No ... dang nabit ... *Still* not right :p

OK, loading optimized defaults ends the error messages [Device #1F ... Function #02 ... 06 Port ... no BIOS] but of course will not load the OS until i enable 'Onboard SATA/IDE control mode' leaving ACHI or RAID "disabled".

and now there are no error messages - instead it shows the PCIe to SATA BIOS is now installed ....

BUT i still get no CD-ROM in DOS and the error message: "**Error: No CD-ROM drivers found" even though i boot from the DVD; Vista still refuses to format or burn a disk
wth?

and changing to ACHI or RAID mode brings back the error message regarding Device #1F ... Function #02 ... 06 Port and no SATA BIOS installed :p
- huh?

Just for fun, i am going to try an install my SATA burner .... in the meantime, i would appreciate some insight.

i don't think you guys *can* figure it out :p
[either]

just for kicks, i installed my SATA DVD Writer ... it is not recognized in BIOS or in Vista [although there are no error messages]
- but it workd *fine* in XP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WtF?

i don't think i care ... the *only thing* i can figure is to blow away *all* my OS installations and start over. . . .
--fat chance of that ... i don't think i *need* to set up Win 98 anymore

And this is *nothing* compared to the crap i am having with AT&T's tech support setting up my Pantech cell phone as Dial-up networking for my rig with a bluetooth adapter .. after 3 continuous hours with their highest level of (data) Support [3rd night-in-a-row] they are sending me to Pantech TS to start all over again tomorrow AM. :|
-it's that or back to dialup

Apoppin - I have little to no idea of what your current problem is you're trying to troubleshoot, and so that makes helping very difficult. Concise, simple responses, complete with MPSReports logs showing the exact problem, would be very helpful if you wish to troubleshoot this.

Simplest might be for you to take a new hard drive and install the OSs onto that, just to confirm this is software-related and not hardware-related.

I still think the BIOS is/was infected and maybe it's spread. why are you using a cellphone for access?

Interesting. What do you think it's infected with?

i have no idea exactly what it is either nor do it think it is "solvable" - except by deleting my RAID installation and starting ALL over.:p

i *guess* my controller uninstalled during a power outage ... i got it back by resetting my defaults after a bios flash. However, i *probably* messed up - originally - by probably not setting my ACHI or RAID up correctly with a missed setting in BIOS- in the beginning when i built my rig. i really doubt it is HW related.
--Let this be a lesson to me. :p

AND ... yes, i believe it will take installation of a brand new HD to confirm it ... unless you want me to follow some exact steps you have in mind complete with report logging with my current system.

Highly doubtful ... an infection would create continuing damage. This is more like my goof-up installing my OSes with a miss-set BIOS switch ... there a lot of similar reports as detailed here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A...t_Controller_Interface

why connect with my cell phone? because 75-125kpbs from the AT&T edge network is at least 20 times faster then my current solution - 4 or 5 kpbs on DIAL-UP
:D
it's $39 a month for fast tethered access or $6.95 a month for slow
- no *other* choice [unless you count satellite]

Can you clearly and simply state what the current problem is? Your posts are difficult to parse sometimes, and I don't have a clear picture of exactly what's wrong. You want to do what, with what?

First of all, thank-you for your interest.

OK, loading optimized defaults ended the error messages - regarding Device #1F ... Function #02 ... 06 Port ... no BIOS - but of course will not load the OS until i enable 'Onboard SATA/IDE control mode' leaving ACHI or RAID "disabled". So now there are no error messages - instead it shows the PCIe to SATA BIOS is now installed [ok, so far?]

BUT i still get no CD-ROM in DOS and the error message: "**Error: No CD-ROM drivers found" even though i boot from the DVD from the IDE burner. If i change BIOS to ACHI or RAID mode, it backs the error message regarding Device #1F ... Function #02 ... 06 Port and no SATA BIOS installed. So it is left "disabled".

My current problem is that there is no CD-ROM showing up when i boot into a pure DOS environment. i have 2 two DVD-drives; one is on IDE [by itself] and last night i installed a Philips SATA burner. The SATA burner also does not show up when i boot into DOS nor will it recognize a boot up DVD like Vista install.

Now my SATA burner does not show up in Vista - there is nothing in Device Mgr - but my IDE burner does. OTOH, both burners are recognized and function perfectly in XP

Typically GB says you should leave the AHCI / RAID bits turned off for controllers controlling CDROM devices.
I can't get excited about DOS - that's strictly an issue of the drivers you're using in DOS, and nobody updates drivers in DOS anymore.
Booting from SATA CD is a BIOS issue, and it sounds like your BIOS boot order just needs to be changed.
Works in XP, so let's look at Vista. What are the filter drivers you found in Vista and XP, back when I asked you to do so on 1/14 timeframe?

OK ... thanks ... and i thought so about the pure DOS environments > but then i will never set up Win98 SE on this rig - so it is no disadvantage. That was my original concern.

