If I was given one bullet to shoot anyone I wanted, it wouldn't be a matter of choosing who, just a matter of figuring out how many rap "artists" (term used loosely) I could line up to get them all with one shot.

this post grew while i was away. ornery, my post is towards the bottom of the first page.

<<<< And if you don't want to hear "Ivory Ebonics", speak friggen English or there's a hell of a lot more coming at ya! >>

i dont know ornery, seems like you acknowledged it as ebonics to me. the only song you mentioned that i have heard the title of is stairway to heavan because i saw the waynes world movie. yes im sure i have never heard of those songs before. now as far as rating rap by its repetivieness, i would give it a 2, because i HAVE heard some songs that are VERY original, no samples of other songs at all. now if we were talking about puffy, i would give him a 10. but we arent, because he isnt a rapper, he may claim to be, but he isnt.

and why the hell should english be the national language? everybody didnt speak english when the americas were first started. if you put up a valid argument such as because the majority of America as well as the world speaks it, then i would agree. we are supposed to learn multiple languages to help us in life. do you know how many opportunities if you can speak a foregn language fluently?

btw ornery, the very basis and livelyhood of hiphop is to create new music from old. so when i said i have heard some original songs, i meant that they didnt use sampled tunes, maybe sampled beats.

when you say they should stop "stealing" and be original, thats like me saying rock shouldnt use drums, or guitars. look at hiphops instruments. turntables. turntables as you know are meant for palying records. records contain music. turntables are used in hiphop to make old music sound new, due in part to "scratching", "sampling", and to "mixing". with the aid of what is called an "MC", lyrics are applied to the instrumental
>>

now, like i said, i dont remember the title because it was before my time. i dont remember half the titles of ANY songs i listen to recently, but that doesnt mean that i dont like it and think it has value. i listen to so much varying styles of music that it woudl be impossible for me to remember the titles. you on the other hand even said it yourself, you have been listenening to the same music for the past 30 years, i would expect you to remember not only the names, but the lyrics and instrumental by heart. i think you have forgotten what change feels like, and you are truly afraid.

p.s. ornery, lets see you use "proper" english starting now. i will gladly point out mistakes i see, sound fair? good

futurmatic, yet another frivoulous and pointless post.

'Sides...look where you're posting. A damn tech site...post a thread like this on a music site and see what happens. "Tech-heads," "Geeks," whatever you wanna call 'em rarely listen to hip-hop and the like. I know a few people that like DMX, Ice Cube, and whatnot but that's it. The rest of the tech-bastards I know listen to stupid crap. Fvckin' Wierd Al, Air Supply, Dream Theater, indie rock that nobody heard of so they think they're cool, 80's... Worthless really

Plus, if you like anything they don't (Or god forbid post in the wrong forum and/or break the inane rules of net policy)...be prepared to get slammed for it hardcore.

I went to a Rage concert and Gangstarr opened for them...there were 20 people on stage and the bass was too damn loud so nobody could hear a damn thing. One of the guys was supposed to look like a convict and had these huge handcuffs on. He was supposed be intimidating so he broke the chain on the cuffs...but they were plastic, haha. You could tell easily...plastic shines different than metal. Also, they had 4-6 leather chairs on stage and some guys just sat there saying something here and there. What is that about???

I just can't get into it...

Ahhh! Someone mentioned Puffy. Good light or bad, he should not be mentioned at all. Actually, if I had one bullet I'd shoot Plant or whoever lent Led Zep's music to Puffy and actually performed with him.

There's parody and there's garbage. Weird Al I can get into because he's restricted to a previous artist's rhythm and most of the time rhyme scheme. Puffy just plays someone else's music in the background and makes up words. Wow, that is so tough. The worst offender ever is Kid Rock with "American Whitetrash" Or was it bada$$, who knows. It is the lamest song I've ever heard. Make puffy seem like a damn prodigy.

There's a few debates that will never die. Man vs Woman, Religion, Politics, and Music. People live by music and let it change them more often than they'd like to believe. It's a drug man. Might as well have a Heroin and Coke junkie battle it out because it can be that powerful for people.

Might as well stop arguing. Viciou$ isn't all of a sudden going to go "Holy Crap! You're right, I all of a sudden hate rap and will now buy other music." and I sure as hell am never going to associate rap to anything more than a dump on a piece of paper in comparison :) But we love to argue, don't we. It makes life somewhat interesting. F- you all! :D

shudder, there IS a chance that i would stop listening to hiphop as my favorite music. that is if all the REAL rappers stopped performing, and the mainstream rappers started up a VERY dumb(IMO) style of rapping. i dont think i could take it. but i would ALWAYS remember what hiphop used to be.

You can say that now about most music. I remember when singers could sing instead of sound like lame whiners. To "Us" all rap sounds the same, and to "You guys" all rock/alt sounds alike I'm sure.

It probably will change to something you don't like. Things evolve till they're out of your preference range usually. It has for me, but I have enough of my own stuff that I'm fairly content and it takes a tiny bit of something new to supplement what I already have.

You know this thread has gotten rather interesting. I have to agree with Brotherman that the people around here are two faced. This message board is really full of racists. If you don't like rap music don't listen to it and ridicule it. I didn't grow up listening to Rock and I can say that it's music I won't ever listen to. That doesn't make it stupid or useless as that's the way some people wish to express their artistic talent.

If you somehow dislike black people and anything that faintly represents its culture keep your disgust to your f@cking selves. There is no need to show you ignorance. Just don't post, it's as simple as that because now I'm offended that their's such a display of ignorance on the Anand message boards.

offended?

