I've done it for years, and my bank has it show up in my account immediately. I think for large ammounts they hold it to verify funds though.

I always had this distrust for it...

How is handing a teller a check and feeding it into an ATM any different? At the end of the day they all go in the same place.

Just sign the check, enter the amount into the ATM and feed the check into it. Much faster than filling out a form, waiting in line, etc.

I don't think it takes any time. If I have nothing in my account, deposit a cheque, I can take the money out right away.

It is instantaneous at my bank, in fact I can deposit just a net amount if I want a part of the cheque right away. So if I have a $100 cheque I can get $40 in cash and have the $60 balance credited to my account. I only get charged one transaction this way.

I am talking about instead of driving to deposit checks its a lot easier to just deposit all your checks online without any of the traffic hassle, wasted gas, and time. The funds are instantly there as well after depositing any checks online.

I do it every now and then, never had any problems with it. With Wells Fargo the funds are usually deposited the next business day, the second at the latest.

It's all I ever do. I deposit cash also (try not to do more than $600 cash at a time though). I use Keybank and never had a problem. It's usually pretty fast too.

I did however have problems with US bank before. I deposited like $300 and instead of $300 they deposited it as $30! Took weeks and weeks for them to get it fixed (I think it was like 6 weeks!). Horrible customer service too. Practicly had to hold someone at gun point to get service. I complained to the BBB and they changed their tune a bit though. And they wouldn't compensate me for over drafting or anything. I hate US bank with a passion. I was young and that was money I needed to live off of. They didn't care though, they just considered me the liar until they casually got around to fixing it. They could have just looked at the check and seen it was for $300 and given me the money until the entire thing finished whatever other processes it needed to go through.

Thats also back when they had that big scandle where they would hold funds until you bounced something that was also pending (even if the debit was done after the deposit). They'd put all the debits through first and hold your money. Or they would just hold your money for a week. So lets say you made a deposit... then you sent in a check for a bill. Well a week later when that bills went through then they would decide to deposit your money but only AFTER the new debits and they charged you $28 per transaction for overdrafting. So you could wrack up hundreds of dollars of fees for not doing anything wrong. Basicly if you didn't have plenty of buffer money in the account and a week or two buffer between deposits and new debits you were screwed.

No one believed me when I said this scam was happening. I was laughted at. Unitl there was a huge government investigation and US Bank got in a lot of trouble. Well not nearly as much as they should have. Slap on the wrist really. Which is sad when you think how much money they defrauded from millions of customers.

Anyway I guess I'm saying.... it should be fine but if for some reason if something does go wrong stay away from US Bank. Because they will screw you :D

There are plenty that do this. The future is this! You just have to find them.

Well some right now, but very few that I know of, let you scan the check to them. Most right now only let you send them the check. The beauty is the funds are their instantly even before you send the check so no waiting!

Heres one credit union that does it and there are plenty more!

Almost totally useless for me. I work downtown in the financial centre of the city I live in and walk by several banks on the way to and from work everyday.

Scanning the cheque, addressing an envelope , stamping it, and mailing seems like a way bigger hassle to me.

You don't have to scan the check.

If your bank lets you scan the check then their is no mail to send. They deposit the amounrtt from the check copy scan alone. Then you can throw away the check after a few days.

yes, all the time. i get like $100 or $200 credited immediately. the rest is credited to my overall balance for interest but not available for withdrawal for a couple days. this is no different than depositing it in person.
