The big crowds are back by 6am. Hopefully today it stays peaceful. I hope the protesters here are treated better than the Iranian protesters were. Richard Engel had some nice commentary yesterday with lots of local insight.

From what I understand the Egyptian military is standing by doing nothing to stop the gun fire.

Remember what Iran did? They let loose thugs and incited a confrontation. Once the confrontations began the guard came in and cleared it under the guise of security. Once over the protesters had public trials with state media making them out to be criminals...

But they have inolved themselves already. Before today they searched people coming into Tahiri sq. for weapons and checked IDs, but after Mubarak's speech yesterday they declared it was time for the protests to stop and then they ceased searching people for weapons and checking IDs and withdrew from their checkpoints.

What would be the chances between someone attending a Bush rally wearing a "Kerry for president" shirt back then vs a protester in Tahrir Square today? Which one would last the longest before being hauled off? Any bets?

The idea that pro-Mubarak guys spontaneously formed after his speech is preposterous. They look more like provocateurs.

Clashes starting in Tahrir after invasion by pro-Mubarak force. Some protesters injured lightly, 2 camera crews assaulted.

Very messy in Tahrir right now. Clashes. Could be a bad day. Looks like Mubarak says: you challenge me, you pay a price.

Mubarak seems to be trying to stage a crackdown not with police or army, but with thugs. They are armed and brutal.

In my part of Tahrir, pro-#Mubarak mobs arrived in buses, armed with machetes, straight-razors and clubs, very menacing.

I saw some people who were motionless and seemed badly injured. Hard to know casualties, but they're adding up.

Pro-Mubarak thugs everywhere have same talking points, same signs, same hostility to journalists. An organized crackdown.

This is a clear and brutal siege on what had been a peaceful protest. Sirens in the background, helicopters overhead.

The fact is, the protestors HAVE been extremely peaceful for days - now, if they hadn't we could debate the justification of any violence - but they were.

This morning began with face painting for children at the protest - until the forces there is strong evidence are paid thugs for Mubarak arrived to start violence.

Have you been watching this situation at all? For days and days it was quite a peaceful protest, especially considering the circumstances (no police at all and .mil staying fairly hands off). Even after thugs started looting their homes they stayed peaceful, to my amazement.

Then all of a sudden some dude riding a camel with a big ass Moses stick is charging into the protesters playing polo with the peaceful protesters heads... Still no police or .mil to help the protesters out, wanna know what we would have done here in the US? We would have peacefully pulled out our guns and shot that dude with the moses stick and BBQd his camel.