HA...expected... dude you dont even know how many times I've been banned from here because of the close mindedness thats on this board... I dont know how it is at other schools, but I go to Northeastern and all my friends that are tech majors make it a point to keep open minds cuz we see the type of personalities currently prevailing in this genre/career/hobby. When people actually give things a chance, you can really see some amazing ish. I mean this whole thing started cuz I aksed about a song and I specifically said I dont want to hear or care about peoples opinions besides about the song... but people here just cant help themselves..

its disgusting sometime.. i listen to techno, hardcore, metal, rap/hip hop, pop and even some fn country here and there.. and when i go to a show.. you see so many people that just Sh!t on a music type that isnt "theirs".. i look at those people in disgust, cuz they dont know and they dont want to know. Im convinced that close mindedness is the result of fear and jealousy and its scary how much of it is out there

"...flamers sayin "hiphop is crap" or some ignorant ass muthacukaz tyrin to talk in "Ivory Ebonics"!!!!" - KidViciou$ Oct/11/2000 12:24 AM

You coined the phrase. I'll defer to you for the proper terminology. Personally, I linked to the site that I got it from. They called it "Jive". At any rate, I was just giving you a dose of some unintelligible crap to see how you would like it. Sounds like you just LOVED it! By the way, who were the "ignorant ass muthacukaz" you were referring to?

English must be the official language because too many people feel that they are entitled to being taught at public school in their native language. We can't afford to spend that many tax dollars to appease every foreign speaking immigrant that comes along. There are a lot of people in predominantly Mexican cities in this country that want ballots printed in both languages. Where do we draw the line? What about the German or French families, do we have to accommodate them too? Where does it end? It could get pretty expensive! If we can pass the Official English Proposal, then no city will be compelled to accommodate all these non English speaking factions.

I'm not sure how far it went, but there was even a push to teach Ebonics in school. I think the Official English Proposal would squash that too. Hey, we can't afford this nonsense!

As far as rock being repetitive compared to rap, I gave rock a 5 and you gave rap a 2. I'd say rap is more like a 9 to rock's 5. Since you gave rap a score of 2, what would you score rock? Careful, your credibility is at stake here.

And finally, the only reason I'm getting in anyone's face in this topic is because of the "bumping boneheads" playing bass line BS around my neighborhood. I assume some of you guys play the same type crap at about the same volume, for no other reason than to annoy people. I can only get the cops to bust so many of these lamers. Yes, it's against the law here to be that annoying! Since you like to annoy people so much, I think it's only fair that I get a few digs in this topic. Remember that next time you crank it up!

I fail to see the connection between those two sentences. I dislike current white rap as much as black rap or oriental rap. It has nothing to do with race. It is strictly a musical preference and only for the recent stuff. I used to like rap when it was happy and about parties and feeling good, when rappers had a smile on their face rather than an agressive, insolent look as so many have nowadays.

Ornery - even though you get that kind of exposure to rap, do you think all of us always blast it like that? When you refer to these "boneheads", you're speaking about the people in your town. There's a country full of Hip Hop fans, don't speak for the whole country when you speak of your town. Be closeminded if you want - but don't generalize everyone because of some annoyances in your city.

Oh - they're all still around, you're just not looking hard enough. There are many rappers who enjoy their line of work and aren't the type you described in your post (the aggressive type). Look at Common, look at Mos Def, look at De La Soul - Hell even Redman has a great time with his music and whenever they're performing they're doing it for the croud - to entertain. Not all rappers are the punks you think they are - you'd be surprised at whats out there!

shudder, i dont think rock sounds all teh same

ornery, personally i didnt even read that crap you posted. i saw the first sentence and hit reply and posted that. and i think you can figure out who i was calling that name. personally i would give rock a 2 as well. like i said, i do listen to some rock, my cousin loves classic rock, and it is because of him that rage against the machine gets some of my respsect.

and when we blast our music, believe me, MOST of us are NOT trying to get any reaction. we dont give a $hit what people think. that aint gonna crush my groove.

dennil, im not 100% sure, but wasnt that sugarhill gang that did Rappers Delight?

I did not say all. I said so many. Let's not read more than what I wrote. ;)

Thanks for the list. However, most of the times I've seen Lil' Kim, she had a smirk rather than a smile on her face and she looked positively trashy. Must have been the slutty clothes she is so fond of wearing.

oh yea ornery and shudder, you say that hiphop doesnt take any creativity? this might not be the best example but it is a good one, 3-6 Mafia made a song sampling the boy from the shining saying "Red Rum", and it was sounding TIGHT. id like to see rock do that.

Don't worry about it, I know you didn't generalize every rapper out there - it's just that many people don't realize the other facets of Hip Hop =)

Ornery, you must really be losing sleep because of the loud music being played in your neighborhood at night. You are becoming less and less coherent in your anti-rap posts. It is becoming more and more non sequitur.

What does pushing for English as the "official" language have to do with rap?

Why bother to score rock at all? It is becoming a "dead language" as far as music goes. Hip hop is becoming the "next big thing" in music.

Personally, I play my music just below the volume so as to damage my hearing. I like it medium-loud to satisfy me - not "just to annoy you". How would you feel if instead "classic rock" was being blasted late at night to disturb your sleep?

I'm not trying to change your mind about hip hop. Just curious.

EDIT: Some crossover artists have done some awesome sampling. Sublime immediately comes to mind.

KidViciou$ - What song are you talking about that samples The Shining's "red rum"?

It's just that I meant that Ornery is becoming less coherent here. He has always been out of his depth trying to put down something he knows nothing about.

KidViciou$ - what's the song please (see above edited post)?
