My point is, most people here jump on the hatewagon and talk out their ass.

So. . . where are you when ATers come out in hordes and talk out of their asses about ricers and the import car scene?

Here it is, just as you asked. First hand, actual owner experience. VW is the biggest POS I've ever owned, and I owned me some POS's in the past. 85 Omni and 96 Accent come to mind, but 2000 VW Golf I had takes the cake.

I have owned many pre 1970 VW's. They have their problems, but if you have a little mechanical knowledge, they are easy to take care of. I miss them so much, I am gonna buy a 63 bug in a few weeks. It's a love, hate relationship!!

Do the opinions of siblings count?

My sister's 93 Jetta had nothing but problems. They must have replaced everything at least once in that engine. The funniest thing to fall apart on it was the door lock. The driver's side door stopped working and she would have to get in through the passenger side. The best thing to fall apart was the speed/odo meter. She must have driven 50K miles on it with it broken. Nothing on that car worked. It was a disaster from the start. Eventually it committed suicide by catching fire one day and self-immolating itself. I never saw this happen but that is what she told me.

I think VWs are great fun to drive but they are unreliable. I had an 86 GTi (in 88) and it was nothing but problems. When it ran, it was a blast but you couldn't count on getting it started in the winter.

I've had 2 84 GTI's. A blast to drive!

First one had all the suspension rubber deteriorate to the point where I'd have to replace all the CV joints, tie rods, etc, because they were fracturing!!! Sold it to a guy who swore he'd have no prob fixing.

The second one had been converted to an auto at some point in the past. Talk about a power drop..heh But 3 different shops (one of them the dealer) couldn't find the problem with the electrical that the alt couldn't keep the battery up if everything was running (driving in the rain at night when it's cold, for example). Higher and higher amp alts didn't fix. Obviously a short somewhere, but NOBODY could find it! Finally gave up and got my Volvo that I love...

A coworker here has a 2000 Golf that literally breaks down once every 2 weeks. Don't remember all the issues, but last week the tranny sprung a leak and smoked itself on the freeway. Time before the oxygen sensor died. Time before that some other sensors (that were apparently recalled) died, forcing the car into "limp home" mode.

No, VW/Audi is nowhere on my list of cars to get in the future. Pre-GM Saabs and Pre-Ford Volvos are pretty much it for me for now.

i guess we should say the same thing about KIA & HYUNDIA ?

99 Passat GLX.

80,000 KM

Sunroof motor replace,
New Brakes and rotors (my choice to do so)
Driver's side half shaft replaced
1 Annoying rattle I am sure is a result of the brake job not being installed properly.

Other than that, it's alot of fun to drive.

I should say though, that when it was new, it was purchased for 45k CAN. It's a beautful car to drive and sit in, but for 45k, I can think of alot of other cars I would go for first.

So I guess, I'm on the fence when it comes to VW. Time will tell.

agreed, VW sucks.

secondhand experience, and actually firsthand because I witnessed it and became part of it.
cousin constantly called me to charge her battery cuz her batter kept dying because her alternator died... at 20k miles!!!

not to mention constant power window problems, cluster replacement at 25k miles, and numerous electrical problems. so yeah, VW sucks.

I had no opinion of VW either way, except that VW, Mazda, and Subaru parts are hella-expensive if something does break... Fortunately, I've been lucky and have had to replace very few parts on my Mazda. But, rather than form an opinion based on anectdotal evidence, I decided to consult the wise web pages of J.D. Power and Associates...

Basically, Volkswagon sucks as far as dependability.
(The only cars worse are: Kia, Daewoo, Land Rover, and Suzuki)

There you have it... Confirmed evidence that Volkswagon's suck. Not just an opinion.

Your reasoning is fundamentally flawed. The great thing about humanity is that we can communicate. People let others know about their bad experiences. Otherwise, we would probably be extinct by now because we'd all have to learn the same hard lessons.

Or, are you saying major purchasing decisions are exempt from this?

Actually, no. A mechanic ONLY sees the broken cars. He has no idea how many cars are out there that work just fine, because he ONLY sees the broken ones.

The only VW's I've ever owned were aircooled flat-4's.

And how could anyone see Hitler in the genius of Dr. Porsche? Do you see Hitler everytime you take a Bayer aspirin?
