Ergonomic chair, office chair, gaming chair?

I use an office chair to use my desktop PC at home. However, I wonder whether this would be the best and most comfortable option, especially to avoid pain in the back. This is my current chair:

I wonder whether I should consider buying something else. I have read that gaming chairs are comfortable and appropriate for spending long hours in front of a computer. They are also very colorful, which is not very good as they may not go well with the rest of the furniture.

There are also some ergonomic chairs which I have seen and which are more subtle. I have read somewhere that gaming chairs are ergonomic, and other sources say that gaming and office chairs are not ergonomic at all, and that I should consider buying something more specific.

I need some advice. Should I keep my current chair as it is ergonomic (I do not think so, though)? Is a gaming chair as good as any other ergonomic chair, just more colorful? What should I pay attention to when buying a chair?

i've never tried a gaming chair but have sat in a number of office desk chairs.

my favorite are the steelcase amia and leap models. liked the amia so much at work i bought one for home.

a lot of people like herman miller office chairs too (the aeron model is very popular) but i've never been a fan. hard plastic rim around the seat hurts my legs.

it'd probably be best for you to go to an office supply store and try some different models out.

Herman Miller seems nice, but it is very expensive here in Brazil (as everything else). A Herman Miller Aeron will cost about USD 2,000.

I have seen some gaming chairs and I would like your opinion on them. They are not wide available here in Brazil, but I found these models: the AKRacing Premium V2, the AKRacing Wolf , the AKRacing Nitro, the Vertagear PL6000, the Vertagear SL4000, the Vertagear SL2000. Price range between USD 350 and USD 600, much more affordable.

Any of these worth taking a look?

Having just been down this road recently I'd highly suggest trying to sit in any chair you are considering before buying. The leap is highly recommend by people but when I finally managed to try one I realized it wasn't the chair for me.

How about a Herman Miller chair?

This, the last chair anyone should buy, an Aeron. Get one refurbed and the price is reasonable, and it'll probably outlast you if you aren't towing it behind a car.

I sit in one for ~7h a day at work (not including random breaks), come home, and sit in another for another ~5h, feeling great the whole time.

I'm stuck with an Aeron at work. It is simply the worst, most un-ergonomic chair I have ever been afflicted with. My legs are constantly falling asleep due to the seat design. About half my coworkers switched to standing desks since we bought the Aerons.

I am just going to throw this out there, but on the off chance you're not a small person like myself, I bought a Driscott Mesh Big and Tall Chair about a year ago and it's REALLY comfortable. Just figured I'd throw out another option that may not run you into the thousands...

In 1998 I went to a salvage yard and bought two leather driver's seats from a wrecked car of the same model. With a little welding and modifications, and using the roller base from a desk chair, I made my own. For me it is better than anything out on the market I have tried. If you have any fabrication skills, you might give this idea a try.

GM made the best seats back then and the Buicks had the best of the best, even better than the great seats in my Olds.

If you're located in Brazil you'll likely have some difficulty finding the chairs mentioned here, which are also quite expensive, high end chairs.

Really, all you need is to find a chair that has adjustable armrests, adjustable seat height, adjustable lumbar/back support, and is tall enough to fully support your back. Depending on your leg length, you may also need to check to make sure it doesn't hit the back of your knees when seated. If you can find a chair that does all of that, you can fit the chair to you and be ergonomic - although it may not last as long as some of the chairs mentioned above.

More than just the chair, you also need to make sure your monitors, keyboard, and mouse are also positioned correctly for ergonomics. There is tons of information online about ergonomics and I suggest reading and then trying things out in stores.

yep, aerons suck. i have no idea how they became so popular.

steelcase is much, MUCH better.

I have used a Steelcase Think at work and Leap at home for 5+ years. Certainly better than the clearance chairs I used to buy at Staples, but I have had to add cushioning to the seat and additional lumbar support padding. Definitely give whatever chair you are looking at an extended sit before buying.

it's a lumbar support chair, made for people who suffer pain from sitting down too long.

i've had this both with IBM and now with Barclays, there's only a few of them as the tag price is over $1000, and so they assign them to people who have been there for years and have developed "office back" but when i can i always use them and there is just no comparison to any other chair i have ever tried, from dad's ol' wood & straw chair, to leather chairs, gaming chairs, other ergo chairs, classic office chair, plastic chair, this thing is: 1. super comfy 2. solidly planted and will not topple even if you are a fat bastard and you do the macarena 3. indestructible, and bonus 4. does not make you sweat.

I tried the Aeron and a Embody disliked them both.

Now have a Steelcase Gesture which I love!

I had the bottom of the seat coming apart a few months ago. Contacted Steelcase they first wanted to make sure my chair was bought from a authorized retailer. Understandable. I gave them a picture of the label under the chair. Then they contacted me back and said they would have someone come out and replace the whole seat for free! Sadly they had no one in my area close by to do that. So another option was for them to send me a whole new seat and for me to install it. I didn't feel comfortable with that so declined. So they came up with a third idea which was awesome! They were going to send me a whole new chair and for me to send back the old one! Sure enough a week later I got a new chair. Then shipped back the old one!
