maintain that speed to avoid pissing everyone behind me off

If everyone in the lane next to you was in the high 70s, why would you have to maintain a speed of 90 mph to avoid pissing them off? 😕

Unless traffic is heavy (which it is definitely not if you're able to go 10 over the limit), you should not be in the left lane unless you're driving faster than the people to your right and behind you.

I always go 8 over, cops don't *usually* ticket until 10+, also I tend to pay very close attention to places cops could be hiding. Haven't had a ticket since I was 16 (23 now), and that was right after I had gotten off a plane and was tired and just wanted to get home.

😕 Why would you have to maintain 90? If everyone around you is moving at around the same speed, then you speed up, merge in, drop back to the speed everyone is going, and voila, you are now out of the left lane and keeping up with traffic.

How many lanes are we talking where you were pulled over?

Cars drive in packs. The leaders of the packs, or those who are in between packs, are usually picked out as speeders. It is best to speed in the middle of the pack and if you have to pass the entire group, move into the next one as soon as possible.

Well i don't know my precise speed when I'm driving and it seemed like high 70s close to 80. But according to the cop i was doing 83 and as I stated in my OP there were cars to the right of me that were AHEAD OF ME while we were cruising meaning they were going faster.

edit: sorry in my second post i said that people were ahead of me.

No, we don't think you should be going 70 in the left lane. However, once you're out of the 70's, you're a target for someone looking to write a ticket. And, you're an even bigger target if you're the only car in the left lane. (Duhh!)

My brother got pulled over/ticketed for riding in the right lane of freeway, while cops were ticketing another person that was pulled over on the side.. Apparently it's the "emergency vehilcle" rule broken or something like that.. Basically stay the fvck away from cops 😱
