The point of the thread was to see if anyone has ever gotten pulled over for not going over the speed limit by that much (i guess it's really subjective then....). Also, I can bet a pretty penny a majority of you don't have crystal driving records either.

I figured out early on that the smartest speed is always slower than the fastest people on the road. A lot of people think that the cost is how much you pay for the speeding ticket. The actual cost includes that, but also includes the amount more you pay for insurance. Sure, your rates may stay the same (if you're lucky) - but usually, they're not going to go down either.

I'm still waiting for my court date for a ticket it got a few weeks ago. 79 in a 65 on the PA turnpike. I was holding low 70's, but I was going downhill and my speed crept up on me. I figure I'll talk to the officer before the trial and plead to 5 over with no points. Hopefully I'll get the hearing before I move in June.

I got mine for 83 in a 70. It is a risk you take if you are speeding I don't really see the problem.

I'm assuming you don't live in California, where people are tailgating you for going 80 on most freeways .

Agreed.

It's really simple people.

Drive in the rightmost lane possible.

That's it!

Southern California freeway from left to right

Carpool lane 1 - Hybrids cruising at 65 trying to beat their personal best for total mileage on a tank of gas
Carpool lane 2 - HOV Passing lane for people with real cars - 80mph
==================================== Double Yellow line
Fast lane - sets the overall pace for the freeway at 85mph, can also be used as a carpool passing lane for areas with only one HOV lane
#2 lane - Usually around 80, serves as passing lane for fastlane who can't cross double yellow line
#3 lane - 75-ish - gets crowded with people exiting the fastlane at 85 with only 1/4 mile left to go and trucks using it as n extra passing lane
#4 lane - Goody-goody lane 65-ish / Left truck lane - long haul/paid by the mile truckers 75mph.
Right truck lane - paid by the hour truckers 65mph/grandmas driving 55mph
On ramp feeder lane - Speeds vary between 35-80 mph

except you have hella ;) crazy traffic and the 2 lane freeway goes down to socal dumbass; it's not norcal only. it's just parallel to 101 and gets you from north to south or vice versa. if anything, your freeways could use some fixing. 2 lane carpool lane that EXITS randomly...wtf is that? i mean i've got respect for any part of any country i can drive in, but if you want to compare norcal to socal, you're in for a world of hurt.

i'm not sure why some of you are saying stay to the right on 5 and pass on the left...anyone that does that could use some driving school. yea, sometimes someone stubborn will come up so u pass them up on the right, but you try to stay on the right as much as possible.

also, i know many people with clean records but are HORRIBLE drivers. they either
1. haven't been caught yet
2. don't drive because they suck so much so have very little chance of getting caught

And I don't care if somebody is tailgating me, I'm not gonna go any faster because they want me to. Even in the passing lane, if I'm going 65 passing a semi that is going 55 then you guys behind me can wait your turn, won't kill you to actually do the speed limit for once ;)

Anyone see the irony in this post? Safest speed is the speed of traffic. if everyone around you is goigng 75 and you're going 55, you are creating the dangerous situation.

If there's an emergency vehicle on the shoulder, you need to get out of the right lane so the personnel on the side don't have to worry as much about getting hit by a car.

Try and do a trial by declaration, where you send the judge a letter telling your side of the case. I know two people who have beaten tickets this way.
