We could be watching history. It could be the fall of 1989 all over again.

foreign reporters are on lock down. the cable anchors are basically just checking twitter, facebook, twitpic, etc. might as well do that on your own.

Try as they might, the Mullahs can not shut down the internet, and nothing feeds a rebellion than more brutal repression.

Good work with the updates.

Let's pray that we get this revolution.

The elimination of the mullahs and the hard liners would be a HUGE step forward towards world peace. Iran is the number 1 supporter of terrorism and violence in the world. Eliminate them and watch what happens.
Prayer is part of the fundamental problem.

As reported, god has blessed these elections - no questions needed...

you aren't going to divorce iran from religion any time soon. iranians practically invented religion, particularly in the western sense of the word. shia islam is almost zoraostrianism with islamic names.

the mullahs need to be made to understand that forcing religion on people through violence, threat, taxes, 2nd class citizenship, whatever, is wrong. i think some clerics probably understand that a person can only truly come to god on their own, but they're certainly keeping themselves on the down low.

speaking of clerics on the down low, anyone have any idea what happened to rafsanjani? i don't think he's been seen in week

I imagine things are quite interesting and dicey in the true corridors of power in iran right now - potential allegiances, foreign manipulation, etc. Probably be good fodder for a ludlum novel.

While ELfenix is somewhat correct in saying, "you aren't going to divorce iran from religion any time soon. Iranians practically invented religion, particularly in the western sense of the word. shia islam is almost zoraostrianism with islamic names."

What is ignored is the fact Iran never quite fit in with the rest of the Muslim world. The Shia sect was on the losing side of the Muslim religious schism that happened very early on as Islam started its meteoric expansion, and the Sunnis were on the winning side. Until very recently, Iraq was also majority populated by Sunnis. Leaving Iran the only nation that has historically majority Shia.

And when the Brits were the power brokers in the Mid-east, they would not even consider backing anyone who was Shia in anything but Iran because it would anger the Arab dominated Sunnis in all other surrounding nations. The Persians have always been odd man out in the mid-east.

As it is, Iran now looks east for its future, a pipeline to India is needed to exploit Iran's vast natural gas reserves. Meaning they too need a stable Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Forgot, thanks. You know what I mean though - lots of intrigue and fodder for this type of novel.

Zombie Bourne! :D

Back to the topic: From what I read some say he went to Qom to visit some clerics but that news is unconfirmed. His daughter was seen at a Moussavi rally and two of his children were barred form leaving the country.

EDIT: He = Rafsanjani

Wow. :(

One of the people I was following on twitter has not posted in over 24 hours, I am wondering if he/she has been arrested, or worse.

Edit:

He/she just posted...

"it was a nightmare, I can barely breath & my face is burning, Masood got shot in the arm & Shayan's brother is missing"

That video will overthrow the government if the iranians get access to it.
Exactly. That is the kind of video that will rally the world to the side of the Iranian people.

If this revolution fails we should work with all the countries we can to completely cut Iran off from the rest of the world economically.

i wonder how long this will take to play out?

from the first mass demostrations/strikes the islamic revolution started late in 1977 and the shah fled on 1/16/1979. khomeini returned to iran from paris on 2/1/2979. the american embassy was stormed in october 1979, and the revolution cleaned out the opposition through the first couple years of the iran-iraq war.

film of the shah's soldiers firing into crowds of demonstraters really crystallized the opposition leading up to the islamic revolution.

Iranians will get access to it. Just not now. Iran can't continue to block off the Internet and satellite stations forever.

Looking at the video I wouldn't call her a 'young girl' she certainly looked to be in her 20s perhaps.

And notice that she is wearing blue jeans.

If she was not close to the protests as the video says you have to wonder if she was shot for wearing jeans by some nut job militant member of the police who took advantage of the situation.

Another young man shot dead NSFW

:(

Starts out as protesters collecting rocks, and halfway through the video you hear shots being fired and then people start running away form that area carrying the man's body.
