I intend to watch it, unfortunately my work schedule prevents it at the moment.

I do have to say, I am hard pressed to say if I like, or dislike, a female Starbuck.

I do not think I am being sexist, although I may be. I just liked the old Starbuck. I will have to wait and see how the character was done before I can say. :\

If I am lucky, they will replay the eppisodes this weekend. But I bet I will have to wait for a while..... :(

I'd have to say that at this point I dislike the current Starbuck. Not the principle of a female in the role per se, but this particular characterization. I also dislike the fact that the "female" cylon appears to be obsessed with sex. It just doesn't seem right..

Hhahaaa my friend just IM'd me ranting about how they took a dump on the original series.

Given that the sfx look mediocre and they CHANGED THE CYLONS INTO WOMEN, I think I won't be watching it, sorry.
Just remind yourself of Galactica 1980, watch this new show, and you'll feel much better about it. ;)

Excellent show, can't say that I liked it as much as the original, but good scifi here, can't wait to see part two. Battlestar the Next Generation.

The Dirk Benedict Starbuck was like Han Solo; he was a swine, but at least he was rogueish and entertaining. The new one isn't (although I did like the cigar smoking as a nod to the original).

I also don't get the female Cylon's sex addiction; she's like a weird cross between Terminator X and Xenia Onatopp. Except she kills babies, so she's even more eeeeeevil!

I realize that it was a premiere, but I found the exposition to be stilted and forced (even from a superlative actor like Olmos), particularly in the Adama father and son reunion scene. I didn't watch much more beyond that.

"I liked the Cylon fighters, though.. The red lights on those was a nifty effect".

That was the staple of the original series. On Earth bound spin-off came after that in the form of a Pontiac TransAm on steroids called Knight Rider with the exact center red light in the hood.

If the DMCA was in place back then I'm sure the Galactica folks would've shut down Hasselhoff and Company.

Later a whole series of movies based on Machines coming back for their Masters came about called "Terminator".

I enjoyed it a great deal. Sure there are some changes, but anyone who thinks the original series could not have used some changes is deliusional.

The female Cylon? I have no problem with her. She is one of 12 models of Cylon and her model was made to infilitrate humanity. She's a spy...how better to spy than be a sexy woman?

Starbuck? Eh..too early to tell. No she isn't the same character, but we really didn't learn much about her other than the fact that she's hot headed and has a temper.

Commander Adama? Olmos is doing a good job with him. I like the new character, he seems more in charge and like a no nonsense guy who would actually be in command of something like the Galactica.

Apollo? So far, so good. I like the fact that he isn't as chummy with his pops as he was in the original series.

The plot? I'm liking it. No more rah rah hooray humans garbage. It seems much more dark and realistic. Can't wait to see tonights show.

Special effects? Well done, especially for a TV series.

I enjoyed it as well and I am looking forward to watching tonights show.

Edit: The first thing that shocked me is that Starbuck is a girl.

I thought it was pretty good all things considered. TV and film is in a huge talent slump so I wasn't really expecting much I guess.

All the actors did a great job with there characters. I also liked the script and the relationships that it sets up. I liked the "Why can't we use hanger B?" "Because it's a gift shop" gag. :)

I do agree that it was sexed up too much. It would've been much better leaving her a mystery and not a prositute. Even if they woulld've changed that very first scene at the outpost to something different it would've been 100% better.

i liked it .. wasn't big on starbuck being a woman ... the rogueish character just sat better with me as a man ....

I do question how they can call it a SciFi original though .. i mean .. like 50% of the movies coming out lately ... its a remake!! LOL

how can you replace a main character that was a male with a woman?
won't waste my time watching yet another show ripped off from my childhood because the jackasses at the studios haven't got enough freaking brains to get an original idea...
tv is a waste of time these days

I rather enjoyed it. I only had a few problems:

A. Cylons were created by man? Bullsh!t!! Cylons were created by a race of reptilian people called Cylons. Eventually the reptilian died out and the mechanical Cylons continued to live on.

B. They only took names from the original. They completely threw-out the whole governmental and religious model from the original.

