E60 on Ovechkin...

I really hope the NHL can take advantage of all the young talent they have in the league right now. Ovechkin is an AMAZING player. His goals, his flashy style, his grit. He's exactly what the NHL needs. If they market him alongside Crosby/Malkin, come on. That's like the Lebon/Kobe marketing that the NBA has. They are AMAZING players.

E60 though has really opened my eyes to the type of player he is. I never watched many of the caps games, but after watching him on here I'll be sure to watch more of his games. Seems like a really cool guy, entertaining etc. I love it~!!!

Damn, hockey is awesome. I don't know why more people can't appreciate this sport.

I can understand personal preferences for sports. I love soccer, but I can see why a lot do not. It's slower, harder to get into. A lot of cry babies, not as physical. But Hockey, I mean... come on. It should be everything Americans want. Fast, aggressive, not many breaks. Physical, flashy, fighting, blood. Intensity (especially in the playoffs) rivalries, some amazing athletes.

What is there to dislike? The only thing I could imagine is the puck being hard to follow, but really... is it that hard? I don't think so.

no matter how much marketing they do....its still hockey

Yeah, I mean you'd think they wouldn't need marketing to get people to watch a fast-paced, exciting sports with physical play and fighting.

No matter what you do to promote hockey, the underlying problems remain as to why it's still least popular of the 4 major professional sports in America (to my knowledge):

1) low-scoring
2) rosters are overflowing with names that the average American has no clue how to say or even what nationality that person is
3) plenty of barriers to youth play -- need ice and costly equipment

Personally, I freaking love hockey and have been a fan for most of my life. But I can see why hockey is what it is to most people.

Maybe as HDTV gets more popular, hockey fandom will increase. The puck can be pretty hard to follow with SDTV.

I'm just a very casual fan - my interest doesn't perk up until playoffs approach.

Ovechkin is a great hockey player, but I'd take Crosby or Malkin for my team. I hope he doesn't become the TO of hockey, but I think he's heading down that road .. if he doesn't get himself killed in a car accident first. Take it from Ben Roethlisberger .. doing stupid things with vehicles isn't a good thing for pro athletes.

I don't understand how people bitch about low scoring in hockey. They score roughly the same amount as an average football game. Besides, scoring chances abound and those are the exciting part. They either get a goal, or the goalie makes an amazing save.

Agreed. I love Football and Hockey, but I have seen way more clunker Football games than I have Hockey games.

I never paid attention to hockey at all. A while back my step father invited me to go to a hockey game with the family, we went to a Milwaukee Admirals game... they're professional, but not NHL, mabye the minor leagues? Not sure. Anyway, watching the game in person was a lot of fun and I can see why people like it. But with that said, I'd never watch it on TV if it was on.

hockey to me is just soccer + ice + less pansy flopping. Boring as shit, back and forth for days with nothing happening

That's about as intelligent as saying football is rugby + pads + pansy players.

Maybe you just don't understand what's happening.

TV doesn't doe it justice. You either can't see enough of the rink, or you can barely see the puck. In person, it's much better.

Yea.. It is pretty dumb to say back and forth for days with nothing happening. One can then argue Football is the same crap just slower and that baseball is a bunch of guys standing around.

I can't remember which goal number it was (#34 I think?) but that Ovechkin goal vs the Coyotes is without a doubt my favorite of all time.

Since those games are "slower" you can actually employ some strategy. Its not just guys flying back and forth firing shots at the goal. Just boring as shit to me.

Well, I'd venture to guess that if you don't know much about hockey you don't know what cycling is. Or what a good forecheck looks like. Or understand why icing occurs? There are a bunch of little nuances (like with every sport) that if you understand, you will enjoy the game much better.

Again - maybe you just don't understand what is happening. Just because you don't recognize the strategy, that doesn't mean it isn't there.

So basically the only strategy is subbing players in and hitting them hard....the end result being a bunch of guys flying around after a puck and shooting it in the goal.
