Regarding your update: since you have proof that he made no mistake, tell him to fvck off (in nicer language) and that he really made no mistake, he just changed his mind.

If this were me I'd eithertell him to resell the laptop himself or like veryone else said, charge him relisting fees and an inconvenience fee of $50

I did a search on eBay with his account name. Turns out he also bought a Joranda today with Buy-It-Now for $300.

He bought my laptop 49 minutes after buying the Jornada. Now how exactly did he make that mistake?

he is a lying troll...ship him his laptop that he bought

Not quite. Don't tip your hand until after he gives you positive feedback. Make sure he thinks that you are trying to decide what to do. That way you can get positive feedback and hold all the cards too.

if the troll does leave a negative, it can be disputed. The guy lied, and got caught. He can deal with the consequences

Whoever said to just ship it, bad idea. With paypal all he would have to do is return a box of rocks, give them the tracking number, and they would have the laptop and the money. Or they could just send the laptop back the sameway.

you can recover the final value fee through ebay.

if it were me, i'd just be cool about it and refund the money, minus listing fees and perhaps some sort of convenience fee. sure, he probably lied about bidding on the wrong item, but at least he paid you - lot better than those trolls that purchase and never contact you.

a small point but if you click on the details portion of his paypal payment to you, you can send a refund to him. It will not cost you any paypal fees as he would get the whole payment back. You really shouldn't charge him for paypal fees because those are refunded (as well as the final value fee if you go through the refund process) but you can deduct for listing, restocking, hassle fee, etc. Make him send you those fees before you will take about a refund. Regardless, since he is having buyer's remorse, you have the advantage. You can decide whether you want to refund or whether you want to ship him the item. Beware of chargebacks or him trying to scam you through paypal i.e. follow the so-called seller's protection rules i.e. shipped to confirmed address, etc.
Good luck

It's never worked for me, I have a few negatives from people who have negative feedback even and I couldn't get eBay to do anything about them. Sellers are more at the mercy of bidders than you think.

Go with your gut feel and do what you would want him to do if your positions were reversed.

Is there a certain amount of time before a PayPal payment is totally "clear"? As in, he wouldn't be able to try to scam me through PayPal. Then I could send it, if I knew he couldn't try anything with PayPal.

Tell him you'll return his money minus $30 for the inconvenience and the relisting fees. Positive feedback isn't really applicable in this case... so tell him to leave neutral feedback stating that he made a mistake and you were nice enough to return his money if he paid your listing fees. Then you should leave neutral feedback for him as well, stating the same thing. If he's uncooperative, send him his laptop.

As someone said above, make sure that you just click on the 'refund' link for his payment instead of sending him another payment.

As far as him making a mistake, that seems pretty much impossible. He bought a Jornada for $300 49 minutes before he bought my laptop. He told me that his mistake was that he had multiple windows open and bidded on the wrong item (my laptop instead of the Jornada).

Liars disgust me. :|:disgust:

if u make him go ahead with the purchase, 30 days from now he'll rip u off by disputing the charge and getting a free laptop. u'll lose the money and be hit with a chargeback investigation fee, just let him off the hook and make him pay the incurred fees that of which are not refunded

ebay wins either way. they promote fraud

I'm very reluctant to giving in so this lying fool can get his way.

Isn't Ebay fun?

Jesus, why do people bother with that lame site? I had nothing but problems over there. One guy sent me a 2 year old radar detector instead of the brand new still in the box one he listed. It took 2 weeks of emailing before he took it back and refunded my money. The lies he told over and over were unreal. I couldn't go through Ebay's fraud protection program (A total joke) because they won't cover you if you buy from someone with NEGATIVE feedback. Remember that, if you are buying check the seller's feedback. Any negatives and you will not be covered. Even then, Ebay's fraud insurance only covers $200, then they subtract $25 for some reason so you really only get back $175.

Another guy gave me negative feedback after he broke the CD I sent him. He told me in email that he broke the CD taking it out of the case. He wanted his money back saying it was my fault!!! I told him to get real. He left feedback saying "Dont buy from this guy he sends broken CDs!" Yes, I answered his feedback but it was really hard to tell what happened since Egay only allows you 80 characters or less. Ebay is a nitemare.

You will get shafted sooner or later.

I actually had a similar thing happen the other day. Needed a cable for my parents' digital camera so I had a couple windows open. Then I thought "heck, I'll see if there's one for mine". I've got each of the windows scrolled down to the bid price... I bid on one for my camera... bleh.

Said I would honor my bid, but if there were any way out of it, I'd appreciate it.

There's always the chance he wanted more than one Jornada. Not jumping to defend the guy, but I also don't like to see the pitchforks and torches all the time.

Try to get in touch with the seller of the Jornada to see if a similar stunt is being pulled there, maybe this guy has somehow hijacked an Ebay & Paypal account and is pulling some kind of CC fraud.
