My thoughts exactly. Same formula with small tweaks and a new world to explore. Not compelling enough for me at all. The stilted quest/scripting mechanics are enough for me to lose interest.

But you weren't in the game....so you wouldn't know, right?

I'd say his viewpoint is pretty close to what I'm feeling if I was playing the game. It could be because I'm getting older and MMOs are just tedious to me now, but from the media I've seen it seems like it's super similar to already existing MMO titles. Then again, it HAS over half a year until it's done so who is to say this won't become the next big MMO. I just think the standard MMO format is done for the most part; Wildstar is still going to have a hell of a time dealing with the same issues as well.

P.S. There is a reason the NDA is so heavy. Think about why a company with a prominent IP wouldn't want you to see a product until the last minute. This has little to do with protecting trade secrets and more to do with keeping interest in the game. From what I saw on Friday on twitch, this game brings nothing to the table new aside from the UI and some basic elder scrolls stuff. I'd hardly say that doing crafting like skyrim is "an amazing change of gameplay". I dind't see crafting take place but the streamer mentioned its going to be exactly like skyrim. It's still crafting, just like it was in every other MMO. apply this to almost every single thing in the game and tada, the only thing setting it apart from other MMOs is the IP. Nothing new, the combat (from twitch streams on friday) looked pretty dull.

Combat apparently consists of click, long click, blocking, and a couple special abilities determined mostly by weapon type.

The ui looks nice though, so they got something right.

So it was pretty much what I expected when I saw the initial unveiling long ago. Totally forgettable and average in every way with horrible combat.

Seriously, they took the worst part of Oblivion/Skyrim, the combat and made that their combat system for an MMO with a with special abilities you can initiate on your own. The rest of the game was ok, if you played an MMO, it was like that but in the Elder Scrolls world.

I don't mind simple combat in an MMO, but imo ESO combat is just plain bad, I thought it was easily the worst part in Oblivion/Skyrim and it most definitely is here.

So needless to say, went in with low expectations and they were met on all fronts.

If I was in the beta for this game and had a chance to try it out.....I would say it might be pretty much like every other MMO except...in the world of TES.

That's not a good or bad thing, just an observation I would have had, had I played the game. I think I'm just not into what MMO's have to offer.

Is it a go here and kill x of those then go there and collect x of those games?

Then form an orderly queue to kill the big one of those.

Mhm, a few lore quests change things up on the main story line. Else wise it's go there, kill that/gather that, come back...oh good heres a reward.

That is exactly what I wanted to know, I don't like the combat in those games. I couldn't stand playing a MMO with it.

It's sad, I really enjoy the rest of those games so I keep playing but the combat just ugh.

It wasn't the worst MMO I've played and has some decent ideas, but I don't have very high hopes for it either. The combat was very weak (reminds me of Witcher, which also sucked). I thought the UI was pretty lousy - the compass is pretty well inferior to a mini-map and the Menu was convoluted using too many tabs and sub-tabs instead of making better use of screen real estate.

The quests themselves and the lore weren't bad. I found myself reading some of the lore bits I picked up and actually listening to quest text (the voice acting is pretty good I'd say) and exploring the alternate conversation options. Questing in the 'newbie' area (Port Herding or something like that) reminded me of questing in Dromund Kaas or Korriban in SWTOR - but in a good way, I found some of the quests and NPCs actually interesting in their own right and despite being "side quests" they still felt somewhat 'important'.

The "open worldness" of it is kind of compelling but I think I would also describe it as shallow. You can wander around and find random loot containers (and locked chests - not instanced I believe) and harvestables and quests but at the same time everything meaningful shows up on your compass as well - seems somewhat self-defeating.

Chances are I will not be buying/playing.

Yeah I played it over the weekend and was not impressed. The graphics are good, but that's about where the good stops. The combat is pretty boring, you just click click click to swing your sword or whatever, maybe hold click to charge up your swing, and right click to block. You get a few skills so you can press 1 or 2 to do a special thing.

