Egypt protest broke out in violence

The big crowds are back by 6am. Hopefully today it stays peaceful. I hope the protesters here are treated better than the Iranian protesters were. Richard Engel had some nice commentary yesterday with lots of local insight.

From what I understand the Egyptian military is standing by doing nothing to stop the gun fire.

If they get involved then conspiracy theorists like Craig would say Mubarak just set the pros in motion to clear away the crowd under the guise of protecting the protesters from themselves and reestablishing law and order. Lose lose. Damned if you do damned if you don't.

Remember what Iran did? They let loose thugs and incited a confrontation. Once the confrontations began the guard came in and cleared it under the guise of security. Once over the protesters had public trials with state media making them out to be criminals...

These types of things have happened for generations back Roman times...

But they have inolved themselves already. Before today they searched people coming into Tahiri sq. for weapons and checked IDs, but after Mubarak's speech yesterday they declared it was time for the protests to stop and then they ceased searching people for weapons and checking IDs and withdrew from their checkpoints.

Kind of reminds me of the GW Bush rally's from days not ago.
What would be the chances between someone attending a Bush rally wearing a "Kerry for president" shirt back then vs a protester in Tahrir Square today? Which one would last the longest before being hauled off? Any bets?
Funny how we are about protesting here vs there...
Especially when those that attended the Bush rally's we not protesting, but just wearing shirts and hauled off by GW thugs. How soon we forget...

Holly crap!

5 killed & 800 wounded in 1 night.

Live blog Feb 3 - Egypt protests

8:42 am Egyptian state TV says five people were killed and more than 800 wounded overnight in Tahrir square.

8:35 am Anti-government activist Alaa Abdel Fattah in Cairo tells Al Jazeera:

I don't know what comes next, but if we are willing to die for it, I don't think we can be defeated.

8:08 am Anti-government protesters and supporters of president Mubarak continue to throw stones at each other as the sun rises above Cairo.

8:02 am According to Foreign Policy magazine, Al Jazeera "is seizing the message away from the bland propaganda of Arab autocrats".

7:46am The US State Department revised its warning to US nationals in Egypt:

REVISION: US citizens WISHING to depart Egypt on USG flight should proceed to airport asap AFTER the morning end of curfew.
7:37 am Hundreds of anti-government protesters are making their way to Tahrir Square for the 10th day of demonstrations against president Mubarak...

The idea that pro-Mubarak guys spontaneously formed after his speech is preposterous. They look more like provocateurs.

Clashes starting in Tahrir after invasion by pro-Mubarak force. Some protesters injured lightly, 2 camera crews assaulted.

Very messy in Tahrir right now. Clashes. Could be a bad day. Looks like Mubarak says: you challenge me, you pay a price.

Mubarak seems to be trying to stage a crackdown not with police or army, but with thugs. They are armed and brutal.

In my part of Tahrir, pro-#Mubarak mobs arrived in buses, armed with machetes, straight-razors and clubs, very menacing.

I saw some people who were motionless and seemed badly injured. Hard to know casualties, but they're adding up.

Pro-Mubarak thugs everywhere have same talking points, same signs, same hostility to journalists. An organized crackdown.

This is a clear and brutal siege on what had been a peaceful protest. Sirens in the background, helicopters overhead.

nah...they are Peace loving Muslims.....

How the hell do you get religion out of this?

You right wing nuts can't see pass your own agenda and stupidity

if they were Peace loving they would peacefully protest...use Ghandi as an example!!

I`m sorry Ghandi was Hindu....

The protests were peaceful until the dictator sent trolls like you to attack them. Reported you for trolling, but I doubt they'll give you that much needed 'vacation'.

if you don`t like my opinion nobody twisted your arm to get you involved in the thread.

It`s convenient how since you don`t agree with me that I must be trolling.......

So what issues do you have exactly with my claim that Islam is the religion of peace......

The problem with your sorry opinion is that this isn't the thread for it. Therefore, you are trolling.

Jediyoda, you are really coming across as a dishonest, uninformed propagandists here - which removes any credibility for your other middle eastern comments.

You should really think about why the truth and facts in this situation are so at odds with your views, as you sound like an anti-Muslim bigot.

The fact is, the protestors HAVE been extremely peaceful for days - now, if they hadn't we could debate the justification of any violence - but they were.

This morning began with face painting for children at the protest - until the forces there is strong evidence are paid thugs for Mubarak arrived to start violence.

You ignore the facts to try to attack them dishonestly, sarcastically.

They did peacefully protest. Millons of them, for days. Until the US/Israeli backed government sent thugs to violently attack them, they also include coptic christians and they aren't protesting anything to do with religion so why the hell are you spreading hate against muslims?

Have you been watching this situation at all? For days and days it was quite a peaceful protest, especially considering the circumstances (no police at all and .mil staying fairly hands off). Even after thugs started looting their homes they stayed peaceful, to my amazement.

Then all of a sudden some dude riding a camel with a big ass Moses stick is charging into the protesters playing polo with the peaceful protesters heads... Still no police or .mil to help the protesters out, wanna know what we would have done here in the US? We would have peacefully pulled out our guns and shot that dude with the moses stick and BBQd his camel.

Egyptian prime minster has apologized for attacks against protesters and promised an investigation into who is responsible.

Many members of the ruling cabinet have been detained including the person in charge of the interior ministry.

Until the US/Israeli backed government sent thugs to violently attack them,

Dude get a grip!! This violence had nothing to do with Israel or the United States!
It`s always easier to blame Israel or the United States when you don`t understand something.............

In your opinion.....which amount to a hill of...
Nice try but all you idiots who are claiming that the violence is inspired or backed or approved of by Israel or the United States are just plain goofy!!

WTF does religion have to do with this? This is all about politics, idiot.

Umm no its not about politics. In the Muslim culture politics and religion -- that is the Muslim religion go hand in hand!!
You say it`s about just politics but lets see which Muslim group takes control of the government.....

One of the best lines I read was a Yahoo Headline.

Egyptian Prez sorry about the out the outburst of automatic guns from his military.... Or something like that.
Now THAT is the best example of "easier to ask forgiveness than to ask permission".

UNBELIEVABLE.

The people responsible for the violence are connected to the government, which proped up by the west to help protect Israel and the Suez canal.

You must be a sick and hateful person if you're mind ignores the fact that millions of muslims protested peacefully in a Gandhian fashion until the secular government attacked them as well as the fact you ignore that not everyone involved is a muslim!
