Not so much here. We get a 15 minute coffee break in the am. If you're a smoker it's kind of the unwritten rule that you don't take that cofee break in the am but rather split it up into 5 minute smoke breaks during the day. Or do the same with time from your lunch.

wow...sounds like your smokers are the exception...it's not like that at the jobs i used to work at.

then we must be exceptions as well. we go for 2 5 min breaks in the am and pm, everyone else takes a 15 min break. they go put their food in the micro, stop at the restroom and get their stuff ready. then they take their break for 15 min, then clean up and go back to work. ive seen this at every job ive had. nonsmokers are slackers on a whole different level.

I am not touching this one. I will admit the smoking thing bothers me much more than the kid thing though.

The remaining 15 single employees would be worked to death. But they would receive (a lot) more during bonus time.

Yeah, fuck that. My time is no less valuable than a married person/parent. I'd probably sue you.

it seems as if there's a presumption as if people with kids time is more valuable with the childless. it's always annoyed me, as if just because it's illegal for me to adopt a kid, I somehow don't find it important to spend time with my own make-shift family.

You are slightly off track, but close. It usually isn't that your time is less valuable. It is that the free time that the parents have to spend with their kids and themselves is far less than those without kids.

This is particularly true with young kids. A lot of people without children look at parents and think that they just go home every night and are spending good time with their kids. This is often misleading. What is more accurate is that parents need to rush to make it to the daycare before it closes, go home and start dinner, eat dinner (kids eat very slow sometimes), make sure the kid gets bathed and brushes his teeth, deal with regular picking up cleaning that needs to happen since kids are generally messy, and then there is the other "random factor" where something does not go according to plan and needs your time. On top of all that, assuming you get home between 5:00-6:00PM, you need to get all of this done before the kid's bedtime. Mine is 4 years old and his bed time is 8:30. So, I need to get all that stuff done within 3.5 - 2.5 hours and try my hardest to squeeze in some quality time where I can actually spend time talking and playing with him.

...and we haven't even begun to talk about doctor's appointments and random errands to do whatever during the week. The list goes on and on and the time adds up to a lot leaving very little free time. Everyone's story is different.

And I work days..try getting to see a doctor or dentist after work, heck making it to the drive thru window at the bank is iffy.I also have the activities of daily living to do,laundry, shopping for essential items. Many days precious little time is left for me to do the fun, relaxing things I want to do.

Now we have 2 choices here..we can dump responsibility for our needs on our co-workers or we can expect people to take responsibilty for meeting
their needs on their own time.

I vote for option number 2.

so your parents never took time off to come see lil AMCRambler in a play...or to your graduation, sporting event, to take you to the doctor etc etc.

I can see how your personal experience would make you jaded. But it isn't the parent's fault, its the supervisor. The supervisor probably has their own kids as well. You should probably file a complain to HR and that should solve it. But it will probably backfire, and the boss will be ordered to hold all the parents accountable, instead of granting the bonus time to the non parents.

I think you are just in a no win situation there.

I wonder......how long before we see someone sue their employer for an EEO complaint, simply because of this sort of thing?? Might be good to watch!

I do remember, back when I was in the navy (in the 80's).......all it would take for a married guy to get time off work was to tell the chief that he needed to take his wife somewhere (doctor's appt, etc), to do something......didn't matter what, or how long it might actually take to do it, he'd usually get the day off from work, never mind the fact that she was just as capable of driving herself, she'd just have to drop him off at work in the morning and pick him up at liberty call time.
But a single guy could come up to the chief, as for HALF a day off, and he'd get the third degree. Didn't matter if you had half a dozen things you HAD to take care of, that would take you all over town, and should take twice as much time as you asked to get off. The answer was always, "And you need a half day off just to do that???"

We get PTO and how we use it is up to us.

As far as parents getting more lenancy when it comes to time off I will say that I routinely miss at least one of the two birthdays and I miss over half of the plays/ sport/ cub scouts stuff.

I have over 140 hours of accruded PTO and I can not take it do to needs of the company.

Of course I have personal accountibility.

I haven't read any of the posts but here's what ticks me off:

1) Co-workers who frequently call in "I can't make it in today because of my children".

2) Smokers who take breaks every 1-1.5 hours for a "smoke break".

Granted, this also means he has an influence deciding what should be and shouldn't important enough in your life by choosing where to place pressure when granting time off. I do not necessarily agree with that, but don't be pissed at the employees who have children that are getting the time off. It's not their fault. Their kids are much happier that their parents are able to spend time with them during these events which mean so much to them.

Would you rather see those parents be forced to tell their kids that they cannot make it to these things and disappoint them? Stop being so damn selfish. You'll be thankful when the day comes that you have kids and want to ask for that time off.

Too bad all your kids ended up in tube socks under your bed. Or maybe it's a good thing you haven't reproduced.

15 minute breaks are guaranteed by federal law... If you feel the need to give your employer 20 minutes of free work, go ahead, but don't call people who take advantage of their breaks slackers.

It's kinda funny that people put up with such crappy conditions at their places of employment. But, it must be nice having a purpose in life - your purpose is to make money for someone else. Anything you want is secondary.

It's not always that way in non-union private-sector jobs. ;)

If I had that conversation with my manager, it'd go like this:
Me: Joe (mgr), I'm taking off the afternoon of the 15th.
Joe: OK

No form even! :p

I get my work done, so my boss doesn't care when I get to work (usually after 10:00 a.m. - but I do put in 40 hours a week) or when I have to take a long lunch to run errands or when I have to leave early to make an appointment or when I have to work from home. He sets reasonable expectations for me, I exceed them, and he makes my life very, very easy.

I don't take off anymore time than other people I work with. Make up better excuses if your boss is an asshat and won't let you take off time for things you want to do, but don't blame those of us with kids because your boss is a douchebag. :|

Easy answer to all your problems go knock someone up.

And yes my time is more valuable than someone else's regardless of wether I have kids or not.

And yes I will take time off for field trips, plays or whatever and if work isn't flexible enough to work with me then someone else will be working 14 hours a day because I won't be there for sure.

I do however understand your point but like I said in this age its pretty easy to hit a bar and come out with a kid 9months later.

PS. You also get 6weeks off at most places now too wether your the mom or dad.

Who gets 6 weeks of vacation, and is the company hiring? I got 1 week my first year. Now I'm up to 2

What he really meant to say was that you could suck his cock. It was a Freudian slip, as people tend to relate/gravitate toward things closer in size to their own, hence the duck cock reference. I guess you could say that he's hung like a duck.