I'll say the voice acting was kind of cool, impressive to see in an MMO - and the environments were sorta cool. However this honestly felt like I was playing a single player TES game with other single players running around too. The graphics aren't as good as Skyrim, and definitely nowhere near a modded Skyrim so even though the graphics are good for an MMO it still feels like a downgrade.

Most quests I had were "Go here, press this lever, come back", "Kill these things, talk to person", etc etc. I found myself skipping most of the dialogue and the lore parts.

UI is alright for a new MMO, though I'd imagine if they allow mods all that will replaced pretty quickly anyway.

There's no way I could see myself paying the $15 a month for this..

...and there is the issue. It's not bad. It's just like 99% of the other MMO's which isn't good. Having played FFXIV during the beta...I could practically interchange them.

Everyone wants to jump on the bandwagon, but no one is offering anything new other than the coat of paint.

OK, pretty much what I assumed. :\ I don't really like MMOs either, which is probably why I only really like GW and none of the others. ToR was fun until the endgame and the MMO stuff started.

as for the bolded--so, basically, perk into smithing and enchanting = win button? :(

I wouldn't know as it's not in the game right now. All I know is from what I've seen streaming and othermediaunderndacough I'd agree with the above posts. Six months is plenty of time to turn this game into something amazing so I'm not at all worried for this game.

I just think the whole running kill X things is just not my game anymore and even if this was the next big MMO, I'll be avoiding it as I cant handle this type of MMO.

I like the idea of an Elderscroll mmo. In my opinion many people just do not like mmo's. However, if you were to play an mmo I would recommend you play one like ESO because of the incredibly deep lore associated with the IP.

The voice acting, at least what has been put in so far and not vtt, was pretty good.

Agree on the graphics, it made me think of a modded oblivion, and I think a lot of that was the blanket lighting used. Everything was just 'bright', and I guess I've gotten use to more dynamic lighting.

yea that is the only downside I see for this, is a monthly sub. If it was like guild wars 2 i might bite, but so far from what I seen I may pass

I think I was the only person I know that didn't receive a beta invite for this past weekend. Despite even signing up well in advance of many people I know who did get invites.

From what friends were telling me, I wasn't missing much though for this weekend event of Error Scrolls Online.

Would have given you my credentials after 15 minutes of playing. Like I mentioned somewhere else, the classic escape from prison intro was even worse than Oblivion and Skyrim. This felt like an MMO I would play in 2002 with 2008 level graphics.

The graphics were fine...they had already said the graphics and voice acting would be improved on release and they weren't that bad to begin with.

The real issue was simply...it was just another grind fest with no real motivation to do it. Run here, kill 3 of these, etc etc. Same crap all MMO's do.

To be fair, I only made it to the second [third?] zone (the orc area after the pirate island) and didn't actually do anything there before the weekend ended, but I don't think I did a single "Kill X" quest. I mean I did have a quest to obtain a pirate outfit to disguise myself or something which inevitably required me killing some pirates, but I don't think there was a single "kill count" quest.

Really, there weren't that many non-story quests on the pirate island in fact. And most of them 'circled around to' or were at least somewhat related to the main quest line anyway, which was a nice touch.

Although I have enjoyed the elder scroll series since arena, including skyrim, and await any new single player additions. I do enjoy MMO's. I understand that many single player gamers resent the diversion of research and funding that mmo's create, due to the financial model that pulls more out our pockets. However, many of the newer MMO's have tried to limit the classic "kill 14 orcs" quests, as these have become the death nail of less sophisticated mmo's of late.
Often what upsets most gamers about MMO's is the formulaic nature of many of these quests, however, this approach does expand the game time. The key is not to ignore the fact that well thought out quest are the key to a good game, so these formulaic quest should only be a small percentage.
I did really like a new facet of MMO's that I experience lately. Neverwinter online allowed for player created quests, much like the mods in NWNs. This expanded the available quests and opened up the talent pool dramatically.
