I had a $350 laptop listed on eBay. Today, I receive confirmation via e-mail that the item was purchased (it was a Buy It Now listing). Shortly after, I receive another e-mail confirming that payment has been sent via PayPal.

Now, I receive an e-mail from the buyer, and he tells me that he's made a mistake and bid on the wrong item. He said he had multiple windows open and wanted to buy a Jornada. He's asked me to refund the payment. He has offered to pay for the relisting fee. He didn't mention anything about the final value fee.

I understand that people make mistakes with bids, but with a Buy It Now listing? He buys it, then he even sends payment without noticing that he's bought a laptop instead of a Jornada? It just seems a bit absurd.

The last item I had on eBay was with a non paying bidder, now this.

Update #1:
Interesting development...

I did a search on eBay with his account name. Turns out he also bought a Joranda today with Buy-It-Now for $300.

He bought my laptop 49 minutes after buying the Jornada. Now how exactly did he make that mistake?

Update #2:
I refused his request for a refund. I told him that he can just as easily relist it himself if he decides he doesn't want it. I said he could use my photos and information on the laptop so it would require very little effort for him to put it back on eBay.

He seems alright about it now. He even said that it might suit his needs more than a Jornada anyways. He was supposedly planning to buy 2 Jornada 720's for a small business.

He has 71 positives and no negatives, so I don't think he's going to try to do anything funky.

So, hopefully there won't be any problems.

Thanks for all the input. :)

Don't make the dude buy something he doesn't want. Let him pay the relisting.

You have his money so you have him by the balls so to speak.

Send him the laptop and tell him if he wants his money back he can sell it on ebay.

Ebay is nothing but a huge hassle. I don't know why people bother with it. Even selling which is much more hassle free than buying, can be a pain in the butt as demontrated by this.

I think he's trying to scam you.

Send the laptop, and tell him to have fun with it. You shouldn't refund him jack.

Make sure that he re-imburses you for eBay listing and Paypal fees.

Also request that BEFORE you refund his money, he leaves you a positive feedback.

It's called a restocking fee, lol.

Figure out what the final cost of your ad was, including the final value fee, and double it... make him pay for you to list it twice and call that the restocking/inconvenience fee. Then just send him back his money, minus the fee's etc. Run it by him first, if he complains about it, then just complete the sale... meaning, send him his laptop =)

Make him pay all the fees. If he does, then just give him back the money. I don't see any point in trying to dick him over.

"Don't make the dude buy something he doesn't want. Let him pay the relisting."

I just have a hard time seeing how someone buys a laptop thinking they are getting a Jornada handheld. It wouldn't seem so ridiculous had he not sent the payment. The payment clearly lists what he was buying, as did when he clicked on "Buy It Now". It makes me wonder if he can even read.

So I can either relist it and hope that someone else buys it, or I can just send it to him and he will probably leave me lousy feedback.

If he doesn't intend to pay the final value fee, then I'd be out about $12.

I'm just getting tired of people acting so stupid on eBay.

make him pay final value, listing fees, and paypal fees both ways - to receive the money and to send it back to him.

1. charge him whatever fees you incur
2. ask him to leave positive feedback
3. paypal him back his money minus the fees, minus fifty dollars
4. when he emails to ask about the fifty bucks, tell him you had multiple windows open and must have made a mistake

Ok, so there is the PayPal fee of $10.83, $5.75 listing fee, $10.11 final value fee, $5.75 relisting fee...

I don't think I get charged to send PayPal?

He probably found another laptop cheaper and wants that one instead. I have gotten this 'multiple window' crap several times...everytime I tell them to relist it once they get it.

I also do offer a penalty way out if I think they are not buying elsewhere.

I don't have the time to follow all these ebayers mistakes.

I usually just charge them paypal+ebay+andale fees and offer it to the next high bidder or just relist. That is if I haven't printed out the postage and stuff already, if I already have I charge them my 20% restocking fee.

Sure, you could go to the trouble of sending it to him and he might decide to not accept the package or something, which just creates more work for both of you. Might as well keep it simple, no? And no need to create a hostile atomsphere, you never know when the situation might be reversed (as in someone holding the upper hand over you).

Yeah, I hate the stupid people but what can I do? For a few hours a day, I can make more on ebay than I would working my ass off at McDonalds or something for a whole week. Compared to that I'll put up with the occasional stupidity.

If you fill out the thing on ebay about a Non-Paying Bidder you'll get your final value fee back.

Not quite. Don't tip your hand until after he gives you positive feedback. Make sure he thinks that you are trying to decide what to do. That way you can get positive feedback and hold all the cards too.