C. The music, while very good, did not include hardly any of what I, personally, consider one of the greatest orchestral scores ever recorded. :(

D. The whole anti-computer network thing and the Cylon EMP type attack was too predictable.

I don't know how any of you can have a problem with the FX and acting. I thought a superb job was done on both.

I'll sure be tuning in tonight. Anyone know how many episodes there are?

ps....I thought the new Cylon Centurian design was pretty sweet.

I think it's a good thing that they threw out all the religious hoo haa from the original. Even back then all the mystical garbage they had in the show bothered me. As for the government model....I'm interested to see where they go with that. We are already seeing a rift between the civilian leadership and the military, should be interesting to see where that goes. Gotta love the fact that the person 42nd in the line of succession is now in charge, everyone else was just wiped out.

As for the Cylons being created by man.....that actually does throw in a bit of a religious aspect....it's just not Mormon this time. It's Mayan.... Read some Mayan history/religion and their beliefs on that type of thing. One of the things about the Mayans that has always interested me is their belief that the world is created and destroyed in cycles that their calendar is based on. At the end of each calendar cycle the world is destroyed and renewed. Destroyed by what? Ahem....nature and the things that man has created to help conquer nature. It might interest you to know that the current Mayan cycle ends in 2005, may be 2006 I can't remember. Insert Twilight Zone music here....

I really like what they are doing...it's not all FX based and is a real show with a real plot. I have to say again....I enjoy the feel of the new show...it's dark and desperate....just like it should be for a group of people fighting for their existence.

I was a big fan of the original series. I really seriously thought this remake would suck major donkey balls, but I was very pleasantly surprised to find that it was actually pretty good.

****1st episode SPOILERS****

Pros
1. A pleasant blend of new and old. I really like how they made the Galactica a 50-year-old outdated ship, that suddenly (and suspiciously conveniently) becomes the last Battlestar, complete with old Mark II Vipers. The new vipers looked pretty cool. Too bad they're gone.

2. Baltar isn't the uber-evil dude. He's much more realistic as a selfish, egocentric jerk who was too stupid to realize he was in over his head.

3. Olmos as Adama. Since Lorne Greene is dead, Olmos did a nice job of filling Adama's shoes.

4. As with the original series, there's a rift between the civilian and military heads. It seems that they're going to play this angle up a lot more in the new mini-series.

Cons
1. Female Starbuck. This is just wrong. But...at least she smokes cigars, plays "Pyramid/Poker/Full colors! (whateverhtehellthatis)." At least she's still a hotshot pilot. Maybe she's heavy into girls too! :p

2. The music matched the action sequences quite well, but as Amish pointed out, this ain't no great John Williams score.

3. Female sex-crazed cylon. WTF is this? I guess it makes sense, since she's a spy, but...

4. You'd think the Colonials would have learned from the first Cylon war that they can't trust their computers too much. At the beginning of the show, the tour guide even said that the Cylons could control computers.

I think it would have been pretty hard for Glen A. Larson to sue himself. :p
He produced and wrote quite a number of top TV shows back in the 70s and 80s. Besides Battlestar Galactica and Knight Rider, he also did Buck Rogers, the Fall Guy, and Magnum P.I. (among others).

I'm with Amish on the orchestral scores. That is one thing I know I don't like in the new -- the stupid drum music. The old show had amazing music, certainly on par with Star Wars (which was contemporary).

As for the old show and its excessive optimism... folks, that was just the way it was back then, especially on TV. I don't know exactly when "dark" entered mainstream entertainment, but it's really only been in the last 10 years or so.

Anyway, it's not perfect, but it's pretty damn good at this point. Better, IMO, than Enterprise. I hope it goes to series.

I need at least one Cylon saying "By your command" though... just one...

**can the OP please add "SPOILERS" to the title?**

I felt that issue was touched upon more than once and in depth early in the show. For example, the tour guide calls the Galactica antiquated, and Mary McDonnel's character argues with Adama about upgrading the computer system. There's also the TV news show early on when Baltar is shown pleading his case about even moving forward with AI again.
There are a lot of references to "the Cylon War is over". The Galactica is being decommissioned even.
I get the impression that 2 generations have gone by after the Cylon threat and that the Colonials have settled down to peace and apathy. Remember Adama's funky speech, "your sins always come back to you" or something like that.
