No, we don't think you should be going 70 in the left lane. However, once you're out of the 70's, you're a target for someone looking to write a ticket. And, you're an even bigger target if you're the only car in the left lane. (Duhh!)

Well my point was is that the ticket just felt like it was just for the sake of giving out a ticket to anyone besides obviously endangering everyone by weaving, zipping by everyone, etc. A mere 83 on those freeways is pretty normal. I feel like if I was going to be given a ticket then I might as well have been blatantly going 95 down the left lane and continuing past the rest of the mofos on the freeway.

83 in a 70 is kind of lame, but that's why you shouldn't cruise in the left lane. I read some stat that more than 80% of highway traffic tickets are written for motorists driving in the left lane. Either way, speeding is always a calculated risk.

Agreed.

So I should go 70 and block every single person on the freeway if I want to be in the left lane?

Nope. You said you were in a pack, and that there were several people in the right lane. Increase speed to get past them, merge back to the right, and cruise at the front. You might have to switch lanes occasionally to get past slower drivers that you overtake, but the less time you spend in the left lane, the less chance you have of getting a ticket like the one you just got.

I feel like if I increased my speed to overtake the lane next to me then I would increase my chances since I would have to be going at least 90 to safely pass them... then maintain that speed to avoid pissing everyone behind me off

If everyone in the lane next to you was in the high 70s, why would you have to maintain a speed of 90 mph to avoid pissing them off?

Unless traffic is heavy (which it is definitely not if you're able to go 10 over the limit), you should not be in the left lane unless you're driving faster than the people to your right and behind you.

Well i don't know my precise speed when I'm driving and it seemed like high 70s close to 80. But according to the cop i was doing 83 and as I stated in my OP there were cars to the right of me that were AHEAD OF ME while we were cruising meaning they were going faster.

edit: sorry in my second post i said that people were ahead of me.

If there were people to the right of you going faster than you, you should not have been in the left lane! Don't you have to pass some kind of test to get a license in California? How the hell do you not know this?

Well it's usuallly 80 in the left lane (people don't use it just for passing either here). It's not my fault some people in california like to go 90 and up to feel like they're saving 5 seconds...i figured i'd let them get busted...instead I did for going 83....

Newsflash: If there are enough people going 95 down the left lane, then you're not going to have to worry about getting a ticket for going 83 in a 70. BUT, assuming you weren't being passed 2 or 3 times a minute by people going 95, you managed to single yourself out as being the speeder on the road.

I got a 92 in a 70 a few years ago.. but I felt lucky because I had been going over 100.

Yes, young and stupid blah blah blah.. I learned my lesson.

 That doesn't change his point. If you're not passing anyone on a regular basis, get out of the left lane. There is no point to staying in the left lane if you are cruising and everyone is in front of you. You're more likely to get a ticket in the left lane.

Doesn't anybody drive in the right lane (when they're not passing) anymore?

My first (and only) ticket was a similar situation. 4th year college student heading back to school on I-80 and I got pulled over for 81 in a 65. Yeah yeah, obviously speeding, but it's I-80.. driving 65 is virtually non-existent, 76-80 is pretty much the norm, I figure if I were a few mph slower I woulda been fine, but oh well. If anything, I wish they'd just raise the speed limit for that section of I-80.

Easiest way to not get a ticket: Don't break the law and speed. Works like a charm ;)

And I don't care if somebody is tailgating me, I'm not gonna go any faster because they want me to. Even in the passing lane, if I'm going 65 passing a semi that is going 55 then you guys behind me can wait your turn, won't kill you to actually do the speed limit for once ;)

Unfortunately, no.

You got pulled over for being one of the many jack asses who cruises in the left lane. I-5 is a two lane freeway, you cruise in the right and pass in the left. Seems like no one on the 5 understand this anymore.

Because usually people do cruise in the left lane going 80ish(groups of people). People don't simply just go to the left lane just to pass (on some occasions people are doing 70 in that lane but that's something else). Then some people will be pissed because ur only doing 80 and attempt to pass u on the right lane in which they begin to realize u weren't going all that slow to begin with because they're not zipping past u. It's a normal thing. So I'm not going to jump over when there are cars next to me just so the hot head behind me can do 95 when I'm going at a decent speed (relative to everyone else). No I'm not neck and neck at the same speed as everyone else, and I'm also not zipping past them but i was warranted to be in the left lane to slowly past those doing 73-75ish when most of everyone else was doing high 70s and 80.

Where do you have semi's doing 55? All the semi's I see on the way to and from school are doing 70-75 minimum. Must be nice not to have truckers flying all over the road.

Ohio. Half of them do 55, a quarter 60-ish or so, the rest anywhere between 65 and 100 :p
Their speed limit is technically 55.

That's what I was wondering. Sounds like the cop busted you for not knowing how to drive.

NEVER let other cars pass you on the right. If that happens, then move over immediately, or as soon as possible. You don't sit there in the left lane running whatever speed you feel like, while everyone else passes you on the right.

The left lane on highways everywhere, is for the faster cars. And driving in the left lane gets you noticed by the police.

So pass on the left, then get back to the right until you need to pass again.

I'm driving more these days (have an hour commute each way to school and a half hour commute to work each way, so 3 hours driving/day, 5 days a week) and the lack of common courtesy and safe driving practices on the road is atrocious.

Simply put, the whole system is fvcked.

Problem is sometimes I've passed a truck and those guys behind me couldn't wait for me to move over so they cut in front of the truck and next thing I know I'm stuck in the left lane waiting for the guys to clear out of the right so I can get back to the right lane.

That, and the college kids around the university I go to seem to think it is "cool" to race around the highway weaving in and out of traffic cutting everyone off. A couple have learned their lesson hopefully after they got in a big wreck and shut down the highway for several hours.

lol people weren't passing me on the right...alright i was doing a decent speed passing the people doing 70 (which is typically slow for our highways).

also, he didn't tell me to get out of the right lane. he even told me if i had slowed down a little bit then i'd be fine (kind of whack when people are usually doing 80 anyways).

I love all these left lane comments from people OUT OF CALIFORNIA. I've never been bothered by the police (and i've run into them on the freeway :p) once. The first time i've been pulled over it's for doing 83 when you'd get horned to death by nearly everyone (im not kidding either) for going the speed limit. I've seen other states on the east coast and i admit they are more reserved then ours and i see where you guys are coming from, but here it's different, and I'm not trying to make california seem better. I'm just telling how it is.

Well, you'll have that occasionally, but the OP admits he was just hogging the left lane, and allowing cars to pass him on the right.
He should have been smacked upside the head instead of given a ticket. ;)

Here in Kahleeforneeya, trucks (with more than 2 axles) or ANY vehicle with a trailer are limited to 55 MPH...not that most of them pay anymore attention to the speed limits than the rest of us do, but...it IS the law, just like 65 or 70 is...They are also required BY LAW to use the right lane (when there are 2 lanes each direction) except to pass, then move back to the right. When there are 3 or more lanes, they are allowed to drive in the 2 right lanes ONLY. (with a few posted exceptions)

OP, not sure where you got the ticket, but ALL of 580 is considered a high enforcement area, as is 205, and MUCH of I-5. There was an article in the Modesto Bee a couple of years back, where the typical speeding ticket on I-5 is now 105 MPH...of course, that includes all the empty space between Manteca and Bakersfield, where there's nothing but trucks, a handful of small towns, and lots of CHP...

Alright i guess this discussion has reached it's peak since next thing i know i was blocking the left lane while everyone was zipping past me, bumping my hip hop musak, with my loud tin can exhaust, on a two lane highway, before the cops pulled me over. :)
