final update ... i installed my IDE drive and SATA burner again ... reset to optimized defaults [and then tweaked for my system] ... and everything "works" again
-- everything ... My optical drives now show up correctly in the right order with my HDs

i have this currently in BIOS
That's great to hear!

i am *guessing* that i cannot get ideal ACHI/RAID with my IDE HD/burner set up
-- here are my current settings:

SATA RAID/ACHI Mode [DISabled] <- would like 'enabled'
SATA Port0-3 Native Mode [Enabled]
Onboard SATA/IDE Device [Enabled]
Onboard SATA/IDE Ctrl Mode [DISabled] <- would like 'ACHI'

i am going to start over with RAID ,,,

^comments?^

Let's just go over everything from the beginning of SATA BIOS config. to Windows driver installation:

1. Did you reset DMI when you originally flashed the main BIOS?

There was no option for that

2. Failing that, is there an option to redetect IDE/SATA devices?

Yes, 'load optimized defaults' seems to do that

3. Finally, there are two different SATA controllers on your board:

http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Pro...ge.aspx?ProductID=2639

One set is orange:

Intel ICH9R
SATA RAID/ACHI Mode [DISabled] <- would like 'enabled'
SATA Port0-3 Native Mode [Enabled]

Here, option #1 cannot be set to ENabled because there is no such setting; it's either AHCI or RAID:

Correct, i they are for my HDs. But it *must be* DISabled now. The other SATA connection [there are several] is for my SATA DVD-RW

Excert from the BIOS Manual

Enables or disables RAID for the SATA controllers integrated in the Intel ICH9R Southbridge.
-- Disabled Configures the SATA controllers to PATA mode. (Default)
-- AHCI Configures the SATA controllers to AHCI mode. Advanced Host Controller
Interface (AHCI) is an interface specification that allows the storage driver to
enable advanced Serial ATA features such as Native Command Queuing and
hot plug. For more information about AHCI, please visit Intel's website.
-- RAID Enables RAID for the SATA controllers.
So you just have to pick one...depending on whether you have RAID HDDs on this controller. If you pick RAID, then, from what I can tell, you cannot get AHCI mode working on these ports.

One set is purple:

Gigabyte SATA2
Onboard SATA/IDE Device [Enabled]
Onboard SATA/IDE Ctrl Mode [DISabled] <- would like 'ACHI'

Again, option #2 cannot be set to ENabled because there is no such setting; it's either AHCI or RAID:

it's either AHCI or RAID ---OR - DISabled ... mine has to be disabled
Excert from the BIOS Manual

Enables or disables RAID for the SATA controller integrated in the GIGABYTE SATA 2 chip.
-- IDE Configures the SATA controller to PATA mode. (Default)
-- AHCI Configures the SATA controller to AHCI mode. Advanced Host Controller
Interface (AHCI) is an interface specification that allows the storage driver to
enable advanced Serial ATA features such as Native Command Queuing and
hot plug. For more information about AHCI, please visit Intel's website.
-- RAID/IDE Enables RAID for the SATA controller. (The IDE controller still operates in PATA
mode)

Is this the setting where AHCI causes a problem? i.e. on the purple ports, with the SATA burner?
[/quote]

i can't enable RAID or ACHI on ANY port - - only "Onboard SATA/IDE Device [Enabled]"

So...to which ports are your devices attached?

Orange
Intel ICH9R-01 -->
Intel ICH9R-02 -->
Intel ICH9R-03 -->
Intel ICH9R-04 -->
Intel ICH9R-05 -->
Intel ICH9R-06 -->
[/quote]
^ i Don't remember - i have only *1* SATA DVD-RW on a orange port. But the new installations of Vista and XP on the IDE drive recognize it and the RAIDED partitons just fine [otoh, the RAIDed drive is still screwed up - that drive cannot recognize the SATA DVD-RW nor will it burn DVDs very well. So it's about to be blown away and reinstalled - hopefully with the higher performance ACHI settings.
Purple
Gigabyte SATA2-01 -->
Gigabyte SATA2-02 -->
The RAIDed HDs are on the Purple

Obviously, you do not want to move the RAID HDDs to different ports, but how about trying different ports for your SATA burner?

they are both recognized now.

Can you configure one set of SATA ports to AHCI and the other to RAID?

Actually that is my question ... actually i will *remove* all my IDE devices and try again - after i backup

4. Do you have the proper drivers installed in Windows?

Yes. Those drivers are ALWAYS on the MB driver DVD. For example, when i freshly installed Vista - and before i installed them - Vista could not recognize my Raided HDs nor my SATA DVD-RW. After installation, everything is fine. i *know* my RAIDed HD has issues - it became unstable after the power failure and my IDE drive vanished - that is WHEN the problems started.

Both controllers require different drivers off the Gigabyte website:

Intel INF Installation (ICH9R --> all modes)
Intel ICH9R SATA RAID Driver (ICH9R --> RAID mode)
GIGABYTE SATA2 RAID Driver (Gigabyte SATA2 --> RAID mode ???)

I'm not sure if the third driver set is required in AHCI mode...?[/quote]

All the above drivers are on the Gigabye MB DVD. i update to the latest off the website. thanks and i am still working on it ... the IDE Vista/XP installations for backup are perfect and i have everything - except Steam - fully backed up. As soon as i am done, i will remove my IDE devices and set up everything up as SATA
[after i am done with the testing, i can return my IDE HD to back-up duties]

Does that sound like a "plan"?

:)

thanks for your help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK...I just gave up trying to wrap my head around the nested quotes.

I'm glad it's working fine for you. I would reinstall with the AHCI enabled because I can't imagine how Vista could miss the SATA drive during setup. XP on the other hand...you will need the SATA/RAID drivers on floppies before you start, or the setup process will fail (especially on an ICH9-based board).

But there ARE issues when enabling AHCI after Windows Setup has completed.

You might want to run through this again before reinstalling on your RAIDed drives:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AHCI

Oddly enough, it appears that you CAN get RAID and AHCI working simultaneously on the same Intel SATA controller. The BIOS options are somewhat misleading: you just choose the RAID mode (which implies AHCI also).

Many SATA controllers can enable AHCI either separately or in conjunction with RAID support. Intel recommends choosing RAID mode on their motherboards (which also enables AHCI) rather than the plain AHCI/SATA mode for maximum flexibility, due to the issues caused when the mode is switched once an operating system has already been installed.

thanks for staying with me thru this ... it IS confusing ... i remember setting it up in May; and i still believe i had it right ... everything worked fine and the performance was right in line for similar rig's benches. i guess that power failure 'reset' something. i did lose data and everything was downhill from that point on [although it isn't obvious except looking back].

Anyway, i am setting it all up again tonight - my back-up is nearly finished. It's not a full HD image back-up - there is a LOT of crap i do not want to save ... so it is folder by folder ... 150+ GB of folder-by-folder ... and it took longer than all night. i will let you know what happens when i remove my IDE components and start over with only SATA drives.
