I too have built 3 system with that great board myself & have had not 1 problem and have a 1.4ghz Athlon on a rev 4 board.

But i have used Quality ram & AMD aproved power supplies in my builds, like others have said only cheap skates who skimp on pos ram & psu's will have problems.

Or rather cheap skates who can't buy a quality board that can handle diverse kind of memories and PSU's.

I just bought another K7S5A with a Duron 900 for my parents computer. Still not a single problem. I used Micron PC2100 RAM and a 300W power supply that came with the Enlight case.

Well, to summarize things:

1. Don't pair up a value board with an Athlon/Athlon XP. If you can buy an Athlon, you can buy a premium board.

2. stick with SDRAM on this one, I'm using two sticks of generic 256 PQI PC133 RAM in it, and no memory problems since Day 1.

3. Sometimes, flashing the BIOS does wonders. :)

4. Sometimes, WinXP can do wonders, especially with IRQ conflicts (the only problem I had)

5. Use a powerful PSU, the best you can buy. I'm operating it on a 235W one, but haven't had any problems so far too.

6. I'm a noob, this was the first system I actually built from scratch; and I can tell you it's very easy to configure: All I did was set Primary and seconday masters to auto, set the time right, enable SMART, set FSB to 100/133 and disabled PCI IRQ.... although it doesn't have a complete array of overclocking features. However, noobs shouldn't be overclocking in the first place anyway. ;)

I have had no problems using an Athlon Thunderbird or Duron, AND I use DDR-RAM, but I use name brand DDR-RAM. IMO, Shiori, you got lucky not having problems with generic RAM.

Why not? Mine works just fine with my XP 1700 and it saved me a bunch of money.

Obviously cost wasn't my motivation for getting K7S5A. It was the SiS chipset hype as I found in reviews and word of the mouth that it was the fastest chipset at the time.

I tried using SDRAM on it as well since I have SDRAMs for the computer I'm using right now(Intel 440BX chipset) and it wasn't any better.

Sometimes forcefully running the whole mobo at 2.45GHz helps too.

Before I'd shed extra $50 on a PSU, I'd shed extra $50 and get something better than K7S5A

I hate K7S5A