As to the Filters ... i *need* to be first at Pantech tech Support ... i will post These filters this afternoon

and again, thanks!

EDIT: Just to be sure .... here are my relevant BIOS settings:

SATA RAID/ACHI Mode [Disabled]('Enabled' bring up the error message)
SATA Port0-3 Native Mode [Disabled] (didn't matter)
Onboard SATA/IDE Device [Enabled]
Onboard SATA/IDE Ctrl Mode [IDE/RAID]

^From memory^

OK ... Pantech TS is closed - even though their even though their recorded message says they *should* be open on the weekends ... so i am heading over to AT&T and Pantech support forums ... as well as posting on our own networking:

http://forums.anandtech.com/me...144147&highlight_key=y

in the meantime, i have regedit open ... and some questions for you dclive

First of all i have 3 folders named - 4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318. The first one - has *two* Control sets - 0001 and 0002

0001 and 0002 are identical and contain the additional info:
DriverDateData REG_BINARY 00 80 8c a3 c5 94 c6 01
DriverVersion: 6.0.6000.16386

everything is of the type REG_SZ [except REG_MULTI_SZ for the Icon Path: %SystemRoot%System32.imageres.dll-30]
They are DVD/CDROM drives by 'default' and their 'class' is CDROM
Class Description is: @%SystemRoot%\System32\StorProp.dll,-17001
EnumPropPages: storprop.dll,DvdPropPageProvider
Installer32: storprop.dll,DvdClassInstaller
NoInstallClass and SilentInstall are 1

the other 2 identically named folders have "computer" amnd "disk drives" respectively

Please read through the web page directions again - you need to go to current control set, and let me know the filters values.

what did i miss? i have no "CURRENT" control set .. just control set?

To resolve this, open up RegEdt32 and navigate to My Computer - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - System - CurrentControlSet - Control - Class - 4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318 and view the contents of the ?folder? - you should see, on the right side, Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values.

oops :

i refreshed it and there it was

give me a minute

same thing .... same info as noted in my earlier post:p

exactly what are you looking for?

the CDROM i described in 'control' has the same info as in 'Current Controls'
-and i cannot open "properties" - i get an error if i try to open it.

Sub Folders 0001 and 0002 are identical and contain the additional info:
DriverDateData REG_BINARY 00 80 8c a3 c5 94 c6 01
DriverVersion: 6.0.6000.16386

in the folder you specified, everything is of the type REG_SZ [except REG_MULTI_SZ for the Icon Path: %SystemRoot%System32.imageres.dll-30]
They are DVD/CDROM drives by 'default' and their 'class' is CDROM
Class Description is: @%SystemRoot%\System32\StorProp.dll,-17001
EnumPropPages: storprop.dll,DvdPropPageProvider
Installer32: storprop.dll,DvdClassInstaller
NoInstallClass and SilentInstall are 1

there is nothing else in the folder [that i can see]

EDIT>>> this is no doubt for the IDE DVD writer under Vista ... it DOES work

but there is no entry for the SATA burner ... which is recognized and works fine in XP ;)

I'm not sure where the problem is, but I was able to open Regedt32 in Vista and navigate to the information I need. I need the upperfilter and lowerfilter values for your CD-DVD ROM drives, found in the registry location I mentioned, if present. It seems you've got the information, but you're saying there is no upper and lower filter values. What are you talking about re: " the CDROM i described in 'control' has the same info as in 'Current Controls'
-and i cannot open "properties" - i get an error if i try to open it. " --- what does that mean? I'm asking you to go to a specific portion of your registry and tell me the upper and lower filter values. Please confirm UpperFilter and LowerFilter values do not (or do) exist in the "Computer - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - System - CurrentControlSet - Control - Class - 4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318 " location.

All of this is clearly spelled out on the web page - I'm confused at what part you find unclear.

No worries on properties item under the main key; we don't need it; I just wanted to find out if / what apoppin had for upper/lower filters. Your screenshots illustrate this wonderfully; thank you.

i know ... when i navigate to *exactly* where you described and open 4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318 ... the *only* thing i have are 3 sub-folders named 0000 and 0001 and Properties

If i try to access "properties", i get an error message that "access is denied"

0000 and 0001 contain identical info:

DriverDateData REG_BINARY 00 80 8c a3 c5 94 c6 01

i cannot *handle* the idea of anything being wrong with my rig. i am 90% sure i set up everything in BIOS correctly last May but that aforementioned Power failure and UPS failure probably messed it up.

So .. i am starting over - full backup to my IDE HD and then blow away RAID, all my OSes and Partitions and start over

i just want to be *sure* that these are the correct BIOS setting for my Rig with 2 x 250GB Seagate 'cuda SATA in RAID-0 & WD 120.0 GB on IDE. If my SATA burner is OK, i will use it and not use my IDE burner.

Is the following correct to optimize performance for my HW?

