Cooltechie, i was gonna say that too... my personal pick is "Heaven ain't hard 2 find"
hah you say gangsta rap spreads violence... listen to "Dead Homiez" by Ice Cube and tell me if it didn't change your thinking.
Dennil, it aint all about music. i cant pinpoint it from the top of my head but there are so many occasions where people will post racially offensive posts and get away with them. yourself being a white male their significance may elude you; you never know what it feels to be a minority. racism is suck :|

Just for your information, I am a French Canadian living in Ontario (a 70% Anglophone province). I used to like disco and dress disco in my undergraduate years. The university setting was one locale where disco was derided constantly. I chose a field of study that was belittled by other scientists and within it, chose the least popular and most ridiculed specialty. Yet I never became rude or lost my temper. So I know what it feels to be a minority, just not what it feels to be your minority.

Best Tupac song? hmm... I'd think Orney would really get into "Changes". Pretty mainstream with good rhymes.

Vicious-

When I was in high school, the stuff Eminem produces would have been considered gangsta rap. And considering who is affiliates are, I would have to think that he is in that category too.

Your telling me you have never heard any gangsta rap? Wow, it used to be on the radio (in extreme edited condition). The point is that it was filth. Now perhaps Eminem ism't as bad as I remember, but last I checked he was just as bad as his associates in that department.

Anyway... I've spent enuf time on this thread. Have fun peeps.

<< If anything causes violence, its this stuff that some people try to pass off as music. >>

Umm, no. We've been through this a million times and no one should blame any form of media on violence.

<< If anything, "gangsta" rap should be outlawed. >>

My man, there is no such thing as gangsta rap anymore - so drop it. People would like to think it's still around - but its not.

<< Do NOT tell me that rappers are not violent... >>

I could equally say that rock is just as violent, its just that the media likes to glorify it when it happens in rap because 90% of America is against it...

<< And how in holy hell do you get away with typing f---? >>

I got away with fu[/b]ck cause I'm special ;[/b])

Well, Ornery, have you decided yet? Comments after listening to Tupac?

RagingGuardian, I was just replying to some of your pretty strong statements as: "the board ... is crowded with racists;" "I consider an attack on rap music an attack on the black community." No offence meant by me and none taken.

Man, I gotta figure out this Napster progie! How do you mark files to download later?

I listened to "Life Goes On". Surprisingly has more than thumpa thumpa to it! It's better than the rap I've heard on SNL etc. I gotta hear the story of "Mr. Shikur" or however his name would be spelled. No, I can't quite make out 80% of the words, but I'll try again later.

I found 90 instances of "Dear Mama", but there is no full address to give you. It's about 4.2MB, so it's kinda big for me to upload to my page. Maybe I can help you out later using some other space I have access to. This would happen much, much later this evening, if at all.

Later Guys,
Ornery

Edit: OK, Mr. Shakur is... another drum roll... Tupac! And "his essence is pure". Don't know what it's about, but I've figgured that much out. Much better tune than the thumping bass I've been hearing, I'll give you that!

I uploaded Tupac-Dear_Mama.mp3. It's a different type rap tune too. I understood every word of it. Hope his mom appreciated it. I wonder if my mom would? I uploaded it to her web space! :p

Thanks for the kick in the pants. I'm having a lot of fun with Napster and my kids think I'm crazy listening to these new rap tunes. Ya gotta love that! ;)

Damn! May be a little late, but I'm sorry to hear of Tupac's death. Didn't get many details, but heard he died of complications from gunshot wounds in '96. Again, sorry.

I have to clarify that I don't hate the people that perform or listen to rap. I do on the other hand HATE the SOBs making all the GD noise around here. No reason for it that I can figure out, other than to piss people off.

I didn't hate the people that played or listened to disco either. Just really, really didn't care for it, nor is rap my "cup of tea".

Real emotions going on there, though. That much is clear!

Party on...

my whole goal on this forum is to convince people to experience first, then make their decision. im glad you now have a new understanding for hiphop, even though you might not necessarily like it.

Going to be some disjointed posting going on because I have Napster downloading files and I don't see a way to pause it.

I had downloaded "Bizzy_Bone-Life_Goes_On_(Tupac Tribute).mp3" before. I wondered why the voice(s) were different. Just listened to Tupac's original version. Still couldn't make out the words very well, so I located them on-line, 2pac, All Eyez On Me, Life Goes On Lyrics

Yeesh, what a miserable life! Short one at that. You guys want to talk about that lifestyle instead of the music? Start a new topic about it or something. I'd like to know basically, if things just have to be that way, and if so, why?

I'm not into that type music at all, but it sure sounds like some folks have some heavy baggage to unload...

Genocide-

Yeah, I know we shouldn't blame violence on any type of media, but at the same time they SEEM related. They aren't, but it's any easy relationship to form. Rock is just as violent I suppose, and your right, rap gets the attention because of its "relationships."

I hear you guys say there isnt gangsta rap anymore, but how do you know? could it be that what was once refered to as gangsta rap has been mainstreamed and does not go by that name anymore? Hell, even disco isnt dead (although its limping toward its grave). Have those particular artists retired? Eminem is promoted by at least 2 of those artists, and he sure as holy heck (im not as special as you) sounds like they did... perhaps I am just old (at 23, who'd have thunk it).

Anyhow...

Ornery, thanks for listening. I was happy to be partly instrumental in turning you on to hip hop (and Napster), Yes, there is some heavy emotion and power in Tupac's music.

Also, if you are interested, check out The Roots. They are still together and making awesome music. My favorite album of theirs is illadelph halflife (titled from a Star Trek episode). They are intelligent, rhyme and harmonize well and have a real feel for their art that is rare in any music. Plus their lyrics are easy to understand and have some real depth and meaning.

Try "Respond/React", "Section", "Episodes", "What They Do", "No Alibi" or "One Shine" (for some really spacy hiphop melodies). The entire album is awesome.

I am sorry you had such bad experiences in your neighborhoods with the "boom-boxes". However, if classic rock was popular with the youth of today it would be blasted late at night (instead).
