edit: OKAY, I'm not alone at this. Someone viewed my page and came forward to me with his own K7S5A picture. I'm sure there are many more people completely frustrated with this board.

I bought an ECS K7S5A after being told it has the fastest chiset(at the time).

troubles: BSOD unless running at 100FSB, hardware detection wizard re-detecting everything and totalling messing up my system to the point I have to reinstall everything, crashes during OS installation and mysterious CMOS data loss.

I was using 1.4GHz TB Athlon with it. I heard AMD Techs have confirmed K7S5A and 1.4GHz TB don't get along somewhere
Apparently, more people had trouble with K7S5A after reading on various forums. I'm not saying K7S5A is a bad board. Its just that I had a very terrible luck with it.

One of the suggestion was sell it and the other was drive it over. I couldn't sell something so nasty and troublesome to someone, because thats just wrong.

Is this a rare problem?? you be the judge

I beg to differ. I nuked it with our microwave oven and it died within three seconds.

Well its finally up on my webspace.
I finally nuked a mobo :D There are five pics related to K7S5A.

How to do it:

1. place mobo in its retail box.
2. place it in a microwave oven
3. close the door
4. set on high power
5. cook for five seconds

i wish you woulda given it to somebody instead of throwing away 60$... but hey, its your board and your money.. if you've got it to break things like that, more power to ya...

I don't get it. Why are you flaming him for breaking something of *HIS* own?

If someone needs it they should go get a damn job, earn money, and buy the damn thing.

What was wrong with the K7S5a or whatever anyway?

I had it for about a week and it was fine.

Pretty funny to microwave it though, surely putting metalic objects in an microwave is not intelligent lol.

Did you happen to see sparks flying?

Answers:

A. Somebody else is working on it for me.

B. Not really.. I only did it for a second or two in its original box, because I didn't want to ruin the microwave.

C. I tried and tried and tried getting it to work the first week.. Got it exchanged once to no avail and I was stuck with it.

D. I didn't want to sell something to people, that I know isn't going to work for them

You still haven't told us what problems you had! I have the same board. I seem to have problems with both the on-board sound as well as SBLive, the SBLive of course isn't quite as bad as the on-board sound, but still the quality is somewhere around the level that you'd have to pay me to buy it knowing it would be like this. Haven't been able to fix it yet here either.

When I have money comin' outta my ears maybe I'll smash it up ...

I've got one and its working fine. Infact its running a 1.4@1.6

The reason he's getting flamed: Its a computer hardware web site. This is a waste of computer hardware. If it was a gerbil website and someone posted that after being bitten by their gerbil they decided to nuke it, I think it would be reasonable to expect to get flamed

Problems:

memory errors
random BSOD
windows hardware wizard redetecting everything on motherboard totally screwing up the system
instability unless I run my 1400MHz Athlon at 1050MHz

I spent HOURS AND HOURS AND HOURS to no avail. I asked for help in forums and nothing worked.. therefore I gave up.

<< How could U have any probs with the board??? What's wrong with U people? Yes, I'm using onboard sound and LAN, but haven't noticed a single problem yet. My ECS k7S5A has been and is still flawless even after the CPU change (D600 - D1000). Flash the latest BIOS and it'll fly. The board by itself isn't defective and not worse than any other board. >>

So if your board works fine, then ALL of them must work perfectly too... ;)

What makes U so sure? Do you really think so? I think the secret of my success is that I use a 1GHz "Morgan" Duron with it. People who have issues all have Athlons 1.2 GHz+, this guy Jerboy too, BTW. And I see where the problem is: a 60-buck board was not intended to be used with a $120 CPU. I don't know if I'm right, but have there been many complaints about this board with Durons? ECS didn't think we would really run 1.4 T-Birds and Athlon XPs on it, so these probs should be no surprise to you.

Ok,

I have been asked "what was the problem?" quite a few times and I am going to list the problems here.

First of all, the ECS K7S5A was EXTREMELY picky about memory module. It caused lots of error with a program called memtest86 available from memtest86.com. When computer is booted to Windows, the hardware wizard starts detecting "PCI IRQ steering host", BIOS(fail safe), Real time CMOS clock, 101 key standard keyboard, Logitech compatible mouse, SiS bus bridge and countless features of motherboards. It happens without warning and I can't predict when it will happen. The system will try to restart and I am greeted by Blue Screen of Death. Ok after this, everything is messed up and it requires CLEAN reinstall of everything. During the installation of Win Me, one out of three resulted in BSOD or hard freeze during installation.

It had a problem with IBM hard drive as well. It caused the HDD to click click click on every reboot and required cold reboot.

The problem went away when I dropped FSB to 100MHz and let my CPU run at 1050MHz. I have heard that two different AMD techs have acknowledged the problem between ECS K7S5A and 1.4GHz AMD Athlon Thunderbird, which is what I used.

Other than that, it gave me BSOD just about everything machine shuts down or reboots.

Different power supply, diferent CPU, reseating everything and nothing worked. New memory module made the random hardware detection go away, but I still didn't trust the machine

My crap set up was:

ECS K7S5A
AMD Athlon 1.4GHz 266MHz FSB
256MB generic DDR
ATI Xpert98 videocard
onboard-audio
IBM Deskstar60G 40GB(then I changed it to Quantum)