SATA RAID/ACHI Mode [Enabled]
SATA Port0-3 Native Mode [Enabled]
Onboard SATA/IDE Device [Enabled]
Onboard SATA/IDE Ctrl Mode [IDE/RAID]

right?

and i also need to set HPET to 64-bit for Vista 64 and to 32-bit for XP and Vista32 ... correct?

and of course the installation order is XP > Vista32 > Vista 64

i will be back to [ab]normal by next weekend ... Big Mahalo and Thank-you! for all your help!!

!!

Yes .. some of us are benchmarking for the video forum to prove or disprove a hot topic whether there is a practical performance advantage of a 64-bit Vista in a 4 GB gaming rig over 32-bit Vista when 99.99+% of all games are 32-bit.

Vista32- vs. Vista64-bit OS Showdown / 4GB Gaming rig's performance compared

so of course, i want *everything perfect*
- and i was just reminded that i need to install Vista64 with only 2GB of System RAM - then add the other 2GB after
-i thought they fixed it :p

i don't know for sure ... my MB now has a "Dual BIOS" whereas before it was just a backup - the manual doesn't even mention anything about "dual"

at any rate, i had problems installing Vista64 from a copied DVD so i am asking MS to send me the upgrade [to Ultimate, i guess :p]

it stopped the instillation with an error message ... but why explore it now?
-- i am determined to just start over ... after backing everything up to my IDE HD. Then i will be certain.

final update ... i installed my IDE drive and SATA burner again ... reset to optimized defaults [and then tweaked for my system] ... and everything "works" again

i have this currently in BIOS

i am *guessing* that i cannot get ideal ACHI/RAID with my IDE HD/burner set up

SATA RAID/ACHI Mode [DISabled] <- would like 'enabled'
SATA Port0-3 Native Mode [Enabled]
Onboard SATA/IDE Device [Enabled]
Onboard SATA/IDE Ctrl Mode [DISabled] <- would like 'ACHI'

i am going to start over with RAID ,,,

That's great to hear!

Let's just go over everything from the beginning of SATA BIOS config. to Windows driver installation:

1. Did you reset DMI when you originally flashed the main BIOS?

2. Failing that, is there an option to redetect IDE/SATA devices?

3. Finally, there are two different SATA controllers on your board:

http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Pro...ge.aspx?ProductID=2639

One set is orange:

Intel ICH9R
SATA RAID/ACHI Mode [DISabled] <- would like 'enabled'
SATA Port0-3 Native Mode [Enabled]

Here, option #1 cannot be set to ENabled because there is no such setting; it's either AHCI or RAID:

Excert from the BIOS Manual

Enables or disables RAID for the SATA controllers integrated in the Intel ICH9R Southbridge.
-- Disabled Configures the SATA controllers to PATA mode. (Default)
-- AHCI Configures the SATA controllers to AHCI mode. Advanced Host Controller
Interface (AHCI) is an interface specification that allows the storage driver to
enable advanced Serial ATA features such as Native Command Queuing and
hot plug. For more information about AHCI, please visit Intel's website.
-- RAID Enables RAID for the SATA controllers.
So you just have to pick one...depending on whether you have RAID HDDs on this controller. If you pick RAID, then, from what I can tell, you cannot get AHCI mode working on these ports.

One set is purple:

Gigabyte SATA2
Onboard SATA/IDE Device [Enabled]
Onboard SATA/IDE Ctrl Mode [DISabled] <- would like 'ACHI'

Again, option #2 cannot be set to ENabled because there is no such setting; it's either AHCI or RAID:

Excert from the BIOS Manual

Enables or disables RAID for the SATA controller integrated in the GIGABYTE SATA 2 chip.
-- IDE Configures the SATA controller to PATA mode. (Default)
-- AHCI Configures the SATA controller to AHCI mode. Advanced Host Controller
Interface (AHCI) is an interface specification that allows the storage driver to
enable advanced Serial ATA features such as Native Command Queuing and
hot plug. For more information about AHCI, please visit Intel's website.
-- RAID/IDE Enables RAID for the SATA controller. (The IDE controller still operates in PATA
mode)

Is this the setting where AHCI causes a problem? i.e. on the purple ports, with the SATA burner?

So...to which ports are your devices attached?

Orange
Intel ICH9R-01 -->
Intel ICH9R-02 -->
Intel ICH9R-03 -->
Intel ICH9R-04 -->
Intel ICH9R-05 -->
Intel ICH9R-06 -->

Purple
Gigabyte SATA2-01 -->
Gigabyte SATA2-02 -->

Obviously, you do not want to move the RAID HDDs to different ports, but how about trying different ports for your SATA burner?

Can you configure one set of SATA ports to AHCI and the other to RAID?

4. Do you have the proper drivers installed in Windows?

Both controllers require different drivers off the Gigabyte website:

Intel INF Installation (ICH9R --> all modes)
Intel ICH9R SATA RAID Driver (ICH9R --> RAID mode)
GIGABYTE SATA2 RAID Driver (Gigabyte SATA2 --> RAID mode ???)

I'm not sure if the third driver set is required in AHCI mode...?
