1. Why else would anybody drive around blasting only a bass line?
 2. Speak English or be forever misunderstood
 3. "Just the same old, same old, repeated over and over again ad nauseam on the classic rock radio stations." You asked for it. Now which IS the same old, over and over, rap or rock?
 4. rap is not on par with rock on any level. Thumpa, thumpa, no wonder they just listen to the bass, they aren't missing anything!

Sorry to intervene here, but if that statement is true, why are you still arguing here?

Ok, Ornery - one more time. Try and get some sleep.

1. The bass line is all you hear through your ear plugs. Download some mp3s and listen to the words. For a fellow "old guy", I'd suggest starting with Tupac or The Roots (illadelph halflife album).

2. What's "English" got to do wif it? Need a translator? I think not. LISTEN.

3. Of course, "classic rock" is the same old repeated over and over. There is no new classic rock being recorded.

4. Agreed. Except I like hip hop better. It is new, forceful and creative.

If you don't listen, how can you do anything but ridicule?

EDIT: KidViciou$. I have heard that song. I can't find it. Help please with the title.

what you expressed was not an opinion at all, so don't try to play it off like that - stay the hell out of this thread if you don't have anything constructive to say

I as just reading The Source, and I was reading an interview with Scarface, and this part really got me:
"Likewise for Scarfacem who -though doesn't attend church- considers himself a deeply spiritual person. Something he says he inherited from his grandmother, grandfather and mother. His trip has included more than a few stops in fvcked-up neighbohoods, but he rolls on. His next stop? To build a church in his old neightborhood. But true spirituality doesn't ignore the secular, physical world that the body occupies, so he also wants the church to house recreational facilities and a computer lab. His reason? Time, he says, is running out.
"I really want to do something for the kids," he proclaims. "Time is drawing me closer and closer to the spirit, and the spirit is leading me to do different things with these children. We gotta save the children.".

C'mon now, even Ornery has to have something nice to say about this =)

I guess I should thank you guys. I just listened to Tupac. Not good quality, but I get the idea. I figured I'd compare it to a "rock" pick. Hmmmm, which one though? I went to the ones that started with "T", Tu... Tubeway Army! Cool. Might not qualify as "rock", but here's the links to what I heard:I had the RA file playing from Tubeway Army and my wife heard it. She was disappointed that it was only a snippet. She asked if we had any Gary Numan. Sure enough, I had the album! That's vinyl kids :) I dusted off the turntable and put it on. I'm listening to it right now! Great quality. Nearly virgin album. I was at his tour for Telekon too. Snapped these pics:Man, this is a hoot! That's "Hippy/Farmer Speak" for, I LOVE IT! Sorry, can't say the same for Tupac. Oh well...

Edit: Doing something "for the kids". What's not to like? :)

Hey Ornery - I also found another few lines in that interview with Scarface which I thought would catch your eye (about the whole "talent issue"):

<< A multi-instrumentalist with skills in piano, violin (!), guitar, and drums, he even played the music on a few of the racks. Interestingly enough, traces of his love for rock music surface on some cuts, and Face will cite Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, George Clinton and his favorite band, KISS, as musical influences. >>

I dunno - that just really caught me off guard =)

I'm impressed that you would even try to listen to Tupac, Ornery.

However, these little snippets just won't do. I just listened to Telekon - talk about repetative. I would hate to judge the entire album by what I heard. (Anyway, Neuman I know, no thanks.)

I'd suggest going to Napster - listen to whole songs by Tupac (Makaveli - The Seven Day Theory) and The Roots (and immediately delete them if it's a conscience thing). Then let us know what you think.

Har, I'm on POTS at 38,666bps. If I take the time to install Napster and download MP3s, I'm gonna be grabbing Dire Straits, Bowie and like that...

Thanks for getting me to bust out the LPs though. Now I'm listening to Diamond Dogs I'm kicking back... aaaaahhhhhh

It's a lot quicker than you think.

My connection is generally in the 30s. Figure about 5-10 minutes to setup Napster and 20-25 minutes for a Tupac song.

Then you're on your own. "Classic" rock abounds in Napsterland. Even "rare" stuff.

I used to like David Bowie - he was alternative way back when. I used to collect his albums when he was on import only. I lost interest about his Disco days (he preceeded disco circa "Young Americans"). I will still listen to "Ziggy Stardust" when a nostalgia fit takes me.

However, there isn't much new or interesting from him anymore. Hip hop rules.

Dennisfloss the board, if unknown to you, is crowded with racists. I don't care if I even get banned because this is the third time a topic has come up on the board where blacks are negatively stereotyped as a people. It all started about a song and went as far as rappers getting killed based on the fact that "rap sucks." From the top of my head I can say that more than 90% of rappers are black and if you don't know about the history of the music it was started by blacks in the Bronx and has since become part of our culture. Therefore, I consider an attack on rap music an attack on the black community. This is of course just my opinion and no one else needs agree.

You know what is totally F@CKED up? That's when you see that not even on the net you can escape racism. :(:(:(:(:(

RagingGuardian, not only whites are guilty of racism. There are plenty of racist blacks and people of all colors.

The roots of rock music also originated with the black culture as did jazz. That is something for black people to also be proud of.

At the moment, 90% of the rappers are black but that is changing as hip hop becomes international. It is a powerful force in music. It is international music that speaks to all opressed people.

Some of my personal favorite Pac songs:

Things Are Changing
Do for Love
Shed so Many Tears
Dear Mamma

Those are probably the songs off the top of my head that might make you think differently about him.

Genocide-

I am sorry if I offended you, but damn near everytime I have to listen to the c-rap of the guy 5 cars away because he is hearing impaired I am offended. My OPINION is that rap is LARGELY a form of communcation between people who cannot communicate otherwise. In another thread they are talking about how video games cause violence in today's youth. If anything causes violence, its this stuff that some people try to pass off as music. If anything, "gangsta" rap should be outlawed. Eminem should be dragged into the street and shot, with the cost of the bullet sent to his record company. Do NOT tell me that rappers are not violent... Do I need to name the rap "personalities" that have been involved in violence? It isn't coincidence.

Now, with that said, not ALL rap is this way. Some of it is respectable. That amount is minimal and it gets lost in the seas of filth spewed by other so-called "artists."

And how in holy hell do you get away with typing f---?

I'm overwhelmed, Ornery - besides being impressed.

I'd suggest "Toss it up" or "Hail Mary" or even "To Live and Die in LA" from Tupac's Makaveli (7 Day Theory) album. I'd like the other forum members to give suggestions as to the best ONE song Ornery might appreciate (technical skill, creativity, rapping, etc.).

I have to agree with you mostly about Disco. It was not my favorite music the first time around (I was listening to mostly Steely Dan and Jazz then). However, the hip hop reworkings of the disco songs have given them new life (for example "Blue Angels" off the Pras album).

EDIT: Definitely "Dear Mamma"; but it is not 100% representative of Tupac's regular style. Probably your best shot, Ornery, for something you might actually like.

thank you ornery, i didnt expect to convince you to listen to a song. i also agree wtih Dear Momma, or To Live and die in LA.

futurmatic, one thing you hav eto understand is that there is no more gangster rap unless it is SO underground that even i dont know about it. and what makes you any better than eminem with your violent portrayal of his execution?

i believe media doesnt have as much to do with peoples decision as much as the people themselevs. perhaps parents could play a role in the 21st century? and if you are saying rap is the cause of violence, well i can list many rock stars that were arrested, and are violent, so dont try to go there. you might be saying a lot of rappers are violent, but thats been their entire life, survival of the fittest(illest). im not condoning their actions now, but i can understand it.
